(You probably thought of this, but just in case). And , -definitely- PBEM. I started out as a total novice and had decided not to try PBEM until I played enough to "know what I was doing" - can't recommend that LITTLE enough. It makes all the difference in the world to play a human (even though I'll probably get beat - badly! - I found out later my opponent was a -serious- student of the period) So, in short, go for it.
