  1. It seems like all of the good work they've done, all the finely tuned armor and unit modeling from WW2 to modern times, all the physics - like all the good stuff - could form the basis of a quantum leap forward in the game, using modern technology/AI/graphics engines/etc  It seems like after all this time, there is enough there to do something pretty spectacular with.  But I'm not a software engineer, so what do I know!

Instead, the inertia of Combat Mission has made it mostly irrelevant for me over the past five years. It's disappointing that so little innovation has come to the series, for me personally anyway. Others see it differently and that's a view I would like to share, but don't. Improvements like engine 4 are too inconsequential to move the needle.

I wonder, in the 4.0 version kind of like a fully developed version of the concept, that pretty much does everything that the designers wanted to do?   Sort of like table top type games?  Where the game rules are pretty much fully baked, then it's all about new content?   Or are there aspects of CM that the community find very lacking, where the product is desperate for new features?

Is game engine 5.0 going to bring any significant innovations?   AI opponent would cool

  3. Hey thanks everyone, I appreciate the responses.   I'm going to download that bundle and get up and running again.   That's actually pretty cool about the PBEM via the game itself.   Funny about not much different in 10yrs except content!   LOL "battlefront" you have to love them

Should I get excited about game engine 5?

I'm actually really happy to hear that not much has changed because they are definitely doing something right, and still chugging along, and not turning the game into something lame to appeal to a wider audience to make $$.

I was telling a marksman/data scientist friend of mine about the game, during a conversation about how FPS games are ridiculous (COD) and I was describing CM to him and he was VERY interested.  I followe dup by senidng him a random CM youtube clip from ten years ago of a Stuart getting side penetrations on a Tiger and he was blown away by the physics modeling of the suspension on the tiger.  Like, that was what he found compelling about the clip.  I was like, yep, you are gonna fit right in, my man 🙂

Hopefully we'll both be in a PBEM by the holidays

  4. Hey everyone, it's been 10yrs since I've played (life, kids, y'know how it goes). But I want to get back into some CM PBEM action. I used to be really into it, doing tourneys and having a half dozen games going at once.

I attempted to get CM back up and running in 2020 and my last purchase was "CMBN Upgrade 3 + 4 Bundle" but the licenses and installing was too confusing and I gave up.

Assuming I get CMBN back up and running, with latest upgrades and patches, my question is:  what's the latest I need to know?  Like what's all this slitherine stuff all about?  Is PBEM easier now? What about tourneys?  How about game engine 4?    What are the big highlights from last 10 years that I should be excited about?   How's the community doing?  I recall back in 2020 I opened my old bookmarks to the leaderboard sites and it was all gone pretty dead.

I really appreciate any responses; I know I can spend a lot of time figuring out answers to my questions, but I'm hoping some of y'all don't mind sharing so I can get back up to speed quickly and into some games!!

    Thanks!!

  5. I decided to upgrade my monitor about the same time CMRT was released. I opted for a 27" wide screen monitor (1920x1080). I HIGHLY recommend this for serious CM players. I no longer have to use the widescreen view option (which always led me to thinking the enemy was further away, which skewed by decision making).

Now, with the wide 1920x1080 view on such a large area, I have much better situational awareness. It just feels so much easier to play the game. I find myself panning and moving the camera much less. More sense of immersion in the game, too. It is like a breath of fresh air.

I could never go back to my old square monitor. Also, the 1920x1080 is just right; the UI is not too small, and everything feels good (my eyes are about 2-3 ft from the screen).

Maybe I'm late to the party on widescreen large displays, but this is game-changer for me and CM! I highly recommend.

    cheers!

  6. I'm in a desperate situation in a game, out of ammo, and contemplating a charge from behind into a hand-to-hand combat situation. I'm wondering: is hand-to-hand combat even modeled? If so, has anyone tried it out? Will my guys stand any chance if the enemy squad still has ammo? My ammo-less squad is hiding (unspotted) about 5 meters behind the enemy squad.

  7. I hear you. Forget my fancy UI ideas then. I'd be OK with just the basics. For example, a R-click on the unit name brings up literally the text and picture from the manual. I'd be happy with that! Just a simplistic HTML or text page with the info for each unit. Just a helpful, low-tech reference is all I need. I just want the information without having to go hunting for it in the manuals, opening the editor, taking notes, etc. Each module I feel like I'm back to square one with it.

I am sure it is going to be a boring and repetitive task for the junior person on the BFC programming team. But maybe it is something that we the community could assemble for them, if they give us the framework somehow? I'd be happy to put in some time on it. I'm sure others would to. Just thinking out loud here...

  8. I admit it, I'm not a grognard. I don't know what PSW means or SPW. I don't know the effect of a 37mm gun vs a 20mm gun on different vehicles. I'm by no means a noob. I joined these boards back when there was a raging debate about whether CM should be 2D or 3D! CM is my favorite game of all time. I've learned a lot about WWII equipment and tactics, and I love H2H QBs (member of WeBob).

However, I realize there is SO much to learn and I simply don't have the time to turn myself into a grog.

I've also realized that I have a much more difficult time with CM QBs during the force purchase process than I did in CMx1. On more than one occasion this has caused me to lose the match. This is because I have no idea what the capabilities of many of the units are. Yes, I know, RTFM, but the manual does not answer all the questions. For example, how many guys are in a certain platoon, so I know how many trucks to buy. It is a cumbersome process to look units up in the manual, and then open the editor and inspect them, make notes, and then go back to my purchasing. Trying to figure units out across the two manuals (FI and GL) is even more frustrating.

So, I've decided that I can live with everything else about CM, as-is, except for this. My sole and heartfelt request is to have the next version of this game include some tool-tips/r-click/pop-up info about the units presented to me during purchasing. Like in the CMx1 days, it was a lifesaver. The CMx1 unit info was extremely important to me learning enough about WW2 units to even play the game (when I first started I didn't know the difference between a Panther and a Tiger!).

So, I figure that BFC has all the unit data, and has 3D models, so why not present some cool popup windows that show the relevant unit data, and a wireframe model of the unit or something cool like that? It would be SO helpful to me, a veteran player, but also absolutely indispensable to new players who don't know jack about WW2 units. I believe this is a barrier to entry for this game for new players unfamiliar with WW2 units.

This is officially my ONLY request to BFC, and I really am hoping and praying that they add this back in, as it would make the game much more enjoyable for me, and help me recruit others to play (I have one family member in mind who thinks it is way too complicated and confusing).

So, BFC, will you please add this back? Please? I'm begging now, I think!
