I just stumbled across a book at the local Border's store - don't know if anyone else has mentioned it yet:

BREAKOUT AT NORMANDY

(The 2nd Armored Division in the Land of the Dead)

by Mark Bando

Published by MBI Publishing Company

ISBN 0-7603-0654-0

Price $19.95

The format is 8.5x11 paperback with 160 pages. Also has lots of good photos.

Everything about this book screams "I can do this in CM!" It is concerned primarlily with the week of 24-30 July 1944.

It centers around Combat Command B (CCB) of 2AD that was 12 miles behind enemy lines after completing an end run around the German positions southwest of St. Lo. As the other Allied forces pushed the Germans back, CCB was trying to cut them off while trying not to be overrun by them at the same time. And which German forces were they... 2nd SS Panzer Div (Das Reich), 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Div (Gotz von Berlichingen) and elements of 6th Fallshirmjaeger Rgt.

The book covers that week long running battle, from both sides, culminating in a large nighttime battle that came to be called Death Night. And best of all, it does this in CM detail! A Panther here, two Stugs there , 4 half-tracks in that column........ It also has tallies on numbers and types of vehicles lost in the varying engagements throughout the week.

Just as a small extract is the following concerning a panther tank which has just destroyed a couple Shermans and some half-tracks -

"...continued southwest then saw a U.S. M5 tank coming from the right on a perpendicular road about 100 meters in front of the leading SS vehicle. The U.S. driver was going so fast that his tank went nose-in to the ditch of the D38 (road). While the driver was struggling to back the tank out of the ditch, the electrical aiming system on Fritz's Panther suddenly didn't work, which mysteriously saved the floundering tank from sure destruction. The U.S. tank backed out of the ditch and headed west at full speed."

NOW WHO ARE YOU UNBELIEVERS THAT SAID JEB STUART'S GHOST WAS ONLY IN A COMIC BOOK?!!!
