  1. After installing Marines, my CMSF literally went crazy. After loading any given scenario, the game lets me play anywhere from 10 seconds to 15 mins, then an error message and a crash occur. Not only does this happen with Marines, but my old CMSF scenarios play out the same way.

I am running a Bootcamp Win XP under OS/X Tiger with older Nvid drivers. I also have a techinical data from Win error message if it is of any help.

To make things worse, I lost my old CMSF setup file and licence a while ago so i cannot really go back to plain CM - Is this it?! Is this the end of CMSF for me until OS/X version comes out?! (sometime within X amount of years) Did Marines "break" Bootcamp compatiability?

Edit: disregard... in my post crash stupidity impulse, i haven't checked all the current threads...

  2. Experiencing 3rd crash in a row (I am freaking out at this point) with Marines. Windows gives me an error message with a Send/Don't Send to Microsoft option and locks the game. I'm running Bootcamp (Os/X Tiger, Win XP service pack 2), so i am very, very, very worried about Marines and compatiability options at the moment. Original CMSF never displayed this kind of behavior.

For 30 seconds that the game did let me play i noticed vastly improved performance, so source of crashes in puzzling.

    Any suggestions?

  3. Whoever said a cat's face can't express emotion should take a look at that picture. I see a mixture of pure anger coupled with some thoughts of pooping in someone's shoe :D

    Steve

Anyone else is seeing Stewie in that cat's facial expression?

And Steve and the rest of BFC posse - stop tormenting the masses :D

  4. Huntarr,

Who is usually assigned to carry that juggernaut? I mean 20kg weapon (plus ammo and kit) on a 13km hike ... I carried Carl Gustav on 11 km march once - the only wish after 6km was to fall down and die somewhere under a tree, after 8km i wished i did steroids, and after 9km mark it was all a blur :D

  5. The difference between modern units tends to be much more subtle than WW2 equivalents. Upgraded T-55 is quite capable of killing M1 (modern day Tiger) giving a first shot opportunity, so in game terms everything with a cannon should be treated like it will be able to defeat all of your armored assets.

I find that looking at real life counterparts of vihicles feautured in CMSF helps immensely to better use your assets. For example, everything over 12.7mm will penetrate BMP side and rear armor - it works exactly the same in the game, forcing the player to either only use dismouted BMPs for fire support or not to expose rear and side armor to HMG fire. Mostly it's all common sense and knowledge of tactical applications of real life systems.

  6. I would object to SAW's inability to be useful in close combat. I was using it during FIBUA clearing rooms quite successfully (with Miles gear on, further adding to the weight). You can't really aim with it using iron signts (or x3.5 scope on our C9s) while on the move, but from the hip this bad boy puts alot of fire downrange very quick and in close combat i'd take it over rifle any day. But i'm abit biased towards machine guns - after carrying one for a while i strted to think that our regular C7s were pea shooters as it is quite a pathetic feeling to shoot a rifle after an MG :D

  7. While on the subject, i think mouseover pop-ups would also be very helpful interface feature (especially for newer players). Say you have a contact icon 500m in front, moving a mouse over the icon will cause a little box with whatever known information to appear (eg., "Sound contact, Infantry, Danger range 300m". Pretty much the same level of information should be given as the old "enter" command provided, just in more compact form (with an on/off option provided of course).

  8. That is great news Steve, glad to hear things are looking good for you guys. I want to thank you, Charles, Martin, Dan, and the rest of the extremely hardworking Battlefront crew for providing us with such an outstanding product and hours (days, years) of incredibly engaging entertainment. Really looking forward to the Marines!

I second that. It's been a ride ever since downloading Beyond Overlord demo while bored on a Sunday night (followed by an immidate order and agonizing 2 weeks of replaying the same two missions over and over again while waiting for CD to arrive). While knowing nothing about wargaming prior to CM experience, it became the gaming franchise i've committed the most time to!

Now hurry up and give us Marines, we are going crazy over here!!! :D :D :D

  9. WoW,

. . . but with the new module about to burst on the scene - and with new purchase decisions - can Steve / BFC make any updated comment on when we will see an OS X port and what the license policies will be for those who have already bought Windows versions?

Will you let us convert our Widows licenses to Mac when the time comes?

Many thanks boys . . . heat up!

    Thomas

    +1 on that question.

Making Mac users re-pay for 3+ modules will seem abit unfair.

  10. What is the best way of managing mods? Just dump them all in my Z folder?

Yep. CMSF is not as mod rich as previous installements, so the few mods that are out there, are not very hard to keep organized. Most come with their own folders provided by deisgners to identify them.

  11. In real life you will not have the eagle-eye view of the battlefield we have in CM. If you look at the game from ground level, dust clouds will not tell you much about enemy location unless you are looking from high ground - just the way it should be in real world.

IMHO, physical modelling of dust is fine. The fact that it reveals your position is unfortunate side effect of having non-frustrating command and control system (the one where you can zoom around battlefield as you wish).

Using "slow" and "hunt" helps as well.

  12. no mod Balkan war found on CMMods.

And the campaign crashes and exits to desktop after first briefing .

Use search function on CMMODS - search for 1) "RHZ Balkan/Euro Mod supplement" and 2) "mod CMSF balkan war ground"

Are you sure you're using the right CMSF version? (1.08) Campaign seemed to work OK for me (on 3rd mission atm).

  14. Hmm,

So Serbia committed bunch of war crimes, while sheepish Albanians, Bosniaks, and Croats were endless victims? Please... War crimes were rampant on all sides, yet only Serbs are persecuted.

Biggest mistake Serbs made was not caring what the world thought of them, while other ethnic groups ran active PR campaigns. Kosovo was a cultural and religious center of Serb civilization with over 600 Orthodox chruches there (most of them burned by now), the only reason why Albanians became the majority was Tito's draconian re-population policies post WW2. 50 years later, bunch of migrant workers take the land from indiginious population - how fair is that?

Albania (and now Kosovo) is a huge problem for most Europeans, as it is practically a criminal hub and a transit point for most of Aghan heroin going into Europe. Albanian mafia is into some very nasty things (illigal human organ trading, modern slave trade, and is probably the most influencial in Western Europe. State legal system is pretty much a replica of medival clan law with an Islamic twist... Helping a potentially extremist Muslim crime empire in the middle of Europe was one of the "smartest" moves on NATO's side.

People need to relax with Ukraine as well. "Orange" has 29 days till it completely rotts and it looks like Timoshenko will be the new President. She also appears to have cut a deal with Kremlin to "freeze" controversial issues - status of Black Sea fleet, persecution of Russian language and etc.

  15. John,

But how reliable are the cell phone recordings? Such things are not even admissable in most Western courts as solid evidence. Besides, there is alot of info missing: how did they intercept the calls? exact time and date of calls? what is the service provider? who owns the service provider? what numbers and who are they registred to? can they pin specific faces to people on either end of the line plus their GPS locations?

On one side we have entire North Ossetian and South Ossetian populations stating that tanks did not start moving until late morning/afternoon of Aug.8 We have video recordings of Ossetian general desperately calling for help, we have videos of Georgians having fun in Tshinkvali, we have videos of Georgians massing prior to attack, and now we have Western defense analysts, intel agencies, and even a US senator coming forward and stating that Georgia was the initiator and the attack was definately planned.

On another hand, we have cell phone recordings (which Georgians mysteriously held for 3 weeks), which could be made by anyone to anyone. Any intellegence service with half a brain would have flooded the city with its agents before an innvasion of this scale, and making calls like that from South Ossetia is good insurance policy for later...

All in all, i take video over audio any day, especially audio from sketchy cell phone calls that could be made by Kermit the Frog to Saaskashvili himself. I think this cell phone interception nonsense is a desparate attept by Saak to get EU support back (Sarkozy started calling Georgian government "Saaskashvili's regime", many other followed... so even a cushy placement at Yale PoliSci department is becoming a distant possibility, especially if all goes well and Obama wins).
