  1. Most of a klom sounds good. Some protection from incidental (battlefield) environmental effects, basically. And not much incoming from the sides, hopefully.

Edit: Of course, we'll push them much closer than that, relying on their bullet hoses and large ammo supplies to suppress anyone that's going to be rude enough to actually shoot at the vehicle. Probably best to have the crunchies dismounted though...

Also, in battle, you aren't always free to choose how close you get to the enemy- or rather how close the enemy gets to you!

  2. I understand actually that judgement day is May 21st of this year and the end of the world is October 21st so you may not even get the base game. Unless of course this was the plan all along and heaven is playing CMBN....

So true. A major computer virus, released by China will mutate and latch onto CMBN as it's being downloaded by all of us, on May 21st. The only effect it will have on the game is to make all the soldiers look and sound like Justin Bieber! The mental anguish of the Combat Mission community will be so great that it will rip apart the Earth's core.

  3. And while the explosions do have more oily grit, debris and flames in them, they still aren't convincing.

That's kind of a problem- the more realistic computer graphics become, the more out of place the slightest irregularity is. The nice thing with CM1 was that it brought a lot of realism, yet not even attempting photo-realism, so you didn't feel the need for things to be perfect.

  4. We can't all blame it on Hollywood guys. The sad truth is Hollywood churns out whatever makes money and they make money by people buying and going to go see what they like. There have been plenty of first class story driven movies without special effects over the last couple of years...they just don't rake in cash like the stuff you are poking fun at. Nothing wrong with that but I wouldn't go so far as to pin this all on Hollywood :P For the record I can't stand Hollywood myself or many of its 'citizens'.

I do remember hearing some stuff on the old tv show "WKRP in Cincinnati" and how it was one of the top shows at the time, but some of the executives at the network that it played on, had personal problems with the guy who created the show, so they ended up cancelling it- even though it was one of their top shows. I think a lot of times it's not really about money but about people throwing their weight around. That goes for government, and most any other large organizations, where some people have a lot of power.

  5. I read the first couple of stories in that series. Then it became too much of a muchness and I dropped it.

True! It did seem to get pretty repetitive after a while. But the first book is a classic! If I remember right, I think there was a board game made on it when I was a kid. Of course, today, there wouldn't be many people that have even heard about it to bother making a game based on it.

  6. Aaaaarrrrghhhhhh! NOOOOOOOOOOOO! Nononononnono...

Sorry. Mention of that horrible blight on the consciousness of the viewing public tends to override my meds, you see. I can't always be held responsible for broken furniture or personal injuries inflicted at such times. Hope you understand.

LOL! Growing up reading lots of Sci-Fi, I would be happy if they did a future CM game based on David Drake's "Hammer's Slammers", a mercenary armored regiment, with hover tanks, plasma guns, etc., that would travel to different planets to fight for the highest bidder.

  7. Hah. They've been predicting the end of hex and chit board wargames since the 1970s and we're actually in a renaissance of sorts with superb titles coming out from lots of publishers. I'd be surprised if someone didn't take up our hobby as we drop away.

LOL! Well, I have thought about how if a worldwide catastrophe destroyed the infrastructure to the point that there was no electricity available, much less things like computers being produced, etc., board wargames would be a treasure and I'd get back into playing all those that have been collecting dust on my shelves!

    :)

  8. As my oldest nephews started becoming teens, I really hoped to get them interested in the games I enjoy, but they just don't seem to have the patience. They want flashy, fast and something that takes little or no planning or thought. They judge wargames by the standard of FPS's and don't care for rising above, to command large units.

I can't help but think as new generations come, they will be even more Attention Deficit Disordered and as we die off, things like CM will follow us!

  9. at 63 i find 1st person shooter types to be too much for this plodding oldster, but CMBN is more like Chess.. only more fun - w/ 1000s options & outcomes. Perfect for playing by mail if you're not in a hurry, or real time, if you have the time/opponent. Go get it ~ let me know when you're ready to PBEM :)

Yeah! As a kid, I had plenty of time to spend on board and computer games, but as I got older, it was hard to find the long stretches of time to plunge into something. That's why I love the WEGO of CM. I can fit a battle into many individual time periods.

  10. That's a shame. I wonder why the Pacific always seems to get short shrift in wargaming. Heck, we haven't even had a good carrier game in almost a generation! Oh well. Guess I'll have to content myself with playing the Rising Storm Pacific mod for Heroes of Stalingrad on those inevitably sultry August nights. :)

I would absolutely love a modern remake of SSG's Carriers At War! I had the original on my Commodore 64 and I can't count the hours I spent playing it! The newer versions improved it, especially with the cool, if rather basic attack animations, but they could really make it great today!

  11. Honestly, people who obsess over historical casualty stats being reflected in a wargame should stick to reading history books. Because, frankly, that's the only way you're going to see what you're looking for.

    Steve

Very true! In something like CM I may feel a bit more like my troops are real men that I don't want to get killed needlessly, but, in reality, no game will ever truly give you that feeling- they are still going to be computer generated troops in a GAME and you aren't going to be as careful with them as you would real men- for most of us we play because it's fun, while real combat is not fun- it is horrible and losing just one man would be crushing to a leader.

I love seeing CM develop greater realism, starting with CMBO and progressing, but in the end, that realism will always be partial and that's actually a good thing, because most of us want to enjoy playing- as a GAME.
