In 1945, Major General Maurice Rose was killed by German gunfire near Paderborn while he was leading a convoy of his 3rd Armored Division troops. Back in 1942, he had been chief of staff of the 2nd Armored Divsion at Fort Benning. His rise up the career ladder to flag rank was very swift, in view of the fact that he was a lieutenant colonel at Benning.
