  1. Just a flag-up for the moderators about the thread prior to this one. Some git-wizard seems to have discovered that there's yet another forum on which he can try and flog his rubbish and show himself to be a complete pain in the arse. No offence meant to anybody who has a genuine pain in the arse, of course
  2. Like Marmite, Vegemite was a gift from God, which allowed the rest of the world to have something that the US did not want, and so would not take from them. God also ate it himself on the 7th day, and decreed that it should appear in the awesome "Down Under" by Men at Work, which some people think should be the antipodean national anthem (after God Bless America). Hence: vegemite rules all things, makes the planet orbit the sun, and ensures that those who are in need of folic acid get it, without paying extortionate pharmaceutical rates. These effects cannot be mimicked by a salt-shaker, though some have tried it, and died as a result. Also, salt doesn't contain folic acid which gives it a distinct disadvantage against the rest of the salty competition, among which I would also include Bovril and Walker's Potato Crisps. Hope that helps
  3. OK Sigrun, I'm fed up. It's pointless. I'm going to bed. I hope you and your friends in the BNP and Combat 18 live happily in your delusions but preferably somewhere behind very, very large perimeter walls.
  4. The SS (Waffen or otherwise) was a criminal organization, politically motivated with a direct allegiance to Hitler, to racial purity, and a willingness to do anything to bring it about. I don't care how elite they were. They were members of a genocidal, inhuman, brutal organization, and no sane person should be making a justification for any of their actions, or promoting any aspect of the SS which disguises the overall truth of the barbaric nature of this foetid creation. Being efficient at supporting an evil cause is hardly worthy of respect.
  5. Hi Sigrun, not quite sure what the hell all this is about. Why are you doing this? Makes no damn sense at all to me. Nobody's going to agree with you (including me). Cut yourself some slack and just knock it off. The more you go on, the worse it looks. How about you just drop it, and come back on a different topic altogether at some point and have a chat rather than a bloodfest. People would be fine with that.
  6. I am definitely NOT a great historian of WW2. However, in Max Hasting's recent book, Armageddon, which tends to the view that the German fighting machine was highly professional (as a fighting machine) and that the Western Allies could not match that level of competence (unit for unit), he points out some other rather unsavoury truths. He doesn't pull his punches. My understanding is that it is a commonly held view that the German fierce defence of the eastern homeland, that allowed many ethnic Germans to flea west, was a phenomenal and almost noble sacrifice. However he points out that for every hour that the Germans were keeping the Russians at bay, the endless, ceaseless extermination of Jews and other "inferior" ethnic groups continued at a frantic pace. The "heroic defence" was at the costs of thousands upon thousands of Jews, who would have been saved if Germany had either given in to the inevitable earlier OR stopped slaughtering Jews and Gypsies in their disgusting butcher factories, even at that last stage, when they knew the war was lost. There is no honour in that "brave defence" when all it did was prolong the genocide. Well, that's my 5 cent's worth. I know I am no expert, but I don't buy any argument about any nobility in the Waffen SS, or the suggestion that everybody else somehow didn't know what was going on. They were either ignoring it or abetting it. This is NOT a criticism of modern Germany (though perhaps of some of its myths). It's a completely separate issue. As for Beevor's seeming obsession with the rape issue, all I know is that there is some debate about its extent and causes. The Russians had every reason to hate the Germans, and as is always the case, it is the women who suffer most. That's all I have to say. I cannot quote chapter and verse. I would, though, recommend Hasting's book. It covers the last year of the war against germany, on both fronts. He's pretty even-handed, and doesn't shy away from atrocities committed by the Western Allies in western europe. Cheers, Martin
  7. I think it might be worth thinking through this thing about strong board moderation and whether the moderators would be better spending time on programming. "Respectable" but rude, abusive, racist, sexist, war-glorifying board; full of religious hatred, do exist. I can only speak for myself, but they drive me nuts! It either brings out the worst in me, or I end up putting half the forum members on my "blocked" list, just so I can read it in peace. More particularly, some trashy, hate-filled forums have usually stopped me buying the games they like to discuss. If the forum is specific to a company, I won't even buy from the company. It's just too much grief, as you like the support forum to be a discussion between sensible friends. "Modern war/flight sim" forums can be the worst, but if strictly moderated, some are still great. Go and look on the Lockon.ru forum and see flyboys being sensible and thoughtful("or else"!). Personally, I have some problems with the forthcoming CMx2 game, because of its setting, and as I recall, I apologised when I reacted to someone's comment. The discussion on that part of this board has also been civilized. I've also found myself apologizing to someone on the CMBB board, for pre-judging him. A pleasant forum is a treat. It encourages use of the game, as well as selling games, and supporting/encouraging the developers. For me the rule is simple - a horrible forum = no purchase. Battlefront is always a nice place to visit. So are many forums (NWS, SSG, Matrix etc)and it definitely shows. I don't know if this is relevant, but that's my fourpenneth (5 cent's worth!). Cheers, Martin BTW I am lousy at pretty well every game I've tried. For that, I have to take full responsibility!
  8. No - you won't. Not if you keep taking the medicine. You know - the medicine that makes you delusional and think you're so sexy.
  9. That's OK then. $19.95 would probably buy you about 15 minutes of therapy. You'd need more, but at least it's a start.
  10. Thanks, That's really helpful. Easier than I thought. I must have been a complete dork not to have realized, all this time. Well, I'd better get on to it. Thanks again
  11. I have noticed on the Scenario Depot, that there are now a lot of scenarios set in Western Europe, similar to the ones in CMBO, but actually using the CMAK game. I have CMAK, and it would be great to be able to use it's enhancements to cover Northern Europe. As there seem to be so many of these CMAK scenarios, set in Normandy, The Ardennes etc, I wonder if someone could let me know whether I just treat them as downloaded user-made CMAK scenarios, or whether I have to do some "magic" first, like loading piles of mods. I'm sure this will have been asked before, but a search on the forum didn't seem to give an easy answer for the terminally stupid! I also wondered if these scenarios carried over the improvemnts of CMAK (over CMBO) into the new (previously CMBO-only) theatre. I'd be grateful for any help. Thanks Martin
  12. Forgot The "Long Range Desert Chindit Group" would be even better and really set the blood running warm in the british veins. I'm not alone - biffa and sandy agree with me! No disrespect meant to brave men.
  13. Hi, I don't really feel able to offer an opinion on the relative merits of different types of deployments, or the use of paid informants, but there is an important aspect to this that has already been hinted at. I want to keep the party politics out of this, as best I can, but it's important to know that in the UK, the current government has seen an unprecedented fall in it's opinion poll ratings. The huge drop in popularity has, in most cases, been attributed to people's dissatisfaction with foreign policy. There is a sense that the public were duped about WMD, that "the war against terror" has made the world less safe, and, more recently, that there attitude to the conflict in Lebanon was wrong in emphasis. Whether any of this is right is not the purpose of the post, so please don't take it as that, as I'm only referring to the political climate, which is currently skeptical. I'm 52, which means that all I know about the LRDG is what I read in Comics, like Commando, as a kid. But, they sparked the imagination and became a picture of heroism. A LOT of people feel they own some knowledge of the LRDG. Whatever it actually achieved isn't the point. It has a unique place in the heart of the middle aged public regardless of what it achieved. Politically, creating anything at all, and calling it the LRDG, full of "chaps" with names like "bonzer", "poppy" and "spikey" racing through sand with the Union Jack flapping in the wind, with no regard for the enemy or their personal safety, is a GREAT move. "C'mon chaps - lets find those damn terror wallas!" It's a "Boy's Own" thing.
