The Next Trivia Question from the Earl

Recommended Posts

Patrolling.

Every night the Aussies sent out loads and loads of patrols to dominate the space between them and the beseiging forces.

Each patrol had a sector of the perimeter to cover. When they got to the end of their sector they would move to the location where two small sticks had been left. The patrol would then alter the arrangement of the sticks. The sicks were either crossed (kisses) or parallel (love). So, each patrol would move between the sets of sticks at either end of their sector, crossing and un-crossing them as they came to them.

The patrols in the neighbouring sectors would be doing the same thing to the same sticks. Thus, if a patrol returned to a set of sticks and it hadn't been changed, something must have happened to the neighbouring patrol. After a short time, an alarm would be raised, etc.

In short, a simple, secure method of communicating between patrols, which didn't require the patrols to actually meet.
