Blowing up Bridges

Recommended Posts

What are the most effective ways to get this done quickly? Can engineers do it?

Nope; engineers cannot blow bridges in game. Only way to do it in game is to hit the bridge with HE -- either direct fire or off map artillery (preferably big caliber stuff, esp. if it's a sturdy stone or steel bridge).

IRL, priming a bridge for demolition takes quite a bit of time and expertise. And even then, it doesn't always work as planned (e.g., Remagen). While it might be an interesting addition to the game at some point, I can see why this wasn't at the top of BFC's priority list, and IMHO it's generally better to design CM scenarios so that they represent the period either just before or just after the bridge demolition takes place. For example:

"Keep the enemy away from the approaches to this bridge for the next 45 minutes so that the engineers can prepare it for definition". Defender wins if he keeps the attacker off of the objectives long enough, at which point it is assumed the bridge is ready to blow.

"The enemy has just dropped the bridge over the river. There is a ford downriver, but it is not useable by vehicles. Push your infantry Company across the ford, and establish a perimeter on the far bank around the bridge abutments so that the engineers can erect a Bailey bridge and we can get vehicles across the river." Attacker wins scenario if he can secure objectives on the opposite bank, representing establishment of a bridgehead large enough for the engineers to safely build a temporary span.
