    Updated audio drivers?

    Volume settings w/i the game (if there are any).

    Loose pin running to/from speakers to the sound/system board?

    Hearing aid turned down?

    Somewhat more sane answer.

    If you have room for a pair of powered desktop speakers, plug them into the headphone jack. Since your headphones work, this should do it. Plus there's some pretty decent sets available that can add some nice bass.

  2. As far as leadership, etc. affecting the air/arty mission:

    Selecting a Spotter

    The player’s first task is to identify which unit to give responsibil-

    ity of both creating a Support Request and managing the

    resulting Support Mission. Since not all units are equal in this

    regard, here are some things to keep in mind when selecting a

    Spotter:

    Line of Sight (LOS) - quality LOS to the target area always

    makes for more accurate and effective results

    Unit Type - specialized observer teams and HQs are better than

    the average combat unit

    C2 Links - ideally the Spotter should show green connections to

    all superior units

    Stress Level - suppressed or shaky units don’t make the best

    Spotters

    As a general rule, any US ground unit can theoretically request

    both types of Support, while only a few specialized Forward

    Observer units can call in Artillery for the Syrian side. The dif-

    ferences between the two sides are realistic and based on

    traditional training doctrine as well as the availability of C2

    equipment.

    Depending on how urgently Support is needed, the Responsive-

    ness rating (see below) may or may not be critically important.

    Responsiveness reflects the difficulty a specific Spotter has in

    getting in touch with a specific Asset and securing permission

    to use it. For example, a JTAC (Joint Tactical Air Controller) is

    typically headed by an officer with “time in the cockpit” and

    can really speak the lingo with on station aircraft. On top of

    that, this is the unit that is organizationally tasked with calling

    in aircraft, therefore it doesn’t have to go through layers of

    command to access them. Another variable is the JTAC’s equip-

    ment which, in ideal circumstances, is the best available for

    such work. Compare this to a “run of the mill” Rifle Squad

    Leader trying to reach an aircraft via 3 or 4 “hops” up the

    Chain of Command. It can be done, but it is obviously more

    clunky than having the JTAC call in the same Request.

    Remember, if the Spotter doesn’t appear to be up to the task,

    another Spotter can be selected. To do this, either deselect the

    current unit or click on the “X” in the upper left hand corner of

    the Support Roster. There are no game penalties for checking

    out how various units pair up with different Assets.

    These are the Parameters for all Air Missions:

    Target - sets the size and shape of the area to hit:

    Point - focuses on a single Action Spot or unit

    Area - one click for center and another click for perimeter

    Mission - responsible for establishing the scope of the attack:

    Light - lighter Munitions

    Medium - mix of lighter and medium Munitions

    Heavy - medium Munitions with a smattering of lighter

    Type - sets the munition mix based on the target type:

    General - favors unguided HE munitions

    Armor - weights towards ATGMs

    Personnel - favors HE munitions

    Delay - establishes when to start the support, prep time inclu-

    sive. The options are:

    None - no extra delay

    5 Min - sets for 5 minutes min

    10 Min - sets for 10 minutes min

    15 Min - sets for 15 minutes min

  4. Scout snipers are the DMs for the Marines. They'll be attached to squads, platoons as needed, though they generally (and prefer) to work on their own. The scout sniper commander (1st/2nd Lt) will give direction to his teams as needed.

    I think in the early onset of the Iraq war, the sniper teams were not utilized correctly. They were being treated as glorified grunts instead of being released for snooping and pooping and causing hate and discontent.

    From Wiki: The AGM-114L, or Longbow Hellfire, is a fire-and-forget weapon: equipped with a millimeter wave (MMW) radar seeker, it requires no further guidance after launch and can hit its target without the launcher being in line of sight of the target. It also provides capability in adverse weather and battlefield obscurants.

    Since being fielded, Hellfire missiles have proven their effectiveness in combat in Operation Just Cause in Panama, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Allied Force in Kosovo, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and most recently, Operation Iraqi Freedom—where they have been fired successfully from Apache and Cobra attack helicopters, Kiowa scout helicopters, and Predator unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The Israeli Defence Forces have used them extensively against Palestinian targets.

    Between 2001 and 2007, the U.S. has fired over 6,000 Hellfires in combat. The US military has found the missile effective in urban areas as the relatively small warhead reduces the risk of civilian casualties. The laser guidance allows a skilled operator to put a missile through the window of a building.

    In 2008 the usage of the AGM-114N variant caused controversy in the United Kingdom when it was found out that these thermobaric munitions were added to the Royal Air Force (RAF) arsenal in secrecy. Thermobaric weapons have been condemned as "brutal" by human rights groups. The British Ministry of Defence circumvents this by calling the AGM-114N an "enhanced blast weapon".

    It seems there are laser-guided and radar-guided variants. Either way, it sounds like they are self-designating munitions, meaning it shouldn't matter what type of unit requested the attack. As long as accurate coordinates are given and the helo is 'talked-on' to the right area, all should be well. And in the case of CCM, the target is being pointed/clicked.

    I wonder if perhaps the sim is taking a look at the requesting unit's CAS/CFF ability?

  6. It goes without saying then if you create scenarios for the purpose of a reasonable QB, you know the mission and disposition of the enemy forces.

    True. But two steps could be taken.

    1. Create an enemy with the type of force mix of numbers that would make it difficult to beat/require more strategy.

    2. Download QB type scenarios created by other users. The nice thing about creating a QB type scenario is an Op Order can be created so you know exactly what needs to be done.

  7. I don't ihave a problem with Steam if i know that's what's required to run the game. But what gets me is that I had bought a game and didn't even realize Steam was needed. Imagine my disappointment when I found out I couldn't even play the game most of the time since I'm usually away from an Internet connection.

  8. I suggest you download the scenario editor guide that a few guys put together - I'll think you'll find it in the repositry or CMMODS.

    If you can't find it - from memory what you want to do is export the template and just save it as a txt file in My Documents or anywhere on your computer. Input your briefing notes and then 'save as' into your Combat Mission Shock Force\Game Files directory or Combat Mission Shock Force\Game Files\Scenarios directory.

    I think what you're expecting is the CMSF to be able to import a file from anywhere on the computer - it won't - it defaults to one or two directories and I think its the two above.

    That should solve your problem - if I've understood it right!

    As to the editing the file within the CMSF editor - no you can't, that's why you have to export it in the first place. Its a fiddly process but once you've done it a couple of times you'll get used to it.

    Thanks. About bed time now. I'll give a try tomorrow. I think when I try export though it only gives me the choice to save it w/i the Game Files of CMSF; no computer folder choices. But again, I'll give it a go tomorrow.

    You can use my mod manager. It really makes dealing with mods easier when you want to start trying out different uniform sets and vehicle textures.

    I don't think the icons are able to become different shapes. I may be wrong, but I don't recall any mods like that.

    So you're in Okinawa? I spent some time there at Camp Shields. Also spent some time in the jungles of JWTC and Camp Hansen. ;) I used to party at Kadena and Okinawa City.

    I got V 1.1 earlier. V 1.2 wouldn't even allow me to download it. Some error message. I posted what it was at the place I was trying to download.

    Haven't had a chance to get in depth with the manager. I've been building my first scenario all day. :)

  10. I am pretty sure you could make the icons rectangular by editing the alpha channels. I will give it a shot sometime in the next few days. I kept the icons circular because I was trying to replicate the FBCB2 icons. Thanks for down loading them.

    Ahhhhh, alpha channels. That was my next guess :confused:. Okay, maybe not. Thanks for looking into it though.

    Good to hear. I've been here since '91. I actually spent 3 months on Shields back in '92. That was when the MARS program was still active. Since I was providing free calls back home for everyone, they treated me like a king. Though the Seabees were always a little easier to get along with. Must be the cammies vice the dungarees...

    And I've been working on Camp Hansen since I sepped in '96.

  12. Okay, thanks. I found them. I'll give them a go and see what they look like.

    Well, this is my first time messing with any of the mods. First of all, it took me a bit to find the Data\Z folder :P. Once I figured that out I copied the NATO icons folder in.

    It's a step in the right direction. However, the icons are still circular. If anyone has an idea on how to make friendlies (US) blue rectangles and OPFOR red diamonds, I'm all ears.

  13. I work on a contract for the Marines using various sims to help them train. These sims include CAN, VBS2, MAGTF XXI, CCM6, MTWS, and others. These all tend to use MIL-STD-2525B symbols w/i the sim.

    Is there anyone out there who could help me figure out how to replace the symbols that hover above the teams on the field? I'm not a code writer so I have no idea where to start.

    I'm in Okinawa so forgive me if I seem to post/reply at odd times. I'm currently +15 hrs EST.
