  1. I just wanted to publicly thank JoMc67 for taking the initiative to PM and offer to play PBEM with me. I am brand new to the Combat Mission series and had been stumbling my way through battles against the AI. After posting some questions to the forum, Joe contacted me to ask if I would like to play a PBEM game where he could help me learn the ropes. As a new player I found the prospect of playing against a human opponent to be intimitading. I play lots of other games online, but given the complexity of this one, and even the unfamiliarity of PBEM, it's possible that I never would have taken the leap without someone from the community reaching out to offer a game. The game was great fun (I was trounced) and I learned a lot. We are now beginning our second engagement. I'm already having more fun than playing against the AI, and can see that my longevity with this product has increased by an infinite amount. I think it's important to recognize people who do this, and from reading these forums I can see there are many people who are working hard to create a welcoming community. It's things like this that make a gaming experience memorable and special. This is especially important for a fringe hobby/game like this one, where the community is never going to be as big as a more accessible, mainstream game. By being patient and friendly with noobs like me, it ensures the community continues to grow and flourish, and that awesome games like this continue to be made. So thanks again JoMc67, and everyone in this community who reaches out to new players. - James
  2. Thank you for the quick replies and the links! I will read them all this evening.
  3. Hello all, I am new to Combat Mission and have been consuming as much information as I can. I've watched all the armchair general videos, some other tutorial vids, and plenty of AARs. It's amazing the resources available, and I want to thank everyone who has been producing content because it's really helped me wrap my head around the game. These resources have provided me with lots of tips on how to use the ui/game mechanics, and also how to use my units effectively. I've played lots of rts game/strategy games, but my knowledge of proper combined arms tactics etc has always been limited to some light reading and movies, so this has been a big learning experience. What I'd like to do with this thread is create a place where I (and other new players) can ask random small questions without flooding the board with new topics. Here is my first round! Thanks for any help in advance! 1. If a unit is given a firing arc, and is fired on, will they shoot back or are they still restricted to their arc? 2. I'm still trying to figure out the most effective way to use snipers. Right now I find myself using them as spotters/scouts more than anything. This probably isn't a bad way to use them, but I'm not really using them to actually kill any enemy units because I worry about them being spotted. Is this a concern? Or can their range keep them hidden while shooting? 3. Armor spotting: If I'm using an armored unit, I'm currently using my infantry to sweep ahead of them (scout teams etc) to spot ambushes and units. If the infantry spots these units but my tanks can't see the units what are my options? I know I can open the hatch to improve their spotting. Can I just targeted fire at the area that my infantry spotted the enemy? or is there a better way to do this? Thanks for the help, I'm sure I will remember more questions I've thought of and post them later.
  4. Hello battlefront community, i bought normandy a long time ago but was unable to really get into it because of a bad concussion. After I recovered life got in the way but now I finally have time to play games again and can look at a screen without barfing (hurray) anyways, I picked up Black Sea since I wouldn't mind a modern setting so now I have both normandy and Black Sea. I have two questions: 1. What is the best way to go about recon? Right now I am using scout teams with a tiny fire arc so they don't shoot. This has had some success but I feel like most of the time I manage to spot something they spot me right back. Anything I can do to improve my odds? 2. This is probably more subjective but which game should I focus on? I can bounce back between each of course, but would like to start by sinking my teeth into one. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!
