Delay fire order

Is there any way to delay a unit's ability to fire until the target closes to a certain range? Thanks,

That is exactly what covered arcs do.

Yep, not only do you set the angles in a covered arc, but range as well. Very handy indeed.

Yes. When you set the covered arc, the unit will usually only fire at units within the covered arc. There are some exceptions, such as when a unit feels it's own survival is at stake.

If you want a unit to fire on any unit that comes within say, 100m, just click on the "Covered Arc" commmand (or "Cover Armor", as appropriate), and then hold down the CONTROL key (this gives you a full, 180 degree arc) and move the mouse out to 100m from the unit along the line of likely enemy approach. You will see a nice 100m half circle with your unit at the center. The unit will now (usually) hold it's fire until a unit comes within the arc as set.

From one newbie to another, I can say that using HIDE, at least with infantry, with a set covered arc is way cool.

They walk right up and often don't see anything until it's too late. Very satisfying!
