winkelried
the manual says in the allied strategy section, that the soviets should defend behind river hexes. I found no reference to the defense value of river hexes somewhere else in the manual. Anybody a better reader or is this an undocumented feature? Silvercloud
I don't know about the manual, but I know that: -Attacking from a river hex is penalised.... hope this helps ---------------- Silvercloud
GravesRegistration
 Great i've been sitting on rivers thinking that means you hold the bridgehead and have a defensive bonus for being on them.. WTF what's the deal?
John DiFool
[Just turned on the hex grid and took a look at the map...] I had thought (or hoped) that the rivers would have flowed BETWEEN the hexes (like in 3R). But it appears that they flow THROUGH the hexes. The problem is if you have the grid turned off, it is often very hard to determine which hexes the rivers flow through, because the damned things tend to meander quite aimlessly, sometimes going along the edge, other times through the middle. Redoing the map so that the rivers go between the hexes would eliminate a lot of this ambiguity, and would make it clear where the defender should station himself for maximum defensive posture. It would also make the defensive bonus work BOTH ways, in that both sides of the front would get the bonus... John DiFool

Norse
Also units defending "on" a river, can not entrench. If you stand behind the river then you can entrench to level 2, or more (4 for cities and hills, 6 for capitals).

Always clear to me, but then I'm an old man and remember hexes with great nostalgia and keep them turned on... Europe just doesn't look right without them . One thing I notice, and this may be why the design decision was made to have river hexes rather than hexsides is that the map has sections with rivers running thorough two hexrows (such as in front of the Maginot line) making those double rows a pain in the ass to attack into and out of.
