Scenario for playtesting - Kampfgruppe Matenaar

Recommended Posts

I have a small scenario that would, no doubt, benefit from playtesting. Details, and my email address, are below:

Title: Kampfgruppe Matenaar

Type: German attack

Date: Mid-morning, June 7th, 1944

Location: Dives Valley, Normandy

Weather: Clear, dry ground

Terrain: A boggy stream flowing between low hills; a small hamlet surrounded by woods, farmland and orchards

Length: 25 turns

Author: Cromwell; email hotcakes@btinternet.com

Historical Background

Sixth Airborne Division (Major General Richard Gale) began landing in Normandy at 0020 hours on June 6th, 1944. The Division had three primary objectives: to seize bridges over the Caen Canal and River Orne (by a detachment of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, 5th Parachute Brigade); to destroy the coastal defence battery at Merville (9th Parachute Battalion, 3rd Parachute Brigade); and to destroy bridges over the River Dives and its tributaries (3rd Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers, supported by 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and 8th Parachute Battalion, 3rd Parachute Brigade). On successful completion of these tasks, the Division was to secure the area between the Rivers Orne and Dives in order to prevent German reinforcements from interfering with the eastern flank of the allied lodgement.

Facing the paratroopers were elements of 716th Infantry Division (Lieutenant General Wilhelm Richter). A so-called "Fortress Division", this was one of the weaker German formations in Normandy, and contained a considerable contingent of Russian ex-POW's, organised in Ost-Battalions (not to mention a variety of Czech, French and Russian artillery). As might be expected, the ex-POWs were not always the most enthusiastic defenders of the Atlantic wall.

This fictional scenario addresses an attempt by elements of Grenadier Regiment 736 (one of 716 Division's infantry regiments) to regain control of a small bridge captured by a company of Sixth Airborne in the early morning of June 7th. As communications between the various headquarters within the division are tenuous, the German force is a somewhat ad-hoc grouping of available assets.

Designer's comments

This scenario is a sequel to "By a Boggy Stream" and is played on an expanded version of the same map.

The scenario is designed to be played either as German versus the AI or by PBEM.
