The correct question is 'which CM is better in WW2 and Modern era" since they play quite differently.

Can't say much about the WW2 since I own only CMBN (although Big Bundle is richest of all content-wise atm) - but for modern era it's CMBS hands down. CMSF and CM Afghanistan have their quirks and character and the former is just pure content porn - but gameplay- and difficulty-wise Black Sea is where it's at.

So Black Sea for modern era, and what's everybody thinking the best is for WW2 era?

Of course you will! You are a true CM Junkie like the rest of us.

One of the advantages of having so many flavors of CM is that you can read a book, say on the Italian theater, or watch a documentary on Normandy, than go and experience it in one of the games for yourself. I look at CM games (and other good historical titles) not just as games, but as tools to explore and relive the history, a way to immerse yourself in another time and place and interact with the past. No other medium in the the history of mankind has allowed that like PC gaming, not even reenacting. Depending on the game, you can delve into the politics, the economy, social constructs, and the warfare of the period. As far as WWII goes the scope of CM scratches that itch for me just fine.

Well put Mord. Great stuff. I think I love that when I was a little kid I was obsessed with creating large scale battles and immersing myself with my plastic army men. Now CM gives me the ability to do that as an adult, and still be as involved and excited as I was all those years ago. I'm still reading the Band of Brothers book so I'll have to get into a market garden mission when I get to that part of the book soon!

If the best CM game is the one you spend the most time playing, then CMFI is in my experience the best. It has the longest time frame, July 43 to May 44, most varied terrain and weather, steep mountains to flat farm fields, baking heat to winter blizzards, hard rocky ground to deep mud. And the forces? In my opinion, the widest selection of any of the titles. Italians vs New Zealanders is not a battle happening in any other title. When the Rome to Victory module is released, all the features I just listed will be expanded upon further cementing CMFI as the broadest in scope.

And WEGO every battle, every time. After watching a squad leader run from cover to stand over his cowering squad mate, ignore incoming fire, burn off a few dozen rounds in the direction of the enemy and then escort his man to safety, I was hooked. You can't watch that a dozen times in a row in real time.

andddd now I'll have to buy CMFI as well.

  4. Thanks man! I started out on Sudden Strike in 2000, moved to Company of Heroes, Graviteam Tactics, as many RTS games as I could play in between. Combat Mission definitely has grown on me as my favorite series from what I've played so far. Pretty much unmatched if you have the patience for it, which a lot of people sometimes don't have.

That's impossible to answer for me. Each one is my favorite depending on my mood. I can say the one I am looking forward to the most, at this point, is CMSF2. I can't wait to experience it in its 4.0 glory.

I didn't know there was going to be a CMSF2, that sounds awesome. Any idea on a release?

  6. Hey guys,

I currently own Combat Mission Normandy, Final Blitzkrieg, and Shock Force. I'm just wondering what your favorite game is? I haven't played Blitzkrieg yet, just installed it yesterday. But I loved Normandy and Shock Force.

Did Fortress Italy release after Battle for Normandy? And if you were to pick only one CM game to play for the rest of your life, which one would it be?

There isn't such an option in this game. I think maybe you are thinking of Graviteam Tactics.

But what you can do is to do a target order and then move the target line around to get an idea about where your unit can fire.

I think you're right because I was playing Graviteam not too long ago. I could have sworn there was a way to see their target area in CM but I must be mistaken. I appreciate the reply!

  9. Hey guys,

I just reinstalled Combat Mission: Normandy after I hadn't played in a long time. Just wondering what key I press to see my unit's field of vision. I've looked through the manual and couldn't find it. I thought there was a way to see everything your unit can see, where everything visible is in green and everything that isn't is in red. If anybody knows and can help me out I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks!

  10. roflcakes,

Wart 'n' all touched on a topic that all newbies should know about. Mods will make this game a lot better. I recommend Juju's interface mod and any set of the sounds mods. Stock sounds are a little flat and nondescript for me. Both of these will help with immersion. There are also tons of graphics mods out there too that will help.

Do I need to go somewhere to download the mods for the game?

  11. A couple of things you might think about:

First of all, you might want to create/split off several scouting teams. Try to pick out good locations from which they can observe the parts of the map where you suspect enemy units might be hiding, but without being themselves spotted. Once that is done, let them have a turn or two to settle in. They might hear sounds or glimpse movement that would give you at least tentative contacts that you can develop further through area fire. If however nothing turns up in a reasonable amount of time, you can try dangling a bit of bait. Another scouting unit or a cheap vehicle might be exposed quickly near the end of a turn to see if it draws fire. If so, there is a good chance that the firing unit(s) will yield up positive contact markers and you can proceed from there. But for this to be a winning tactic, you need to have overwatch with units that have enough firepower to at least pin the enemy units and begin to neutralize them. Put those elements together and you can successfully advance into enemy territory while eliminating enemy units as you go.

But learning all the nuances of that method is a skill that you acquire through a certain amount of trial and error over time. Don't expect that just because you are learning to play the piano that you will be able to perform Brahms' 2nd. Concerto right off the bat.

    :D

    Michael

Thanks for the tips man! Slowly but surely I'll get better

  12. Two little tips you might try. 1. Study the map carefully during the set-up phase. Take as long as you like over it. And make sure to study it from the defender's perspective too, before planning your own route/s of attack. 2. Split off some scout teams and give them a pause every so often, it will easier for them to pick up both sound and visual contacts whilst stationary.

    Thanks for the tips,

Is there somewhere I can see a legend for the different units? I know what the majority of the symbols over each unit mean, but would love to see something that explains each unit's specialty ect.

Also, when you have a commanding unit equipped with binoculars, I click the binoculars and it doesn't do anything. Do these units automatically use them?

  13. Yeah, the only thing I really have alot of trouble with is discovering enemy positions while maneuvering. Seems like I get shot at without any idea of the location of the enemy forces most of the time and suffer casualties before I'm able to engage. So I'm trying to do more with properly using the terrain and locating the enemy before being engaged from a distance. Reminds me of being a kid and playing with toy military figurines, only now it resembles a game of chess. Great game so far I can already foresee putting a ton of hours in.

  14. There is no $90.00 dollar version. There is a $105.00 version which comes with Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy, Commonwealth expansion, Market Garden expansion, and 2 Engine upgrades. For 105 bucks thats not too bad.

I used to play Company of Heroes, Men of War, Sudden Strike, and Blitzkrieg, but after I found combat Mission I havent played any of those games. You should know though Combat Mission is not best played Real Time I tried to play real time when I first got into CM it was too hard.. To get the best experiance you really should play WeGo (turn based) which is great because you can rewind the action so you dont miss anything. Spending $105.00 on a game sound like a lot but when you think about it you are actually saving like 40 bucks buying the CMBN big bundle and its really like getting three games. If its too much for you I would look into getting the CMFI bundle

So with the WeGo is that something you can change from real time to turn based in game? Like you can open a menu and change over from real time to turn based?

Also, is the multiplayer a player vs player style with predetermined unit sets?

    Thanks for the replies!

  15. Hello,

I purchased Combat Mission: Shock Force and am looking to buy Battle for Normandy but have a few questions.

I haven't seen anywhere to purchase the game besides on the website itself, where it is listed at no less than $90.00. Can anyone explain to me what the game entails for that amount of money? Is it just the basic version of the game or are there added items with that package?

Also, I am used to playing games like Company of Heroes and Sudden Strike, but am looking for a new true RTS. What are your thoughts on this game and its features?

    Thanks in advance
