  1. In, say, half till one year all you 'noobs' will have 'seen the light'. CMx1 is long gone. Please don't 'wave attack' this good old forum with discussions setteled years ago. (ja- I know, let's just wait a little (3-4 months) and then we will see if you still have complains about 'noob-stuff'.

  2. Long post lost before transmitted.

Short: I want to see which unit can see the other (or not) as fast as possible (drone-view -> click unit, deselect, click unit). And I want a cheállenge. That is the first reason I play CM. It would feel 'gamey' to me, to be able to instantly spot friendly units.

    But each as he likes.

  3. I have played CM since Riesberg-Beta over most all the time since then (mostly pbem [WEGO!] and that means since CMSF every day 1/2 till 1 hour in the morning and again in the evening). ALL the time always in most difficult level avaiable. Here is my point of view for what ever it may be worth:

If you have Respekt about CMBN (means in the end to try to 'beat it like a man'), -> than charge it right on and start with "Iron". It will be harder in the start but turn to less effort in the long run.

    1. be care-full about your mouse-pointer -> if you push it to the edge of the screen you will drift off (that's the only real minus point I dont't like over all the years).

    2. most use-full 'key': Mouse-wheel. With this you change your viewing mode (fluent).

    3. basic viewing mode: zoomed out (drone-view) with no unit selected. This is your 'FHQ-table' (you see a summary of your 'intelligence'). You have 'your map and your units' as symbols. (I suggest to pick up a 'military symbols'-mod, if you 'get used' to them they are better to 'disginwishblabla' then the standard one. But it's a 'mood-point' in the end, don't let the 'grogs to haunt you', just try out what is best for you). Plan your strategies in this mode !.

    4. For all details:

    - Follow the 'command-chain'. -> means: click on most 'upper'-HQ to sellect all your forces and then down this way...

    That's all in the basics.

    The rest:

    I.

In WEGO-replay you watch first the full turn in all lenght from 'drone-view' (-> 3.). After this - as you like. (There is a 'kick' of course to just start at the selected ground view of the most 'climacteric' unit where the 'movie ended' in the last file you got from your 'antagonist'.)

    II.

For 'implementing your tactics' your double-click on the corresponding C2-unit (appropriate HQ's for resulting troop movements, single units for single units movements etc. -> zoom-in as needed and give your orders!)

    III.

And that is the 'geil'-point of 'Iron' :]. If you just 'one-click' a single unit (HQ or team dosen't matter -> you instantly have the 'cognition-situation' of this particular unit (means the 'intelligence' this particular unit can deliver to the 'Gesammtlage' at this particular moment !!!)

That is it, what I can say to 'explain Iron'.

I'm aware of course that you can 'kick-exploit' 'lesser' difficult levels for 'game-style' (or this scenario desginer test mode -> NICE ONE BFC!!!!!!!.) But I never bothered to try it out...

Last question: I still play CMx2 with default keys (AND I'M SINISTRAL - EDIT: means: I have to switch with my left hand from the mouse to the 'QWERT'-keys when I want to 'fine-tune' my view in 'ground view', when I accidently push the mouse with my arm-> I'm lost and have to switch back to the mouse).

Of course, I'm 'used' to this state since years, but can anybody explain me how to design NUM-pad keys for german-version CMx2? That would solve a year-old problem.

'...' means: I'm not realy shure for right English word.

  4. ... I know the Heer had camo uniforms on occasion but I have no idea how common that was and if there was any difference in pattern...

It's called Splittermuster (splinter-pattern) and is already in the game, but only as a rolled Zeltbahn on the Kraut backs.

@wyseman76: Looks very good. I like it very much.

  5. ....ILTICMSF

"Iron" is just the old "Elite" mode, and "Elite" is "Iron" for wussys nowadays.

    (From the CMSF v1.0 manual)

    Basic Training:

    - Friendly units are always spotted

    - Spotting information is instantly shared among teams (aka "Borg Spotting")

    - Troops suffer slightly fewer casualties and are less likely to panic

    - Treating wounded soldiers ("buddy aid") is extremely fast

    - Artillery and air support arrives extremely fast

    - Enemy units are always fully identified once spotted

    - The life/death status of enemy vehicles is immediately displayed

    Veteran:

    - Friendly units are always spotted

    - Enemies are not always immediately identified once spotted andappear as generic "Enemy contacts" (but less often than Elite level)

    - Spotting information is distributed among teams using the standard C2 rules

    - Treating wounded soldiers is faster than in real life

    - Artillery and air support arrives faster than in real life

    - The life/death status of enemy vehicles is hidden for a while until the crew bails out or the vehicle is burning

    Elite:

    - Friendly units need to be spotted just like enemy units. If you have a friendly unit not in line of sight or contact with another friendly unit, then the only way to find this unit is by either re-establishing contact with another of your units or by clicking through the chain of command in the game interface, jumping from unit to unit.

    - Enemies often need to be identified and until the appear as generic "Enemy contacts"

    - Treating wounded soldiers takes a realistic amount of time

    - Artillery and air support take a realistic amount of time before arriving

    - Commands may not be issued when the game is paused

    (From CMSF v1.11 ReadMe)

    - "Elite" mode changed so that friendly troops are always displayed, even when not spotted by the current unit. A new mode called "Iron" behaves like the old Elite mode.

  6. The Inferiors of the House formerly known as of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha -module will come out, ...when it's finished.

...to be finished, work on it has to have been started first...

...to start work on the Inferiors of the House formerly known as of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha -module the patches for CMSF(NATO) and CMA must be finished...

......to be finished means for the patches for CMSF(NATO) and CMA that...

    ...etc.

    Greetings from Schwarzburg-Sondershausen

  7. Is there a way to open the Normandy Demo v100.brz file for modding? Would love to have a look at the sounds!

Try to 'explode' the CMBN-demo file 'Normandy Demo v100.brz' in your CMSF/CMA - 'mod tools explode program'.

EDIT: If you don't have a 'CMSF/CMA - mod tools explode bla-bla' wait till you have the full version of CMBN.

I'm shure it will bring you along a 'CMBN-'mod tools explode program'.´But then, I think you will be more interested in actualy mod the 'true' CMBN then the demo...

Because... ...it's like this in CMSF

  8. CMx2 works this way:

You get a base game which covers a specific operational scenario/time-span. In this base game, you get the major (most common) units for each side. For CMBN this is US Army with Airborne and German Wehrmacht.

First Module (aka 'Commonwealth') will have UK-lead troops (;]) for Normandy/France/Belgium period + Waffen-SS and Fallschirmjäger for the Germans.

Second Module will cover Operation Market Garden and will bring Netherland terrain + UK and Polish paratroups and maybe Luftwaffe-Ground units.

Third module for CMBN will be 'jolly joker'-module - means: it is not clear till now what will be included. Depends on fan-demand, I guess.

All units/vehicles/formations, that where historically introduced on the Westfront after mid-Spetemper 1944, will be covered in the second Family of CMx2 Westfront, till now called 'Bulge' in the community.

  9. CM-games are more deadly than real live. I think it has (at least) do do something with human psychology. In game when a unit spots an enemy it aims as good as it can. In real life you get only a small number of individuals to realy aim a weapon on other humans and try to kill them in earnestness as long as the don't are in true live-danger for themself in the moment. Many soldiers just pretend to try to shoot the 'enemy...

  10. I really don't suggest that this is a good tactic. I just read the question, and thought: Let's try it with direct fire. So it's more meant as a test of the game engine. This method will cost time, ammo and suprise effect (against human intelligence). Also Yenkee Dog is right. 15-20 HE rounds was just a very basic aproximation. The 5 shermans for shure fired more. Nice effect was that first all rounds impacted in the bocage, but later there where some rounds going through the bocage, when it still was standing. Some test is nessecary if one could 'decrase' bocage somewhat with this method - to gain spotting-abbility through it from some distance.... But I will for wait for full functioning editor for all this stuff.

  11. ... wireless telegraph poles are cut!! exellent solution. ...

I thought the basic function of these poles is to actualy hold wires. And radio is called 'wireless' in English because the point is, that you don't need wires for transmission.

Ok, of course I know what you mean. Really good one. That small details is, what I like about the CM-Games.

  12. US tanks equipped with "Rhino" plows can breach "bocage" and "low bocage". You will see "Rhino" in the tank designation and big sawtooth attachments on the front of the tank, but these aren't available at all early in the Normandy campaign. In the demo, "Rhino" tanks are in "Busting the Bocage".

All tanks can run over simple hedges.

I play all demo-scenarios apart from the tutorial now as pbem. So I don't want to check this scenarios now for testing purposes. My question is:

Can bocage in the game made very hard/impossible to cross for Rhino-Shermans?

-> things like putting big trees in bocage (trees can be destroyed with lots of HE with the main gun of the tank, but can they stop a 'Rhino-Ronson' to just drive through?)

-> best trick for scenario designers to 'secure' a bocage against tanks would be with trees and walls to make it very hard to cross, I think. (at least improved chance for immobilisation)

I'm only loud thinking. When the full game arrives there will be lot of time to test such things in detail with the editor. :]

  13. breachv.png

I used all 5 tanks of the training scenarion to area fire with guns and mg in an concentrated efford to breach the high bocage (with trees!) on the right side next of the Allied farm-base. They did it in around 2 turns (2 min). I don't have counted how many direct hits with HE. I would think 15-20 ...at least. They blasted away a tree in the process -no kevlar-fertilizer in '44 it seems ;]. And yes, they cease fire on their own when a big breach is reached.

  14. Manual says on page 23f. that ammo sharing functions like this: If you move a unit next to another they will automaticaly share ammo as needed. Ammo bearer are teams who carry a lot of a special ammo type. They usualy get deployed as backup for a hevy weapon team. One has to be careful at setup with this. In the demo tutorial the Allies have heavy weapon platoon with 2x mortars and 2x HMGs + 2 ammo bearer teams. Both belong to the HMGs! They have no mortar granades that they could share with the mortars. So putting them together will have no result regarding ammo sharing.

  15. I mostly play pbem. All CMx2 versions. I don't really favor one setting over the other.

'WW2' is the classic 'low-tec' setting. Mass and firepower at 'close' range are mostly the deciding factors.

'Modern' is the 'complex puzzle' setting. All is fast, ultra-precise even at very long range hyper-deadly and 'un-fair'. It's mostly 'hide-shoot-hide' tactics or plain massacres.

Afghanistan is kind of middle ground between WW2 and Modern. The concealed pearl in the series, but to exotic for most and as such not as much supported by the community which is a pitty.
