The Tiger Triumphs

Recommended Posts

Came across this online book today when googling for Tuker's fate.

It is the official history of the three Indian divisions in Italy, published by HMSO in 1946, for the Indian government.

I only had a quick look through it, but it seems a very well done book, with a lorra lorra pitchers, and maps, and stuff.

If you are at a lose end this weekend, which of course London CM players won't be, this could be for you! ;)

Good stuff Andreas. This site has "The Tiger Triumphs" and "Ball of Fire" which is the official history of the 5th Indian Div in E.Africa, N.Africa, Iraq, and Burma. I've been reading bits of it in conjunction with "Defeat into Victory". Oh, that site also has a selction of photos, in addition to those in the two books.

In a related vein, this site has a selction of 25(!) of the NZ Official Histories. Some are unit histories, including some of the battalions and also the specialists like the gunners and sappers. There are also camppaign histories including all the NZ campaigns in N.Africa, and some other specialist volumes.

Note: there is a typo in there. "4th and 6th Research Mechanical Transport Companies" should read "4th and 6th Reserve Mechanical Transport Companies". These two companies were the tuck companies for the division. Each company had enough trucks to motorise one infantry brigades. In conjunction with "Journey Towards Christmas" and "Supply Company", it gives a very complete view of how logisitics was handled at the divisional level. Actually, given the number of volumes, adn the scope of material covered, the series in it's entirety gives an unparalled view at the workings of an infantry division (later mixed infantry/armoured division) from all angles.

The only thing really missing is the brigade level view, but that is covered by a series of privately published memoirs by the various brigade commanders - "Infantry Brigadier" by Kippenburger, "The Happy Hunted" by Clifton, "Farewell Campo 12" by Hargest, etc, etc.

This site gives you access to the NZ National Libraries collection of WWII photos - well, some of them anyway. The best way I've found to find those of interest is to type in the year you are after, and leave it at that. The resulting search will throw up a lot of photos that aren't relevant, but it should mean that you don't miss any that are. Each oif the photos is classified and cataloged witha fair amount of info. For example, this photo ...
