  1. Originally I had wanted, after the hedgerow blast, to get two full squads across a long field as quickly as possible. The first squad occupied the downstairs of the house, which had a back door right out to the hedgerow. I tried various "paused" locations for the second squad, upstairs, outside the front door, etc. What finally worked was to start with the first squad in the small space between the back door and the hedgerow, i.e., outside, and keep the second squad paused on the first floor until the first squad was already out the hedgerow.

Agreed, there's a way to skin the cat, but sometimes it takes some experimentation to figure out how.

  2. I ran into a situation that confuses me..

Campaign: Devil's Descent, Scenario: The Bells Are Calling

Situation: Two Squads Occupy A Two Story House bordered by a solid hedgerow in the direction I want them to proceed.

I send one squad out the back door of the building to the hedgerow and have them blast a hole in it. They execute their instructions perfectly.

Next turn I direct the other squad out the same back door to the entry side of the blasted hole, then to the far side some distance away. While most of the squad follows the prescribed path, a couple of squad members exit the building using the front door and proceed to follow a completely different hedgerow without openings, one that takes them a completely different direction far away from the path I have ordered. I presume they "believe" this is their most efficient path to their final destination, but it's as if they don't "realize" there is a much more efficient and safe path out the back door and through the blown hedgerow.

Does anyone have any insight into this strange behavior?

  3. Returning to CMBN after a number of years' hiatus. That hiatus started shortly after I purchased all available modules and packs for CMBN and upgraded to engine 4. Upon returning to the game and preparing to start the Road to Montebourg campaign I read online that some battles had been broken by the increased effectiveness of machine guns in later CMBN versions. By broken I mean the player stands very little chance of winning because infantry advance tactics that had previously been possible were no longer possible.

So before I spend a bunch of time and effort starting campaigns and scenarios, I want to make sure I am not embarking on a hopeless endeavor.

I need to avoid highly difficult missions until I can get my sea legs back. Ah, who am I kidding, even with my sea legs I would have trouble with highly difficult missions!

Anyway, I play only vs. AI and prefer to play as Allies.

What campaigns and scenarios do you suggest? Thanks in advance for any comments.

  4. After a long hiatus for life and technical reasons, I am jumping back into playing CMBN. I have all the upgrades and packs. But I have lost all my installed mods, and there may also be newer mods than the ones I had.

I am looking for a list of the best must-have mods, things like UI, floating icons, unit pics, terrain and buildings, vehicles, sounds, etc. I am aware of Green as Jade's site.

I don't need every minor mod to start with. Any help is appreciated.

    Edited to add:

It looks like Aris' Terrain Texture Compilation is a good starting point, but I'm open to other suggestions.

Examples could be better infantry use of terrain (each man finding "hull down" positions on the edges of slopes, trenches, ditches, railroad embankments etc., possibly controlled by the player using the "face towards" tool), more or different types of movement orders, new types of fire orders (fire only the flame thrower without the main gun, throw grenades without firing rifles, etc). Could also be about more frequent spotting cycles (with same overall chances of spotting of course). Also having the ability for squads to spread out more, perhaps down to the level of controlling each individual soldier or buddy-team could be an option.

If I had understood what "finer grain" meant, I would have voted for this. As it was I voted for "Follow Me" command. Tried to revise my vote but couldn't.

Enjoy your viewing. I do sometimes tease him about toggling the trees and not playing on Iron. But that is just me being a glutton for punishment.

I must say, W'n'A, that judging from your picture you need to update your style a bit. :)

Uh... but now, uh, now that I look at my own picture, uh, people like me that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

I'm not a geography expert DaddyO but I don't think you and I count as being "antiipodean". But I enjoyed your comment anyway.

Yes I'm a massive fan of Ithikial's work as well. In fact his videos are what got me back into war gaming. And we have enjoyed quite a bit of banter over the last couple of years.

Hah! I missed your "Limeyland" location.

I've never heard of anyone from our antipodean colony as having "a winsome, fun personality" before, I almost spat out my morning coffee. When you watch his stuff just be careful not to mention The Ashes.

Exits stage right even quicker than normal in case I cop a fist to my overly large Pommy mouth ----------------->

Ah, my friend, I'd hate to offend anitpodean sensibilities, especially if it meant the loss of some precious coffee droplets. :) However, Ithikial be a fair dinkum of a bloke.

When I watch American baseball, I want Vin Scully in the broadcast booth. When I watch CM AAR's, I Ithikial calling the shots. Either one just makes you want to pull up a chair.

  9. For me the best combination of Combat Mission entertainment and teaching award goes to our friend Ithikial, though there are of course a number of others who deserve honorable mention. He combines a winsome, fun personality with a fairly detailed look-listen at his plans and moves. His videos were instrumental in me learning and enjoying Combat Mission.

I only wish he could quite his real life and do it full time, though I know that's impossible.

You know how some sports broadcasters do a fine job of describing games, but only a few make you feel like their one of your buddies watching it with you? That's Ithikial. Well done, sir.

  10. Posts like the one that started this thread befuddle me. Presumably, based on his opinions, the OP has no interest in being a part of the Battlefront community. His only contribution to that community is an ignorant trashing of the company hosting the forum. It comes across more as someone crying out for attention rather than any seriously made point. Then why post? He must realize nobody here cares about drive-by comments. Perhaps he is the "stupid" one.

  11. You guys are much more hard core than I, but as a life-long reader of WW2 history I found this book particulary helpful in trying to understand what life and opinion in Germany was like during the war years.

The German War: A Nation Under Arms, 1939-1945, Citizens And Soldiers , by Nicholas Stargardt. The book draws heavily on memoirs and letters written contemporaneous with the events, as well as later interviews with participants and their relatives.
