how the...????

If you are forced to advance over open ground (there are no concealed routes to the objective), then you should dedicate 2/3rd or more of your force to providing suppressive fire on known or suspected enemy positions. The reason for this is that if your support fire is not enough to suppress the defenders, it hardly matters how large your assault force is. They will be cut down and routed. The small fraction of your force involved in the actual assault should advance by short bounds, or crawl all the way, stopping occassionally to rest.

First, direct your attack over the most favorable terrain for your unit. Use hills to cover your approach. Second, choose a spot with limited effectiveness vs. your units. For instance, don’t charge tanks at AT guns, and don’t charge infantry at MGs. Lastly, lay down some base fire with any support wpns you have available, mortars, MGs, tank fire. Then “Advance” your units for infantry, or “Fast” your tanks and other vehicles.

Mix and match tactics depending on your forces.

Oh, and Area fire is much better for suppressing the enemy than direct fire on specific units. Place your area targets between dug in enemies. And don’t be afraid to use smoke and sprint tactics either.

and don't forget smoke. if you have to move across open terrain, use smoke to help cover your movement(if you have it of course). and be careful with suppressive fire. don't over do it or you'll be out of ammunition before you get to the objective...
