lcm1947
I was hoping to get an idea or two for purchasing some real good speakers for my computer. Now let me explain and hopefully someone or someones might answer this question also. I pretty much know that speakers for music producing devices are rated for the most part by Watts. The higher the Watts the better, but I was informed the other day by a computer guy that that was not true ( Watts ) when buying speakers for a computer. Anybody know if this is correct? Then would anybody care to recommend a particular brand and model. As well as playing CM I also enjoy playing music CD's on my computer and was hoping for some advice on this subject. Would really appreciate any and all help.
Olle Petersson
The rated power (watts) of speakers says only how much they can stand before being broken. It says nothing about the sound quality. This goes for ALL speakers. Regular home speakers are rarely exposed to effects in excess of 20 watts (and more often less than half of that), and computer speakers are generally exposed to 5W or less. The most important property of a speaker is the frequency output curve. Usually there's a bandwidth from about 50Hz to 20kHz, where dampening is less than 3dB. The lower cut-off frequency (bass) should be as low as possible, ideally below 20Hz instead of 50Hz, while the upper end never is a problem. In the pass-band between these frequencies the dampening curve should be flat (or as flat as possible). The dampening curve might be tricky to come by, but the cut-off frequencies are usually available. When I bought speakers I did a search to find some fairly cheap ones with a nice bass envelope. What I stuck with was some cheap subwoofer speaker set from Creative, SBW310 or something. Sounds great, with a bass at 30Hz or so! Cheers Olle

tar
Of course if you live near someplace like Fry's Electronics, you can go in to the store and compare the computer speakers side by side.
lcm1947
Well it so happens we do have a Fry's. I've not been there yet so maybe this will be a good reason to visit the place. I thank you for the tip Tar.
