More dope on the VT fuze

Recommended Posts

Ken Young posted this in the soc.history.war. world-war-ii newsgroup:

quote:
VT fuses were used to replace time fuses in artillery to give air blasts. There were limitations on using them with land artillery caused...by the fact they would not fit a standard fuse pocket. While diameter was the same as existing fuses the fuse body was eight inches longer. This meant a change to the shell filling was needed. Britain adopted the universal filling for the 25pdr and bigger. This had a removable plug of explosive underneath the fuse pocket. This plug would be removed if the VT fuse was used.

As I read this then, the shells using this fuze would have given up some (a significant amount actually) of their blast radius in order to get an airburst.
