Wouldn't it be nice...

if there was an air war game that used CM's terrain. I'm not talking soomething linked to CM, but part of the same universe. After they rewrite the engine (and probably the terrain scale), they might consider contracting such a game. Someone could pay them for the rights to use the terain as the "world" for a new combat flight simulator. The turn-based nature of CM would not allow for these games to be linked, but shooting-up CM vehicles, structures, and flak guns would be fun.

Just like in the real world, not too many flight simmers like mudhogging. Ground attack is one of the least pleasant things a flier can do, because those nasty little ants have a even nastier way of plucking you from the sky.

(That's not to say that a game like A-10 won't do well)

But other things aside, terrain is, as far as I'm aware, not that great an issue for flight sims; they typically take place at least 5kft above the ground, at which time terrain becomes almost irrelevant.

It's true enough that most flight-simmers prefer dogfights to ground attacks, but OTOH one of the most popular flight sims of the past few years, MiG Alley, focused heavily on ground missions, and IL2, probably the most heavily anticipated upcoming flight sim, will likewise focus heavily on tank busting and similar fun.

The main problem with flight sims at low level is that unlike in the real world you have no death perception in a computer game this makes it much harder to not run into the ground. In addition you have no motion sensing as you aren't in the plane so it is harder to know precisl what the plane is doing. This is a problem at low level.
