Ideal force?

Recommended Posts

The recent 'Intriguing' forum topic resulted in 2-3 very interesting posts regarding what units people tend to prefer for use in-game, given a free choice. It made me wonder what people would have chosen in real life?

Just for fun:

It is May 1945 and you have the ability to select any item of equipment from any nation to use in your army, as long as it is modelled in the CM series ;) . If you are to achieve a good compromise between combat efficiency and logistical efficiency (i.e. basic emphasis on capable multi-purpose equipment rather than a wide variety of specialist kit) what would you choose? For the sake of this exercise assume that you have the industrial capacity of a healthy Germany available for production; that should make cost and complexity a potentially critical issue, but one which can be overcome by sufficient compromises with regards to variety.

Will you arm your troops with Browning M2s, SG43s and Brens, or standardise everyone with MG42s? Is it worth complicating supply and organisational issues by maintaining a force of SU-100s, or will your vanilla tank force suffice and take the rap if/ when they encounter heavy armour?

Is this far too complex a question to expect people to enjoy answering, or do you think that with 10-20 items of equipment you can build a force to take on all comers? :D

Daylight or night-time (fit German IR equipment to Comet tanks if you like). All types of terrain. Enemy air power should indeed be expected.

Basically I think it's interesting to consider which equipment would be found most useful in a general combat environment. Is there a limited set of equipment with which you would feel comfortable fighting any conceivable enemy on any conceivable battlefield?

For example, in my case I would consider the DP, Bren, BAR, etc. surplus to requirements, and would simply issue the MG42 as my standard squad LMG and HMG. If possible I would also have the '42 adapted to serve as my vehicle-mounted hull and coaxial MGS.

My infantry would be armed almost exclusively with MP44s, sacrificing ammunition commonality between the squad small arms and LMG for greater versatility. Would you disagree and use Gewehr 43s?

I, personally, don't know as much about army equipment as most people on these forums, which is why I'm interested to see what you all think. I do realise that this is quite a superficial question, the answers to which have little to no practical use. I just thought people might want to share their ideas of what would make for an ideal force at the end of WWII.
