How do I stop Britons from behaving like Lemmings?

Recommended Posts

OK, this is the problem:

I'm currently designing a sort of "pseudo" Sealion scenario in which German units (mainly Fallschirmjäger but a few armored units too) are attacking a british-held coastline.

I've dug in a lot of Brit infantry in various positions, among others on a hill almost down by the waterfront. It's an excellent position if a little exposed. The units in this particular position are two veteran squads with a "Crack" leader.

They also have a Vickers MG and an AT-gun.

Now, during playtesting the infantry (and once even the MG) leave their foxholes had start charging down the hill towards the attacking germans, with predictable results...

What is this?

"Charge of the light Brigade Complex"?

Any tip on how to keep those guys in their positions would be greatly appreciated.

Guest Lord General MB

Soldier,

If the brits are in fox holes then they must be on defese i'm I right? Now also, the AI is probally trying to get a victory location, in this case mpost likley near the german postion?

...uh... yessir, Lord General Sir... uh... I mean nosir...

In fact the little bleeders are attacking AWAY from a VL flag, the flag being positioned just behind their position. (The idea being to encurage the AI when playing the jerries to try to take the hill).

Thanks for yr input though, any other ideas are welcome, this thing has me stymied.

I have noticed that the AI sometimes has a tendency to abandon good defensive positions to attack at times. The most noticeable example was two Waffen-SS squads who left a wooded reverse slope - beside an AT gun - to charge American infantry, supported by tanks, who were advancing across a wheatfield.

I put it down to some kind of built-in Waffen-SS thing, but it seems that perhaps the TacAI has a weakness with these things..? frown.gif

I've had that problem with lower quality troops. My Ouistreham scenario (over at the depot) suffers from that once in a while. Conscripts and greens tend to get a little over zealous. My greens would leave (and sometimes still do, depending on the tac AI)the safe haven of the Ouistreham casino to cross their own barbed wire. It's crazy.

When I was play testing it, I switched them to regulars to try it out. They rarely left their defensive positions as regulars. Problem was that it made the scenario too difficult (my opinion) to win as the Allies when the German troops were regular.

I hope this suggestion helps you in your quest.

Thanks for sharing guys, it doesn't seem there's much to do then except hope that a future patch or release will have some sort of "Stay!" command.

kb9sog;

I thought the experience level might have had something to do with it as well, but I switched from regulars to Veteran without improvement.

Oh, and Ironcross:

Nope, but I did spot General Melchett and Capt. Darling standing below the hill (on the british side) and looking pleased...

I think this is just a problem that is inherent in the scenario/op design.

I tried to create a scenario on the Arnhem bridge. I wanted it to be a German assault on the Brits defending the bridgehead. But for the first scenario, I wanted the brits to have to wrest control of the bridgehead away from some light troops defending it.

This proved very easy since the troops in the heavy buidlings with carefully prepared fire lanes and such promptly got up and ran onto the bridge itself, where they were slaughtered.

The op/scenario designers are nice, but extrmely unsophisticated tools. It is very hard to make any kind of special circumstances. I would bet a seaborne invasion would be very difficult. The only thing I could think of would be to set the Op type to "Destroy", with the Brits as the defenders.
