1941 Barbarossa Campaign Mod

OK fellas. I finally got around to a sequel to the previous Campaign mods, and it's now posted at Strategic Command HQ. This mod provides players some additional balance for use with v1.07. As before, there is increased emphasis on the North Atlantic and North Africa campaigns. The British start with some additional units, while the Germans start with a slight advantage in technology and experience. Adjustments to research reflect more realistic starting tech levels and capabilities for all nations by summer 1941. Primary intent of this mod is to provide subtle changes to the default Barbarossa scenario for better solo gaming, as well as improved historical accuracy.

Britain

-------------------

- "8th" Army, "WDF" (Western Desert Force) Tank Group and "Tobruk" Corps start in Egypt at strength 5. Reduced strengths represent recent losses from Greece and Crete campaigns.

- "RCN" (Royal Canadian Navy) Cruiser starts at St. Johns in Canada at strength 10.

- Heavy Bomber tech increased to level 2, Long Range Aircraft and Industrial Technology techs increased to level 1.

- "Nelson" Battleship moved from Great Britain to Suez.

- Britain starts with 4 research points.

- British unit experience generally increased. Some adjustments to unit entrenchments.

- Malta Air Fleet and naval units in Egypt start at strength 8. Reduced strengths represent losses against Italian forces and is consistent with limited reinforcements in the Med.

Soviet Union

-------------------

- Heavy Tanks tech increased to 2, but all units start at strength 10.

- USSR starts with 4 research points, plus 480 MPPs (at-start total now 1200 MPPs).

USA

-------------------

- Industrial Technology increased to level 2.

- USA starts with 3 research points, plus 180 MPPs.

Germany

-------------------

- Advanced Subs and Rocket techs increased to level 3; Jet Aircraft tech increased to level 2; and Anti-Aircraft Radar and Industrial Technology techs increased to level 1. Subs and Air Fleets start at full strength.

- German unit experience generally increased to reflect superior doctrinal and operational experience at this stage of the war. "Rundstedt" HQ, Luftflotte II, and 2nd Pz. (Guderian) Tank Group start with experience level 2.0, other veteran formations start with 1.0 or 1.5, and all others with 0.5. Some adjustments made to unit entrenchments.

- Barbarossa starting positions adjusted to match historical locations.

- One U-boat shifted to middle Atlantic.

- Germany starts with 7 research points.

Italy

-------------------

- Long Range Aircraft tech increased to level 1.

- "Royal Italian" Air Fleet starts in Libya and IV Corps starts in Sicily.

- Italian unit experience generally increased. Some adjustments to unit entrenchments.

- "Gariboldi" HQ repositioned in Libya to permit HQ linking with Tripoli.

- Italy starts with 2 research points.

For the record, I've beaten both the Axis and Allied AI consistently by mid- to late-1944 on Intermediate +1 settings, so although it's not perfect it is relatively balanced. I've had some interesting and challenging games. Enjoy! ;)

Thanks Bill, I look forward to trying it this weekend.

Suggestion: It would be interesting if popular and approved mods could be included in the available scenarios that ship with the product/patches. Perhaps with an intro screen giving some background on the Mod and credit to its designer.

This would 1> make the game more interesting, 2> encourage more people to write mods, and 3> make it easier for players to find these additional scenarios.

Thanks guys. Hubert's FAQ sticky above and his Fury website already provide the link to SCHQ for mods and custom scenarios. This should be fine.

One thing this scenario mod does is provide newer players a pretty good benchmark for where the major countries could be by summer 1941. Research investment versus force pool construction is an important decision between the fall of France and the invasion of Russia, and seeing a realistic Barbarossa setup may help players to understand this better. And for folks just looking for a decent short game to get to the 1942-43 critical point in the war, this is good. ;)
