  1. Ok here goes. When I first posted in the "water cooler" section of the Battlefront forum I was trying to give a little heads up about my favorite sims' evolution because I know there are a few members here that own some version of Pro PE. I was admonished about what was considered a commercial link in my sig and Redwolf gave me a quick pointer.

It would have been better style to give us some content here. Just a paragraph about what ssnake put in, that kind of thing.

Then people can google the sucker if you got them interested.

So, after consideration I addressed the idea and just gave a little brief on what was new. I then posted some screens of a new model for the 2A4 and another screen of 2A6's (Leoparde2E) in a limited environment - visibility was reduced to 500 meters with a foggy sky texture, all of which can be set up in the mission editor - Maybe I should have just said Leopardo2E in the screens heading but I'm passionate about the sim.

So Moon gets pissed at me and Redwolf comes back with this response after Moon's.

Can I make a joke that ShiftZ marketing is worse than BFCs? :D

This is a wargaming forum with mostly no previous exposure to Steel Beats, at least the target audience for the post. Giving us a copy'n'paste of new features when the audience has no reference to the old state of affairs is going to be doing as few good as bombarding people with uncommented screenshots that have no relevance to gameplay.

Gents I'm not bashing Battlefronts stuff or making any claims about whats better or whatever. I personally can't wait for BF to go back to WW2 because I will most definitely be purchasing "Normandy" I won't however go into great detail about Pro PE here because it's a waste of type and there is another whole forum dedicated especially for eSims' products. eSim could always do a number of things better for us the consumer but it's target audience is the military customer so anything we get is trickle down. I'm pretty sure that when steel beasts 2 is released it will make game players of this genera happy. Salute guys.

Well that was what my link was intended to do, this is a Battlefront fourm after all and my intention was not to take away from BF's sims, just to let those who may be intrested know that the latest version was available. So here goes then, a little brief on the up grade. Hopefully Moon dosen't take my head off.

For those of you familiar with Steel Beasts no formal introduction is necessary. For those unfamiliar, Steel Beasts Professional PE is a virtual simulation of contemporary armored and mechanized combat, focusing on small-unit tactics.

New unit additions for version 2.460 include:

    The Leopardo2E MBT

    CV9035DK PC

    Technical(SUV) w/ 106mm Recoilless Rifle

    Technical(SUV) w/ 14.5mm HMG

    2S6 Tunguska air defence vehicle

    RBS70 dismounted air defence missle

    MT-LB-FO forward artillary observer vehicle

    Centauro 105mm gun system

    Pizarro IFV

    NH-90 Helicopter

UAV capable of laser designation of targets for support purposes

New features include "time of day" added to the mission editor. An air strike option for 2 x 500lb bombs. Sky textures that can now be swapped out to suit the scenario in the mission editor. Suppresive fire command added to unit context menus. Matrox TripleHead2Go multi-screen is also now supported.

There are to many features and extras for me to list here without this thread becoming offesive. For more info google steelbeasts and go from there.

  4. G B Scurlock;

The demo is running nice on my rig. Specs are:

    dual core 2.2ghz

    nvidia 7950go pci

Latest driver update on the card. You should be able to get something like this for a modest investment.

  5. something about it just doesn't feel quite realistic enough

Ok here's what you do. Sign up with the armed services of your country. Get posted to a hot zone where real people are involved in real combat and where you can be really killed. That should fill out your "realistic enough" desire.

  6. Please provide us with some authoritative evidence which substantiates your claim that one of these vehicles is capable of firing 10+ rounds per minute from it's main gun. I will not quible as to the environment. A practice range is fine, Grafenwoehr, wherever. Please, just throw us all a link.

    PoE

I'm going to post a link to a YouTube clip. It's a two parter but the first part shows average load time for two quick rounds. The only reason the gunner isn't firing faster is because the targets are getting dead.

  7. I understand what Sneaksie is saying about the TOW2 engine. Every single blade of grass is modeled and therefore has to be constantly updated during game play because the enviroment is fully interactive. However a slight ballooning of the map would be benificial to the game rather then determental. Perhaps a reduction in ground cover math might help.

In SteelBeasts Pro Personal Edition there are some massive maps but you can only select a specific size to a maximum but you are allowed to do this on any point on said map. Maybe that should be the approach 1C should take with thier maps.

Make let's say five to ten maps but make them big maps. Then allow the player to select to a given size limit from any point on the maps. A small reduction in enviromental interaction may make for a big gain in map size and FPS gains too.

I for one don't pay to much attention to trees, rocks or what have you when someone is trying to put thier steel on my target.

  8. I think that for the era of the game a 2 kilometer square map is fine. I mean the best tank gun is the german 88 ffs. Compared to the L55 120 mm on the Leo2A6's the 88 is a pos. I find that firing direct to 4000 meters + with a sabot round on a 2k map a little tight but with 70 year old equipment it fits nice. It's all about scale. Platoon sized battles don't need anymore then 6k at the mordern level so for a ww2 game it sits well. Do people want to take three hours just to find the opfor?? 40k, man it would take days to mix it up in multiplayer. I'm used to playing SB Pro PE and big maps suck in multiplayer for that sim and I do believe that both TOW and TOW2 are at the same scale, no more then the company level.

Something to do with Vista as well as the dongle. Pretty irritating considering I paid $100 for the game. From what I've read from Nils, it sounds like compatibility with Vista isn't going to happen. So I guess I bought a $100 mini-frisbee + dongel.

Jeff here is a link to the forums over at SB. Your vista problems and many others who run that OS have been looked at in great detail.

Nice information on the Teflon thing btw. I ask because a friend of mine -who used to be in the Canadian Militia- told me about Israeli tanks knocking out Syrian tanks. It would appear that one T-62 was taken out with a Teflon round. The penetrator caught the side of the gun but instead of deflecting off of the target it “stuck” to the gun tube and continued on down slightly boring into the tube before penetrating the mantlet. One naturally assumes Teflon to provide a slippery heat resistant surface but it would seem that at high velocities these same qualities are to be reversed
