  1. I had a Panzer drive straight through a large single tree (not in a forest) till the tree was sticking up through the center of the turret. then the tank advanced till the tree was in the engine compartment and finally reversed so that the tree passed all the way down the center of the vehicle.

    My screen cap didn't take.

  2. Understood in terms of gameplay, but really this seems more appropriate for a CMSF type theatre, unlike Nomandy where units suffered alot of casualties in order to achieve objectives.

It would be more realistic if your losses were replaced by low quality troops rather than not getting enough troops to make it through. Although I'm only into about the sixth mission so my comments maybe premature.

I didn't use the road much at all in the first phase - I went through the hedgerows by using my combat engineers and came up on the first farm house complex through the fields. A squad of infantry moved along the road short of the first junction and took the first line of defenders in the flank.

After that, moving onto the three story building on the right that dominates the church and most of the town was easy. I put my artillery observer on the third level and bombarded the objective with everything I had.

When my infantry moved into the town they engaged the AT gun and killed the crew. I lost 1 tank and was on the verge of a total victory when the game crashed! I was too pissed off to play the same battle again and moved to the Pz Lehr campaign instead.

  3. I have been playing Iron from day one and the main difference I see is that the enemy icons are generic - it's harder to establish what kind of enemy unit you are facing. C2 works fine for me. You just have to keep your sub-units in contact and use WW2 formations and battle drills.

  4. And stop my soldiers shooting surrendering enemy while you're at it. I find it rather disturbing...

Well, combat is disturbing and games that reinforce this message actually help to discourage us from war fighting, IMO. Let's keep it virtual!

Historically, surrendering in the heat of battle was very dicey and your chances of being shot out of hand were very high, on both sides. Representing this in the game isn't gratuitous, it's a sobering reminder of reality.

EDIT - I just saw above that it's crossfire...

  5. One of the most interesting things to come out of CM:BN testing is that the older German 75mm AT Guns vs. the M4A3 Shermans is not what people would expect. The Sherman stands up pretty well to them under many combat situations. The stats back that up. Other Shermans... not so well :D Also, Panthers tend to make a mess out of a Sherman at any range. Well, as long as the Shermans don't get the drop on the Panther at fairly close range.

I can still remember CMBO days where there were HOWLS of pain from gamers saying CM was totally broken because they lost a King Tiger. "What happened?". "A SHERMAN knocked it out!". Come to find out it was flank shot at 50m or something like that :D

Perception and reality are often very, very far apart.

    Steve

I absolutely agree. And Hollywood hasn't helped!

  6. I am on my 8th scenario and I am finding the armour model very convincing, apart from the speed of target acquisition - Sherman drives up to a hedgerow and starts blazing away at enemy infantry in the next hedge within 2-3 seconds.

I have had numerous instances of my Shermans taking PAK hits and pulling back without being knocked out. I played the Command Post scenario in the Demo (name?) and took out both Panthers from maximum map range with my platoon of Shermans by using hull down on the low rise at their map entry point. I got a Total Victory result on the first try, playing as Iron, and only lost two tanks.

I'm not boasting, I'm just saying that it's quite possible to do this, so the game doesn't seem to be particularly flawed in this area IMHO.

The one thing I would like to see changed is the tendency of MG crews to engage armour. If I was manning the gun I can assure you the crew would be hiding!

  7. I found BFC response to the OP's so called 'deductive reasoning' appropriate. Combative? And? Certainly no flame, rudeness or downright ad hominem attack was seen.

Just because you find, imaginative or real, certain x feature/Method frustrating makes certainly not the 'logical' observation/deduction they should have done away with the theatre altogether. Thank God such reasoning is not prevalent among BFC testers/makers, as no game would have seen the light of day. Ever.

I was surprised by the tone of the BF Admin response, but I do agree with the content. I have played through 8 scenarios so far (3 as Axis) and I have had no real path finding or control issues.

There are occasions where you need to get down to ground level to recon the gaps in the hedgerows, but most of those gaps probably weren't on the maps issued to the troops, so that's exactly what their officers had to do as well, I expect.

A 'Follow me' command would be extremely useful, however.

  8. CMBN comes closer than any other game I have seen to providing a convincing and satisfying representation of WW2 combat (or any other era, for that matter).

I have a few minor issues I'd like to see changed, such as some of the CMx1 and CMSF sounds, but I just watched the enemy AI crawl its infantry through trees and grass onto my flank, take fire and then run back toward cover and it was the most immersive 30 seconds of game time I have had in a long time.

    Great job Battlefront!

  9. I have been playing this demo and also "the other new East Front demo" that shall remain nameless. My sense is that the Axis armour in CMBN is much deadlier than the armour modeled in the other game, which also features wooded terrain.

The question is, which game has it closest to reality and can we take a lesson from it? (I like both games, by the way).

  10. If I saw a TC standing in a hatch I would take a shot at him, especially if I thought I had a descent chance to hit him. If he was manning a 50 and could return fire quickly should I miss .... Well then I might have to think harder about making that shot ;) ...

In either case I would shoot and scoot pretty quickly ....

In the absence of a 'scoot' feature, maybe the 'shoot' action makes less sense?

  11. You'll need to wait for another module for that. Playing Tigers against Shermans in the game you cannot underestimate the role sheer luck played for Wittman... while his luck lasted. After all, it was a Sherman that eventually killed him.

IIRC, he was killed by a Sherman (Canadian?) and one or two of the accompanying Tigers were destroyed by Typhoons.

There were British anti-tank guns engaged as well. It was a real charge of the light brigade affair, I believe.

  12. It's a shame that you cannot swap or combine the tank crews. I had a couple of instances in CMSF where I had a full crew who bailed out from a destroyed tank and a partial crew in an intact tank (usually the commander was dead), and I really wanted to swap them. If Battlefront could allow us to swap crews it would be appreciated! I have read plenty of anecdotes where commanders swapped tanks so they could still lead and on the radio net.

It was common practice for the senior tank commander to take over an adjacent vehicle if his own tank was put out of action for any reason. Maybe it still is?

  13. With respect, I put it to you that if a gun crew runs away or routs from their piece, they're not stopping to do anything fancy to their gun.

A very strange design decision that is obviously going to be objected to by a large majority of players.

Why not just reverse it now, or at least list it for the first patch?

  14. Hi. I installed CMSF NATO and now I get strange unit names and equipment types showing up all over the place - e.g. 'Panther' and 'Sherman'. Also ATG weapons are being listed as 'Infantry Gun'.

Has this been reported anywhere? The game plays OK, but it does make it confusing, especially when trying to Acquire equipment inside an AFV!

The only Mods I have enable are the German and Syrian Icon Mods, but they only contain graphics files, no text or other file types.

  15. I'm pretty sure this is not the case. Unit icons are greyed out if they cannot be controlled, but that's because they are panicked (or something similar) and not because they are out of C2. Unless you can show me the page in manual :).

Ah right - panic. I knew there was some circumstance where player control was lost. I haven't played much CMSF as the theater selected is of no interest to me personally.

Out of C2 primarily affects the ability of leaders to influence and units to spot targets for higher HQ, if I read the manual correctly?
