  1. It is necessary to know remeber two facts

    1. Soviet FM - give a template and the recipe as it do American FM. American FM (for example, FM 71-1 TANK AND MECHANIZED INFANTRY COMPANY TEAM) is a mix for the theory, principles, wishes and ready decisions, templates, with detailed drawings.

    Soviet FM - "Boevoi Ustav" - has 3 parts

    1 part - "a regiment, a division" - confidential even now

    2 part "Company, a battalion"

    3 part - "Platoon, sqad, tank" - for training of soldiers, NCO and younger leaders.

    Only 3 part has ready decisions and templates. 1 and 2 part - only principles and wishes, going from 3части. Never been to understand the reasons why it is specified anything in 2 part - if not read 3. Or if to read - "Boevoi Ustav" -is negligent.

    Looking at a picture - level a battalion (as the big map of Syria for SMSF - 1-2 infantry companies, a company of tanks and another)

    It is necessary to think that it principles, instead of a template of construction of defence (and not differently).

    Here there is a requirement "Boevoi Ustav" - that the commander (level a battalion, a company and below) was in that point - where the battle place, situation is well visible and it is possible quickly and accurately get orders, quickly to react - so quck accurately that probably.

    The commander of a platoon in the Soviet doctrine should be guided in conditions and employ the decision of a fighting vehicle, infantry and all weight of the platoon.

    The commander does not battle, does not shoot - he observes, observes, observes, get reports and does accurate orders, and observes too. Also remember that soviet have no FBC2B, ha-ha

    Analogue of the commander in CMSF is 'Observation unit' -are spies, comand groups, simply weak units. They stand on a high building, a grief, 'good seen' platform. Hold fire and only give to YOU(to the player) knowledge of conditions.

    Fig2 Specifies lines - where AT Plt, 2nd eshelon or reserves can be to go to battle. It gives understanding - that before battle - it is necessary to study attentively ways of the enemy to the position and to think over measures - AS, WHERE WHEN reserves will use. It will give calmness in battle. There is no fever and haste at a bad situation enemy attack. There are ready plans (a some - may be 2-3-4) - how to use the reserve and 2nd eshelon.

    Playing Syria - it is necessary to think over attentively AS, WHERE and WHEN the reserve will be used.

The concept Is necessary - that there will be a reserve where it will stand both where and as will use (see Fig2).Certainly, the concept of the Soviet doctrine-is all defence is necessary do as anti-tank defence first of all.     It is necessary to think over places before battle where the enemy will go and prepare death zones. It is necessary to do strengthenings of the position as much as possible, more strongly and more widely. The line a small trench how to do in CMSF scenarios for Syria is a punishment in the Soviet doctrine for any commander (to clean from post command).   2. Here so unexpected

    In 1st mission our player has all tanks together when fighting beginning

    Almost always other scenarios - the most important forces come reinforcements and after the beginning

    We play own mission and mission each other (Alex my scenarios, I play Alex's scenarios) - to have good chance of a victory or draw at least game - if the player carefully amke the plan of battle, work with a card and micro-management. Red not give pardons an error

    The third our comrade does check of last version's - "a free sight"

    To make the "beautiful" cautious and "competent" attack for AI it is difficult - if that was NOT Banzai attack

    It was expected to do scenarios - it is possible to be a victory or a drawn in game

    There are scenarios - at night against blue (where ATGM team you can see on top picture), fight against blue tank-helicopter rush (it is heavy to play even to me - the author), attack by old tanks against blue command (Javelin is available of course )

    Probably we the red compaign is too hard....

  3. Some more good things

    1. To put small recon groups in БРДМ-2 and to do "open-up" mode. It will VERY WELL increase speed of reaction

    2. To make еру "fire corridor" along flank streets from смешания БРДМ-2 + AGS + machineguns. The infantry has only HEAT shells for RPG -7, therefore weak against Chellenzher. To use infantry as supervision, fire in TWIMIK, not at Challengers

    3. To wait while blue 'open' the infantry, to reconnoiter it and to kill by tanks T-72, hiding T-72 from Challengers.

    There is a small chance - to kill blue infantry on any site and inflitred in a green zone. May be big losses of infantry - will 'shake' the blue player.

    4. Tanks T-72 - to break the big buildings in the centre - that was Javelin roftoop positions

    It is better to make

    1. To clean Т-72 from front of the tank Challenger

    Challengerwill beat out from front T-72

    2. If there whant - it is necessary to wait while blue open her infantry - and to beat tanks T-72 blue infantry - in buildings or at open place

    3. Place Т-72 together and behind building cover (when they do not shoot blue infantry) - Т-72 more poorly than Challenger and on an open place there is danger Javelin.

    4. To place AGS and machineguns (and/or BRDM-2) behind cover of a building for fire to flank along street, instead of from front- blue infantry on short distance kick off AGS and machineguns from a roof or from front position

  5. CM Afghanistan is somewhere on the horizon if you really really crave Red campaign play. :D Most (though unfortunately not all) CMSF standalone scenarios are playable either side. So Red side hasn't been entirely ignored. Doing a campaign story told from the Syrian side sounds like its long overdue. The combination of fresh perspective and real-world locations sounds exciting!

    There are two problems - why are not present Red against Blue

    1. In our country (Belarus, Russia) localisation

    was only 1 path for SMSF standard (1-03 )

    There is no patch for SMSF: Marines

    We used the old version of game

    2. The most important reason

    AI does not take Javelin !!!

    They and remain in spool of Bradley or Strycker

    Without Javelin blue has problems even against old Т-55 MBT

    Problem Javelin (there can be who that know as it to do?) for AI is unique important reason - why British (12th Mechanized BDE for example ;) ) is the enemy in our compaign: because IBCT (Airbone or recon BfSB) and British Forces have Javelin groups.

    ....

    So when I went to design a Red vs Blue campaign, I went forward with smallish engagements in mind. A major problem with a Red vs Blue campaign of this sort quickly became apparent however- Red infantry is fragile! Particularly on the attack Its hard to keep a Red infantry core force intact. ....

    So? everyboby whant tanks ;)

    We have practically refused from a CORE unit

    Each fight - have big losses - the blue side is strong enemy, it is impossible to do beatings without losses

    In a real life - each troop can be filled up by the recruit pool or two weak troops connect in one after fight

    In an SMSF it is impossible to do that

  6. About Red Campaign

    Red player have no one BMP-3, T-90, T-72M1V Tums-T and other «super-weapons».

    A some RPG-29, a few AT-14 for special forces, and - almost always the standard for Syrian Army и non-combatant forces (a few level skill increased in most late missions).

    The big note: the blue campaign becomes around of battalion size of force. There are no chances that the Syrian force will have small losses for transition in other battle. Therefore – the size of Syria campaign – different parts from the brigade size forces and is not enough CORE units. On duration of fight – the Syrian party will increase a few skill, to do reorganization (begun forces less, are added other forces for other techniques – it will be a variety and interest).

    Also –now 7 mission basically ready ? total number of missions – approximately 17-18.

    Campaign action on a card:

    Иbegins approximately 15км Seat Al-Qariatayn town , at a crossroads of Road #7 and roads Homs (Hims)-At-Tanf.

    Enemy - a great group moves on Homs and at crossroads area British forces forwarding flanking strikes the southwest lengthways of Road #7 on Al-Qariatayn and further on Dumeira.

    Our Syrian forces - Battle Group of 58th Armor BDE of 7th mechanized division defended in a battle order front at West and has got outflanking.

    The place and action time occurs already after the war beginning, when it became clear that enemy power and the air superiority will not allow to operate mechanized forces in a former, classical order as the Soviet advisers learnt the Syrian generals. Air strikes and disorganization of control system do not promote struggle in large connections.

    Leaning against a wide network of militia, infantry and groups of insurgents (because of which war has begun) a brigade has made decision to pass to tactics of limit and restraint at enemy. Combining flexible defense in strong points, small maneuvers by wide front, active actions guerrilla and special forces in backside of enemy. The weakest soldiers are released from lines, supplied by a communication (radio and phone) and go of spies role. Special Forces, possessing some operational experience in Lebanon intensively conduct preparation of reservists and a militia, non-combatant to guerrilla tactics.Of course, the special Forces are defense basis in night conditions.

    Syrian Forces pool (begin):

    58 Armored BDE:

    Three armored Btns (581th, 582nd, 583rd)– T-55MV and T-55 (1974) Main Battl Tanks –Green Level (rare Regular or Conscript)

    581th MechBtn (BMP-1 4C, AT-4C Spigot)

    Some smaller troops – AT Company (BRDM-2 AT-5 and foot AT-4C), Recon Company (BRDM-2) and other.

    Also have Howitzers D-30 и MLRS GRAD form 7th Arty Rgt, but succession of events and air conditions does not assume that they can render the strong support.

    11th Special Forces Rgt (crack-veteran level)

    Also in vicinities is available: parties of 31th Reserv Inf BDE (Four Inf Btn, one mixed MechBtn –T-72 Early and BTR-60PB) and a few Militia troops. Fire support -82-mm mortars. Main AT weapon – AT-3B Sagger and SPG-9 Recoilless Gun.

    Insurgents are presented by groups of combatants and fighter- terrorists (different skill) and will help usually in towns and outskirts.

    It seems that all world falls and the lovely Syria perishes becoming a victim political gamers and dirty intrigues, but soldiers of 7th mechanized division, 11 SF regiment, reserve infantry and devoted sons of Syria in guerrilla groups should fulfils the duty on peoples protection!

    The player holds each scenario of slightly low infantry, weak AT-3 (is more rare At-4, it is very rare AT-14), and has some old tanks (sometimes has no anything, seldom has much) seldom has special forces, insurgents have weak experience, seldom good. Fire support – is not enough 120-mm, it is not enough 82-mm, is rare GRAD or D-30, constantly support arrives as a reinforcement already after the fight beginning. The blue party almost always is equality or advantage in the field of fight.

    The player will play inconveniently:

    Inconvenient defensive positions (turned into other side then enemy attack , which does not represent in the operating plan a copy to the Syrian staff)

    Unnecessary and weak forces in action (as does not suffice on all necessary Т-72 Turms or AT-14 Cornet, but available there is weak reserve infantry, HMGs DShK and old tanks)

    Late and arriving reserves not where it is convenient ( control system of Syrians and so not clearness, glitches after aviation indirections and radio-electronic suppression)

  7. I played this scenario against the human - for red side

    This is not present balance

    1. Reserve red infantry has no T-HEAT rocket, there is no chance to kill any blue tank.

    2. The red party has no off-map, and blue has off-map 81-mm mortatrs

    3. Three tanks T-72M 2001 cannot kill blue tank (the blue tank can) on front. If blue-side player not the idiot, it plase her tanksbetween houses - to close side from fire.

    4. Blue has Javelin, red is not present

    5. Red AGS has no advantage - a distance here very small

    red can go and shoot a little bit by tank on buildings - there will not arrive yet the blue tank or will not be Javelin launched.

    However in a film is action of a machine gun of 12,7 or 14,5 mm - in the best

    But not ZU-23-2, It has 190 grammes warhead a shell and speed of shooting from 2 barrel 2000 shots in a minute - anything similar is not present in a film

    For 15 seconds - when soldiers jumped from cars - ZU-23-2 has had time to shoot approximately 500 cartridges - a usual stock, Hadji could run without waiting the helicopter

    The sight ZAP - 23 - has 3,5 X increase - does not allow a problem to get to a jeep if certainly in general you are able to shoot

  10. I wish to ask one question on the future game on the engine of СМ2

    I do not know - discussed here such question, therefore I set here.

    Why not to make game not on the basis of Normandy - and on the basis of fight on Pacific ocean - New Guinea, Burma, Pilipinas and so on.

    I have seen recently two excellent films -

    "Letters from Iwo Jima" and "Flags of Our Fathers".

    Mine opinion- engine CM2 very well would be made for such small arms battles in jungle, mountains, beaches. The sample for the massed battles in Europe with participation of many tanks and an infantry in great number (after all such big scenarios as Cry Havoc, Guardian far Flank not so quickly go by average computers on SMSF engine).

    The TOE for the countries very much - the USA, China, Japan, Great Britain and etc, is a lot of technics and arms for each party. Besides as a matter of fact - war on Pacific ocean theatre is no math realised in games.

    Why FM-manual and other stories about Javelin it is made in game precisely - really 30 seconds or less for deployment and a shot in game

    But why Russian FM about AT-4, SPG-9 and another (they are made with the same purpose as FM about Djavelin for US Army)-consider an idealist?

    You consider that the Soviet command in training deceived the soldiers?

  12. Well that is pretty conclusive :) How about 30 seconds set up time for an 'Elite' team and make lower experience teams take a longer time?

    My opinion - you very much do not wish to believe a thing-

    SOVIET цwapon very simple, SPG-9 is very simple too.

    I remembe, that samebody wtote about bad training of tipycal SOVIET soldier - some months earlier,

    And you write now that the standard specification of the Soviet soldiers - is for elite soldier.

    More likely me ELITE will make deployment even faster-15-20 sec approximately. Or can be - to make the standard specification DJjavelin deployment 20-25 sec - only for elite skill ?

    As I wish to say- that weight AT-4 Spigot - together with a rocket-~35 kg (Djavelin - AFAIK 22-23 kg). The usual soldier can take AT-4 Spigot and to run a little distanse whithout puck up - especially to consider that Syria has no much men-portaible equipment in game as the Blue Team.

    There is a specific material for a covering of tanks, armored cars and AD-system

    As there is some material for a covering of the infantryman in position to "lay"

    Modern models termosight are very perfect

    The basic way for masking is

    1) the Finding in the closed district - wood, houses. A smoke screen

    2) the Finding among "hot" objects (some kind of aircraft) - for an example the person among mountain stones in the hot afternoon

    3) Use of radiation IR of a range for the big areas -When one tank among many "hot furnace"

    The basis termosight has distinction of temperatures between different things. Therefore there is no big effect (an exception-very big hot objects at aircraft - for an example, tanks in the middle of a field) in the afternoon, but there is a value at night - when the nature cools down

    You showed that some ATGM posts have night vision. That, as far as I can tell, is in the game as well.

    Why do you think that these things are not in game?

    Only ATGM AT-4 and AT-14 have night sight

    For example AT-7 and AT-13 (Russian Metis and Metis-M) have no night sight in the screen of inventory

    Implicitly possibility of night sight can be made, but I could not see situation Abrams tanks on a distance of 850 metres in a current 5 min

    Who that thinks so

    The red soldier cannot learn well for two years of constant service for regular experience, but the blue NGman can have 100 days of service in year, 2-3 months for training and to be ready as Regular

    The blue NGman was going to Iraq and trained a few months in Fort Ivin before, but the red soldier before the big war will not train - will sit under a palm-tree

    Everyone will have the own opinion

    I we have some memoirs of Russian instructors for Arabs - you spoke as "It losers for the justification of the errors" write!

    We have Russian textbooks with instructions of some figures (Artillery, for an example) - you spoke as "Sirian army is not Russian army"!

    We have the Russian description of the weapon (ATGM or tanks, for an example)-you spoke as "Our military guys in the USA were to analyze it - they have told it SCRAP"

    Really we have no source in the Syrian Genaral Staff! And anybody from us did not serve in the Syrian Army (((

    What we can give representation (the description, the document) that you spoke that it is the specific document for apple and apple comparison?

  17. As far as National Guard units go, with the amount of "usage" they seeing these days on the front lines, I would rate them as most often "Regular" in the game. As I found out soon after reporting to my NG unit, gone are the days where the troops just sit around on drill weekends doing nothing much. At least in my unit (an armor battalion) we were out in the field (Fort Irwin) nearly every month training, and almost always our drill weekends started on Thursday evening, not Saturday morning, thus allowing for more training time. Our battalion commander was big on making sure we were a combat-ready unit.

    Fort Irwin - is the training centre?

    Is not present unitsfor NG or Army it is constant. All units go at Fort Irwin there for some time. Really train very intensively. Then leave home. Rate of trainiges is not enough at the house. I agree - that readiness after Fort Irwin good. Therefore 20-Vet, 40-Reg, 40-Green for . NG usually there are no trainings constantly such intensively. And also speed to take new level it is a little when fast training on Fort Irwin less than at typical Army.
