  1. Another question about ammo sharing:

    I have half a rifle squad that seems to have dropped their MG42 and K98 for a pistol and panzerfaust due to lack of 7.92 ammo. When I move a friendly HMG team with plenty of ammo into the same room with them, shouldn't they switch back to their normal weapons? Does it take a few turns?

    Edit: The manual indicates they need to be part of the same formation. So, my HMG team will not share with the squad in a different platoon? What if they were in the weapons platoon of the squad's company? What if you attached a tank to an HMG platoon in a QB, would the MG's leech that ocean of 7.92 from the tank when they get low?

  2. Thanks for starting this thread, Mord.

    I know the reasons (massive calculation work under the hood beyond other games, no multi-core support, etc.) that CM:BN puts out low frame-rates on current high-end systems. However, being honest, I can say that for me, this is the one aspect of the game that I am a bit disappointed in.

    I did my first DIY build at Xmas this year and my system is as follows:

    Intel i7-950 Quad core 3.07GHz

    GeForce GTX470 (ASUS ENGTX470 GDDR5 1280MB)

    ---Engine Clock 607 MHz

    ---Shader Clock 1215 MHz

    ---Memory Clock 3348 MHz ( 837 MHz GDDR5 )

    ---RAMDAC 400 MHz

    ---Memory Interface 320-bit

    6 GB Kingston RAM

    ASUS Sabertooth X58 motherboard

    W7-64 Ult OS

    So, still a beefy system by current standards. My monitor is old (and about to be replaced) and only goes up to 1280x1024. On highest settings the game runs a bit sluggishly. I've experimented with in-game settings and Nvidia CP settings and nothing makes much of a difference, save turning off shadows. The game doesn't run butter-smooth under any circumstances.

    There are no glitch issues--just low frame rates by my taste. I need to clock things with FRAPS, but I don't have it yet.

    At this point, IMHO, I'd be happy if Battlefront did nothing else to the game going forward, other than add multi-core support to significantly increase frame rates. After that, I'd have them add armor target arcs. Everything else is a minor quibble not worth mentioning. I love the game, I'd just like to have it take full advantage of my system.

    Nice! I built mine in November and its basically identical, with an Asus P6X58D-E instead of the Sabertooth. My 470 is EVGA but is clocked the same. And I'll say I have similar, less than enchanting framerates. I would like to dig into this problem and find the source but I haven't had the time. My assumption was that CMBN would be CPU sensitive as opposed to GPU sensitive, and even then the 470 is hardly a slouch. It spews 60+ in nearly everything I've thrown at it since construction. When I turned off the AA/Multisample option my frames were pretty smooth, but I love AA :(. And yeah no shadows helps significantly too but that is not an option IMO.

    I have EVGA Precision to clock frames but I haven't used it with this game yet. Also I run 1680x1050, so that's a slight difference.

    Interested to hear if you dig up any good fixes and I'll do the same.

I love the tank-turret-towards-known-threat and anything else the AI does to reassure me that it will take care of itself reasonably if trouble arises while I am floating over a different section of the battlefield. Or, as the enemy, indicate that it will give me a good challenge with proper deployment, calling in effective support fire, etc. Believable ai behavior seals the immersion deal for me.

  4. Used to reboot from saves when I lost a guy or 4 from a silly Tac AI decission. But that is rare these days.

    I am doing this a lot with the CMBN campaigns. I don't like doing it but I'm scared of getting to a later mission and having sustained too many casualties to complete, and then having to replay all those missions again. Especially when you don't have much time to play, just an hour or two every other night. Thats basically the point where you end the campaign early and feel like you wasted all that time getting to the point you're at since you can't continue.

    This is happening to me in the Road to Monteburg so in Panzer Marsch I'm conserving life as much as possible, even if it means playing through the mission over and over again. I admit that it's actually kind of sapping some of the fun out of it. Feels gamey. Strange. But what else can you do?

    Maybe I should just stick to single battles till I have more time.

    Me too. This is the only thing keeping me from playing in a higher difficulty. I love the artillery system in this game, but the cm x1 on map mortar system was great too. I would love to see times reduced for this specific situation. And maybe a little for the medium stuff too. Not that light and medium on map assets need to be any more powerful - they have become the cornerstone of my infantry tactics.

  6. I might be wrong here, but I think when you click an HQ the units under that HQ light up, but that doesn't actually tell you if they are "in command". It just shows you who's in his formation.

    From the Manual:

    "7. Chain of Command - displays the parent formations of the selected unit. A

    green icon indicates that the HQ unit/formation is currently in contact with

    the next higher HQ unit/formation, while a red icon indicates lack of contact.

    In the previous example, if the icon beside the “1st Platoon” entry is

    red, then the 1st Plt is out of contact with A Company HQr, while - if the icon

    next to “A Company” is green - then Company A HQ is in contact with Battalion

    HQ.

    Note: this part of the interface does not tell you anything

    about the selected unit being in command or out of

    command with its parent HQ. That is indicated in the C2

    Link (point 9 below)."

    So, when you select a squad, and see a red X next to "1st Platoon", does that mean the 1st platoon HQ is out of contact with the company HQ, or your selected squad (from 1st platoon) is out of contact with the 1st platoon HQ?

    It contradicts itself, right? Confusing. I liked the CMx1 command lines but I'm not really missing them, especially if I can just square this little detail away.

  7. GaJ, you've never blown through a hedgerow with one? I'm always frantically looking for more after burning through 2 engi squads worth in an attack. You can also blow through a doorless wall into a house which (apparently) will shock the defenders as well as giving you a better route.

    I have been loving the usefulness of these charges compared to CM1 during my playthrough of the "Road to..." campaign.

  8. That reminds me:

    The road you start out near goes straight for a while, and then hooks to the left into the town, kind of an L shape if I remember right. In my game the AT gun was among the buildings, firing right down that road after the hook, the short leg of the L, perfectly denying entrance that way for armor. Like the panzerschreck, impossible to get supporting fire on. It was a really good position, one I assumed to be set by the scenario designer. These tight blind corners are killing me.

    Just finished the mission to eliminate the German FO team near a farmhouse. Killed the team, took some pretty serious casualties from the AI's ever present quick barrages, and didn't actually send anyone into the farmhouse so I think I had a defeat. Good thing I have a few saves to choose from. I drove right up the right side through the hedgerows - I noticed some German tanks but they played no part in the battle. It was actually pretty light resistance except for the artillery and one or two pockets.

    Is there a way to see casualties inflicted by artillery at the end of the battle? The spotter does not seem to get credit, but I could be wrong. I'd also like to know what caliber was falling on me, so I can get to know what is what as far as artillery in this game.

  9. Everytime I surrender in frustration during this campaign I am amazed to see just how few German units are inflicting such horrible casualties on me.

    I think its the 2nd or 3rd battle, right before the mission where you have eliminate the 81mm mortars. There was a single panzerschreck who could hold a whole crossroads by himself - area firing or tossing grenades at infantry and sending the Shermans up in flames. Can't get any supporting fire on him since he's around a bend. Can't get close and mass fire on him without getting a grenade or schreck round into my closely packed troops.

    If the AI is this tough I really dread my first PBEM games. Mortars and artillery are so deadly, its been very difficult to get local fire superiority without getting plastered by a barrage.

  10. Pretty meager system requirements too, the original runs like a champ on my single core 3.2 Ghz + GT240. Correct me if I'm wrong but these games scale well from low end machines to more powerful rigs.

    +1, Great game. Although, hard to believe the armor damage system is based on hit-points... it wasn't like that in OPFP, was it? Can't remember. Seems just silly considering the rest of the game.

  11. A friend of mine found this currency (maybe the pacific version of the French money given to GI's on D-Day? Victory Dollars, IIRC?) mixed in with a rent payment of US cash. Near as I can tell, the written text reads: "2nd Platoon, J Co., 165th, 27th Div. Okinawa Ryukyu Islands 11 June 1945" followed by signatures, assumed to be the men of 2nd platoon. Most of those are pretty tough to make out, the one I can see completely is John J. Walsh. Thats all my friend could see too, looking at it in person. I am trying to get a better picture from him, and a look in person myself.

    I wonder if anyone has any information about this unit? Google searching, I found very little about the 165th, which seems to be the wartime designation of the 69th New York Regiment, and didn't see a "J" company mentioned anywhere. In fact a website about another regiment said "J" was not used to letter their companies, I'm not sure if that applies force-wide. If so maybe this is just a fake.

    I think he'd like to deliver this to one of those signatures if they're still alive, or maybe their family, or sell the thing on E-Bay.
