JonS Posted July 29, 2001 Share Posted July 29, 2001 Could someone tell me why, after landing in the south of France, the US/French forces there didn't do a right-hand-down and hook across the top of Italy? Seems to me it would of been a fairly quick way to wrap up the Italian Campaign. How did they deal with the border area between France and Italy? Everything I've read about it - admittedly not that much - just doesn't mention it. After the invasion, everyone headed off north up the Rhone(?) River, end of story. Now, my guesses, and that's all they are, are along the following lines: 1) not the focus. Op Dragoon was to assist Overlord, not the Med 2) not enough forces. Northern Italy could be easily screened with few forces, but would take quite a few divs to liberate. An answer to satisfy my curiosity would be appreciated. Kingfish Posted July 29, 2001 Share Posted July 29, 2001 Even if the allies headed eastward they wouldn't have bagged army group 'C'. They might have forced it's withdrawal, but all that would accomplish would be to shift the front to the Italian / Austrian Alps, terrain ideal for defense. Also, most of the forces of Dragoon were free French, and I'm sure that played a part in which direction the 6th army group headed. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It would have taken not much to hold the Alps passes between France & Italy from any Allied advance from Southern France into Northern Italy.
