Guest R Cunningham
While blissfully ingnorant of the Britsh rank system, I think there are several errors in your matches of German to US ranks. This is a generally dubious proposition since the Germans have more enlisted ranks that have no direct equivalent in the US Army. Gefreiter is generally considered to be the equivalent of the US Army Corporal. Unteroffizier is the first real NCO rank and is thus equivalent to Sergeant (E-5) Unterfeldwebel would then match with Staff Sergeant (E-6) Feldwebel is equivalent to Sergeant First Class (E-7)(the rank normally associated with the duty position of Platoon Sergeant) There is the oberfeldwebel that would be called Master Sergeant (E-8)in the US. But Mastersergeant is also used for the next rank. The German Hauptfeldwebel matches the US First Sergeant but this rank is still E-8 and the distinction is only made by duty position. Each US Company has a Master Sergeant as the senior NCO in the company and he is called the First Sergeant. The Stabsfeldwebel and Oberstabsfeldwebel are the equivalent of the US Sergeant Major (E-9). The US again has a distinction between two kinds of Sergeant Major based on duty position. A Sergeant Major on staff is called a Sergeant Major while an NCO of the sme rank who is serving as the Senior NCO in a battalion or larger unit is designated Command Sergeant Major. guachi
Here is my stab at things. God, I hope the formatting works. The info came from the great Handbook on German Military Forces and German Army Uniforms and Insignia 1933-1945 by Brian L. Davis OK, the formatting worked, but it didn't read well. Here is another try. I know some of these ranks don't actually exist, but the books I got these from added the closest equivalent for comparisons sake.
