My first impression after 15 minutes of the demo?
To put in a pre-order.
Absolutely amazing work, Battlefront.
-
I was in the process of making some scenarios a couple of months ago, but my wife has been in the hospital and I haven't had thetime.
-
Yeah, +2 from me as well.
I like seeing the campaign progression in the campaign brief, please keep that!
-
I'm on mission 2 of the German campaign and, as per usual, I have no idea how to effectively recon for hidden ATGM positions when my scouts are sitting around in what amounts to open topped jeeps.
I'm having a really good time with the campaign once the panzertruppen arrive, though!
-
That's pretty much all I can remember. The corrections were made over a long period of time and I don't keep comprehensive lists of changes like this.
Steve
Sounds like your entire design process is fundamentally flawed!
-
The Army, to include Active, Guard, and Reserve components, has somewhere between 1-1.5 million.
*edit*
I hate to use Wikipedia, but it cites a total number of 1,156,616 in 2009.

The Muj get 500 bonus points in every campaign mission.
-
You're a company commander. A company are your core troops.
-
Snipers with Dragunovs should not have any better spotting ability at night, it's not like their scopes are going to suddenly remove darkness or something. I don't know if the vehicles have a rudimentary NOD, but on these types of missions, my prime spotter/killers have been BMPs.
-
Could have some Iranian air? They have some pretty advanced air forces i believe, and its not inconceivable they could assist Syria somehow, at least as a small one time sneaky tactic at least
By flying over Iraq or Turkey to get to Syria?
-
I just played The Ottoman Citadel with the Mujahideen and it was alright, but I think I prefer the tactical challenges presented by the Soviets.
I will say that it was a very sad day for the Spetznaz, however.
-
I also noticed that the Bren guns do not have tripods.
Just kidding. I think that TO&E issues should be sorted because, like others said, simulating casualties should be up to the scenario designer.
-
I am, as it turns out, the worst Air Assault company commander of all time.
-
I haven't spent any time listening to them, but I would expect Pashto. Most of the 1980 scenarios take place in Pashtunistan and most of the US-Saudi-Pakistanian funded mujahideen groups were Pashtun, to include Hekmetyar.
Could always be Dari, though.
-
I have not yet gone to the other side. I am still soaking wet in my snow covered trench, nervously scanning spurs and far away ridge lines for any sight of the ghostly enemy.

I (at least) didn't say they dont play different, but more that it is not like a fully different game. If I understand Clavicula Nox right thats what he means as well. Some of the first posts of this thread mentioned a fully different game, while that is their respectful opinion, I don't agree. However it surely plays different enough, so you don't hear me complaining.
In mission 3 my own hinds keep gunning my own troops to smithereens, apart from losses in mission 2. Perhaps I'll start all over again.
I think I've figured out the Hinds. Generally speaking, the actual spotting abilities of the platoon/company commanders is pretty poor. Probably due to equipment, doctrine, and lower ability than their 2009 Western counterparts. So in my mind, the Hinds are given a general part of the map to target and, based on the relevant factors, the spotter has the chance to relay the location of friendly forces. If the spotter fails to correctly give friendly positions, then the Hind has a chance of using the friendlies as a target. Obviously I don't know if that is how it works or not, but I have been a bit more successful with my air support by keeping that idea in mind. Generally speaking, I try to establish my air attacks to be as far away from my troops as possible, while assigning the largest area I can to the Hind. The pilot will normally engage any target he sees. In mission 3, for example, I called for Hinds in the very beginning of the mission and tasked them with a large area over the major roads on the other side of the map and they were able to blast away at targets for a couple of minutes.
Like I mentioned before, I have not had much luck in getting the artillery/mortars to be useful. I'm not sure how to handle it when my guys have 6-12 minutes of preparation and spotting time.
I just can't stop raving about how good this game is. I've already recommended it to my Arma 2 team, wargaming friends on 2 different message boards, and Facebook. It is seriously my favorite of the entire CM series spanning from CM:BO-CM:A. I expected to like it and be mildly amused with the thought of killin' Commies with my Righteous Muj brethren, but I have completely gone the other direction and found empathy with the Soviet soldier of the 1980s. I mean, you could replace the Soviet soldiers with US/NATO soldiers in any of these missions and it would be the same thing.
-
Well, I suppose the Soviets could have won early had they controlled the borders around Herat, Jalalabad, and along Paktika, Paktia, Kandahar, Khowst, Zabul, Kunar, Helmand, and Badakhstan.
Anyways, 1980 was the "Blunder around" portion of Soviet-Afghan, kinda like 2001-2005/06ish in OEF.
*edit*
I think the point is simply to get your troops through the campaign. That was the impression I was left with.
-
Finished 1980 campaign. This is the first CMx2 campaign I have ever finished. Because you do not get reinforcements during the campaign, I felt like a haggard company commander desperately trying to balance meeting objectives and not getting my soldiers killed. Game brings back alot of memories in a way that Shock Force never did. Well done, again.
In general I found that there was not enough time to use artillery and mortar fire, but I became quite fond of the Hinds. That was, until, a careless (and probably drunk) Hind pilot decided to strafe my veteran 1st platoon whilst they were trying to flush the Muj out of some farmland.

Do i suck or are the campaign missions designed to be ruthlessly hard and nearly impossible to win?
Now to spoiler warning:
First mission was easy. But after that i should do something what i consider to be impossible. Today i was doing third mission in 1980 campaign (night ambush) and even when majority of enemies lying dead and me loosing 6 men i still lost the mission because some did get away. Casualty treshold-limits seems to be somewhat off. True war ain't fair and CMA should not be either, but it makes my small ego to crumble. And when my ego crumbles it makes me to cry. This far i've played to 6 or 7 mission, and i must admit that half of them are somewhat impossible to finish with victory on my side.
I admit that my CM-skills are bit rusty.
In campaign i'm even more attached to my men than in CMSF because it seems to be quite clear that i have lots less men at my disposal and they get hurt much more easily. 6 men wounded would have made my not to care in CMSF, but in CMA it makes me to re-play the mission.
Overall i like it. Good game, but my impressions of the campaign are not so good. I haven't touched single-scenarios yet. Maybe i should?
I think some of the victory conditions need to be tweaked, but I am looking at the campaign goal as survival instead of trying to win missions.
I haven't had much difficulty with the actual missions.

Here's a good overview of the problems Russia faced, and overcame, in Chechnya:

Steve
How many of those problems were repeated again in Georgia/S. Ossetia?

I'm absolutely loving it. I don't have the same "Oh my god!" moments when my troopers die, but I always notice the empty slot the next mission. It's easier for me to relate to the Soviet-truppen than to the BLUFOR in CMSF, which is something I wasn't expecting. I wish my guys carried more ammunition, though. I think I remember reading somewhere that they didn't carry much, so I'm sure it's realistic and just something to get used to.
My favorite mission, thus far, has been #6 in the 1980 campaign. It, however, also frustrated me. I achieved my objective, save for 1 truck that was disabled by small arms fire and took no casualties. I inflicted pretty heavy casualties (54 dead, 29 wounded, 3 MIA)on the Muj...and it was settled in a draw.
I failed 2 objectives: Friendly and Enemy condition, but I struggle to understand how I could have achieved those. My troops didn't even disembark from their vehicles and most of the battle was fought by 1 BMP and 1 very lucky T55. The Muj also received a "Bonus" of 500 points. Why? Should help with spoiler, I think.

I hope some makes a 'faces of the Soviet Union' mod because at the moment every Soviet troop looks like they come from Mongolia.
Weren't the majority of the Soviet forces comprised of soldiers from Central Asia in the belief that "Central Asians would like Central Asians"?
