well see in 10 years how much are still playing TOW, and how many armies in the world use irt to train their officers... </font>Originally posted by seppDieter:</font><blockquote>quote:</font><hr />Originally posted by chanss:

Thanks to both of you. It's doable, you need just some luck. In fact didn't have find time to play it last days but I will try today after I've done some work so that I don't feel any guilty playing the game

Something is FUBAR in that mission. I already told many times that my 3 tanks were shooting French H35 in turret and you could count 10 hits visible and nothing. Like that H35 was JS-2 in fact.Originally posted by Valgua:Hi! I'm getting a little bit frustraded with the Dunkirk map (German campaign). Can someone give some tips to destroy the AT guns without losing all my tanks?
BTW, I really hope BFC will change the LOS values. A tank of mine was destroyed by an AT gun shooting from 1.000 m through tree rows of trees... (I checked with 1st person view, my tank was not exposed).

Yes, take it easy

My take is yes... The map is really big and if all goes into RAM hmmmm you get it...Originally posted by FanzerPaust:I can run faces of war on my computer with no problem.
not even when it gets very busy on the field its still running very good.
Now my question is.
Is TOW so much more heavy as a game then FOW?

Thanks for your view it is more than welcome on this forum!Originally posted by Sneaksie:There is quite a uproar about Russian patch - it was said to be released after BF release (due to agreement with BF it could not been released earlier), but now they hold it until new enhanced edition which includes it will be printed and put on sale (probably middle May). Only then the patch said to be released for free downloading (300mb and 500mb versions, bigger includes enhanced sound). We in Russian community are really pissed off because all we have now is beta patch with only german campaign functional and it's version is significantly earlier than BF release. Even by patch size it can be assumed it changes very much, but considering your posts game still has very large room for improvement, esp. spotting issues.
What better than 10 marketing guys at the bottom of the sea? 100 marketing guys at the bottom of the sea.
I hope as you do that they will make everything humanly possible

Some nice observation Sneaksie. You followed developmentOriginally posted by Sneaksie:Missions are unbalanced because there were made long ago, when TOW had unrealistic engagement ranges (tank guns could fire no more than for several hundred meters, etc.). Then by popular demand they removed these restrictions and saw what happened. They said that everything went okay, and for last patch missions where even redesigned, but i didn't see changes from 1.0 version (this version had realistic ranges olready, but there were a number of damage related bugs). I think that all missions must be redone from scratch, especially missions like Dunkirk. I doubt it would be done though as its a lot of work.
What i'm 100% sure, it's that if good modder team would do a campaign it's would be 100000 times better than originals which are only poor demonstrations of what can be done with current state of engine.
BTW, what is the difference between Russian version and this version and did 1C patch Russian version to BF.com version?
Obviously they could write a novel about making of this game.

Bioseed well done.
I will just copy and paste this to Usenet so that those guys see for themselves that this is not Red Alert as almost they think it is.

Well, I am big fan od Close Combat as well. I played Close Combat 3 to death... still remember sweat at Stalingrad mission when my PZIVF2 played a game mouse and cat with that T-34...
Close Combat is a classic game.
But, why I applaud ToW developers? I applaud them because they made a NEW game.
I don't mind remakes in fact I also applaud that (not on this price but that's another topic). I also think that Panzer General 2 would be great remake.
But people, we also need new game, new designs. That's why I will give some more time to ToW.
There is room for all those games. I would prefer that Close Combat: CoI cost 20-30 $ because I know that developing a game like Theatre of War cost much, much money! We cannot forget that.
See, yes it is developed in Russia and maybe there programmers are happy if they have 1000 euros salary don't know but anyway ANY game with THIS graphics is not easy or cheap to make. Be it anywhere on the planet. That's why I don't get this comparision between CoI and ToW. Then make Matrix make the game like this for you
But I doubt that they can. Maybe but it will cost them a lot money to make it. So in fact Battlefront.com have really took premiere position in wargaming now. They are now leading and that is a fact. This is big caliber of a game and if market recognize it in big numbers then Battlefront.com have made it's goal.
That is the potential of ToW. That's why I will forgive some things for now to the ToW. They were brave (developers) and I respect that.

Patience, you must have patience in this game.Originally posted by OES95:Well what happened to me is that all my tanks got disabled from the counter attacking tankettes, and the last two 75mm guns that were in the town
Oh yeh and my infantry was being massacred cause I did banzai charge up hills
Slowly move your tanks in line. x x x x so all are in front and use maximum fire power.
Infantry is behind.
Then when you see one AT gun concentrate ALL fire of ALL tanks on that one gun. I made to the trenches without single tank lost. Support is very important in this game so you have to watch that some tank don't get too much ahead because it's bye bye to him then.
It's a matter of luck as well I think.
Oops I am talking about the tactics and I suck at playing ToW Well, in one or more month I will also be better.

So, who is this game supposed to be for? What's the market?.
------
But, please look at competition. Matrix Games is recycling old code from 1997. and then slap price of 40$ on that. Here you have brand new game with awesome graphics and gameplay is also good for a decent price. Eventually some issues will be solved and some things improved.
The game was never intented to be HARDCORE WARGAME.
It comes from makers of FLIGHT SIMULATIONS. Like Il -2.... Sometime long time ago in far away galaxy when there was C-64 and MicroProse, flight simulation were even mainstream games believe it or not.
So this game is not so realistic but naturally it shoots for wider market. If they did totally hardcore wargame they will shoot itself in the foot. As it have gorgeus graphics many graphic whores and RTS kiddies will want it as well. And mainstream crowd that plays Total War will want it as well. But real hardcore wargamers don't care so much for graphics and in any case are not targeted
as a market.
But game is casual in it's style and hardcore wargamers might like it if they like good games and don't play exclusively TOAW and Combat Mission or some other game.
I like all good games so that's why I have bought it. I am wargamer but like all good designs.

Real men grow big moustaches, swear in public, drink very much and don't use mission editor!Originally posted by chanss:(english is not my motherlanguage)
First campaign I play is the german one, and 2 of the early missions is very difficult even on the easiest setting, even had to use the mission editor to get rid off the 4 T34:s that are totaly impossible to handle with the forces at hand as German. the missions after that are much better balanced and fun to play, although i have only tried them on easiest setting. I wish the developers had spent some more time with mission balancing, they would have gotten a much more favorable opinion of the players. I believe many of the negative posts here has come because of the insane difficulty of some of the missions, players get frustrated and start complaining of this and that.
I recomend any player that are frustrated to use the mission editor, it lets you get the campaigns to a sane level in balancing the forces.
Except for the balancing issues the game IS BLEEDING GREAT!

What? It is really easy... use your tanks to eliminate AT guns, use arty to soften infantry or at guns and then destroy those "tanks"...Originally posted by OES95:Now if only I could win one stinking mission! I have lost against the bleeding polish!
I use tanks in line formation x x x x
maybe I will play it again - maybe I can play it to not lose anything I think that it is possible.
also you can use those polish AT guns against them. maybe there is more, someone else will give you some tips...
Dunkirk on the other hand is pain but I didn't have too much time to play it. And I also still suck at Theatre of War hehe. I am sure that already many players here are really good at playing. I will play it slowly.

I know what you are talking!Originally posted by v_Manstein:well im the last one that complains about anything, especially if i waited for a game for about 4 years. but as excited i was when tow was FINALLY released, as disappointed i am after playing several missions.
i started close combat 3 - just to get sure i didnt lose the appetite on games in general - but cc3 is just perfectly balanced, has a logical makeup and in the end its just fun playing.
so i am very sad to have to tell you that tow was already uninstalled after only 3 days. my hardcopy will do its work as dust catcher perfectly i guess.
:'(
This evening I started Close Combat 3 and when I saw those pixel as big as thumbs I ran away for cover!
Then I happily clicked on ToW.exe and magically here I am in XXI century.

I have seen nice feature in Dunkirk mission which suggests that AI is not so dumb.Originally posted by Rollstoy:I will try to keep my 'fanboy posts' to a minimum, but, honestly, you think that this game is worse than CC?!?!!??!?!? Are you kidding me?!
Here, we have:
* cool AI attacks (maybe scripted, so what?!)
* for my taste a perfect 3D world
* incredible possibilities to interact with the soldiers
* a much better penetration model than CC (or not?)
My only critisims at this time is that the missions appear to be a little bit unfair.
I just think that you need to put the negative thoughts aside and play the demo for 2 hours to get used to everything. I did, and I think this is the best WW II game I played so far!
Now our input is important to make it even better, get us maps with more cover, city fighting, etc.
Remember, the alternative is a dozen more 'Panzers' clones.
Best regards,
Thomm
French tank H35 come over the hill and crushed my pawn under it's tracks that I sent to recce mission.
I ordered 3 tanks (or more) to attack it's turret but I couldn't penetrate it. And guess what? H35 fet that situation got tricky and he withdrew back...
Yes, maybe that is not novelty and maybe in some other games AI could react like that but anyway it was cool seeing that that bastard choose to withdraw.

Thank you Madmatt. I really don't blame anyone and in fact it's not so big problem.Originally posted by Madmatt:Bloodstar44,
Although the others might pick fun at you, but I understand the situation. The game locked up, forcing you to hard reset which apparently affected Mozilla.
We are working with 1C to get to the root of the lockups some people are experiencing, and that will hopefully minimize such "chain-reactions" as what you encountered.
I am sorry that your game crash caused you such a problem.

Did I said that CAUSE of the hard reset was game that is in beta and this CAUSED this. My PC worked perfectly well until this.
So instead of pretending that you are smart next time read a bit more careful. Very funny indeed.
That BUG caused this! It happened AFTER that BUG not DAY AFTER!!!

I will try to install again Mozilla. I think that that hard reset was the reason for this. But, I couldn't shut the process on alt-ctr-del so I had to shut down PC. So maybe ToW don't affect mozilla but it's beta state have caused this problem.Originally posted by Moon:Not sure what you mean? I have Firefox as well and no problems. There is nothing in TOW which would affect your browser. Maybe Firefox is downloading some updates?

But Ok I hope that I will manage to restore this to working condition I hate to see every time I turn on PC that it churn out Mozilla browser and start it only 3 minutes later. Insane.

So, I was playing Dunkirk scenario and had lock up and soft reset didn't worked. I had to turn off my PC (I don't have hard reset on this Sharkoon case, I know stupid...) and from that time (pc checked the hard drive) when I first time start mozilla browser THEN I MUST WAIT 3-4 MINUTES to open browser!!!
This is BTW. really excellent. And this is because of this bug. Really great! ((((
Just wanting to kick someone in the teeth because of this.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I never saw 5 38ts. You might have the 35ts mixed up, cause there area few of those but their armor is only 30mm.Originally posted by wokelly:</font><blockquote>quote:</font><hr />Isn't it better to take 5 38 and 1 PzJgd? Instead of those 4c due to crappy stats of 4c?
Plus the 4C has the best AT gun, maybe not at 100m but beyond due to the mass of the shell it keeps velocity better. Actually in a sick way the 4C is the best AT gun you have. Given how much dispersion it had in real life it really should not be the case. WWIIOL shows that, might be the most powerful 1940 weapon on a german tank, but its so inaccurate, but in game you'd never guess. </font>
Comparison to Close Combat
in Theatre of War
Posted
I think the brutal truth is that Matrix priced it exactly the same way Battlefront priced ToW; the price which they estimate would make the most money. In their judgement, which I suspect was right, they could have cut the price by 25% but only gained 10% more sales. I'm guessing the figures, of course, but I doubt they are far off.
*************
Well, I am just stating that I didn't see 1C spreading some mantra that we must buy I don't know Il-2 because they need money to develop Theatre of War. We see that they worked on a game and delivered the game - OK there are really some problems but let's imagine for a moment that they will be settled. And I don't think that game development in Russia regarding financing is better than regarding financing in USA or UK. Only workforce is cheaper. I still think that it's a rip off and of course would use what your countrymen Joe Strummer once said "I vote with my dollar" (he said that for boycotting McDonalds but anyway good in this case as well.
********
As to graphics, they have actually been perked up a little but beyond that I'm not really sure what they could do. CC is rooted in 2D, and within that I'm not really sure what improvements you could have. A new graphics engine would have made the whole project totally unviable. I think you need to look at the aims of the project too, which were;
*********
I don't mind this old graphics - because I know that they would in fact maybe mess up gameplay if they opted to upgrade graphics or maybe not. Point is that they used exactly 0$ for graphics, took some mods and wham here is a new game for 40$. I can guarantee to you that many gamers will just pass this up, they are not so naive as it seems.
**********
1. To make some money, not least to finance the development of CC6.
**********
I see. That is a new trend? Customers act like a bank, venture capitalist, rich daddy?
Well sorry but I don't buy that.
*********
2. To provide an updated version (with more than a few tweaks under the hood) for fans of the series.
*********
At least something but again not worth 40$.
********
3. To make CC3 available to those who never played it first time around (of 2 to 5, CC3 is by far the most difficult to get hold of)
********
Yes, Pedro from Mexico City is crazy about CC.
They had fans of Close Combat as targeted customers but browse some forums. You will see that it is truth that many are not so very enthusiastic about this price. Hint: Wargamer.com etc...
************
To new players CoI is well worth the money, IMHO. For existing CC3 owners there is no compulsion to buy it.
************
When new players see this 1997. graphics they will ask for a 10$ rebate coupon.
***********
haven't we had this conversation before, somewhere?
***********
Yes, we had, hehe. But, I guess that some things need to be said here. Don't know why you so much defend Matrix when from Mars is visible that they made an error... And that is really a rip off of fans. Nothing else. You may use pretty words but that is reality.
We just need fair pricing system. Europa Universalis 3 is new game, with new engine and price on Paradox site is 40$. Think about it, Hertson.
