Thats part of what has already been posted here. The way the buildings were engineered and built allowed them to take horrendous punishment and remain standing. The design wasn't on purpose as the city was built years before the battle ever occured even before the war started, the design was for ease of construction by highly unskilled labor. The communist liked to keep idle hands busy, that way they didn't have time to plot their own new governments.

The Germans tried everything they could to pulverize the city. If you read the engineering text about the seige you will find that most archetects can't believe that much ordinance was used and that much of the city still intact. Matter of fact, you can go to the city now and in the older parts still see where they just rebricked the holes and were done.

Concrete and Steel compliment each other tremendously. They even have some original areas still standing. After over 60 years and riddled with holes, these structures still stand. Entire floors blown out of them, yet they still stand supported by the exterior walls.

Their own construction allowed them to hold on to constant cover and concealment.

  2. You know, the more i think about the reverse slope bug..... i don't consider it much of a bug.

If you take into context that it could be used to simulate "well dug in" positions where the AT gun is supposed to sit somewhere with a limited kill arc with lots of dirt work around it.... then it makes the "bug" add some realism. As intense trenchwork would offer the gun team protection they otherwise would not have.

I understand the game has trenches.... but just a different view.

  3. Jason, i'm kinda new. But i've played AI enough to know sorta what your talking about (i understand fundamentally).

However, i've parked guns behind crests and they still got killed quite effectively. The problem with doing that is that i've never been able to drop a gun behind a crest and still have a relatively decent LOS.

Is the problem you referencing created by someone taking 4 hours to place the piece so that it appears to be at the top of the crest but the game engine see's it as 1 meter below???

Apologies, i understand what you folks are talking about, but lost at the same time. Maybe email me a setup so i can see what you are talking about? I'd rather not get into a PBEM and get whacked due to a bug in game.

  4. Mikey, i'd a thought they would have worked like a mortar.

In so far as game mechanics are concerned, why not? I spent 3 out of 6 battles running those dam things to all types of HQ units to try and get indirect fire support out of them, then finally gave up and drove them up to the front and leveled the village and pounded the crap out of everything in my way. I had so many of them they even took out a panther by immobilizing and the crew bailed.

  5. Well, i've seen mortars set up and shots departed in a minute or so. Other than the moving parts, a gun is a gun. Some may take more manpower and a little extra time, however with properly trained crew, minutes should be on target.

I had a FO a few nights ago, he had 120 rounds of 105 HE got himself killed. All 120 rnds fell on my poor fellas heads....... what a catastrophe.

  6. It's what i did Blitz. I just wasn't sure if i was missing how to utilize a piece of the game. I was playing "Italian Countryside" operation. I had as many M7 Priests as i did Shermans. It was an interesting operation, but keeping your armor rolled up with your grunts made it to easy to overcome stiff infantry opposition.

I think i had about 15 Priests by the end.

  7. Is it possible to use the M7 Priest as indirect fire artillery with a spotter?? Dang if i have figured out how, if possible.

It seems to be a infantry killer in the game, not something i can sit back and pound areas with. I thought the M7 was often used as support Artillery, not roll up to the front line grunts while the TC yells down "Where are the Nat-zees?" *as he spits his chewing tobacco*

Thats pretty much what you want do, suppress the firer with HE throwers and move in. When you move in don't just charge the position, move to better firing postions and covered postions as well (it's not easy,I know).

    At first it's a pain, but getting used to setting covered arcs is essential for better play. You can save some wrist work by double clicking on the relevent HQ unit and then adjusting individually. Some general values I use;

    Reserve,manuever,ambush and tank hunters - 25m

    Overwatch or defensive - 100m to 200m

Advancing or SMG squad - 50m to 100m

Finally, the AI tends to cluster, use it too your advantage, and versus the computer don't be afraid to experiment.

    Have fun.

    Thank you

@ Joe, i've seen your email.... I'm gettin to it. Apologies.

  9. An increase in military spending in my opionion is likely from booming operations in their country. Costs of everything is on the rise world wide. Steel, Energy, Zinc, all the natural resources are outpacing budgets. Large armies require large budgets to keep them fit and operational.

Then you add recent events like North Korea stirring their punch bowl as well. China can't afford to have their greatest source of export cut off. I know they moved a heap of folks to the North Korea border saying "they fear refugees" in the event of anything happening. I saw this in a different light, i saw it as a statement of "Kim, we're sick of your @#$@". Notice how NK has calmed down and is now sending cakes and invitations to everyone with the old "lets chat" routine.

Don't forget, they must eat too, is the cost of food up?

I think increases in budgets and spending is related to their regional crisis areas and cost of goods across the board.

  10. I believe the driver is looking through that little slit between man on the main gun and the fellow holding his rifle so as to guarentee himself a move off the frontline.

I also believe you can see the tank commander holding perhaps some radio ear phones or some sort of ear protection in the center top basically between the 2 individuals at the front of the tank i am describing. I believe the TC is wearing a cap and has a man on each side of him without their covers on, or so it appears to me.

  11. Well vs the AI last night in a CMAK operation i routed a german MG nest with the following.

    1 Spotter for mortar team

    1 60mm Mortar

2 Squads - indirect fire for 1 with no movement and an advance command with 20 second pause on the other (i let the AI determine fire) MG was aprox 120M - 160M away or so once i found him.

I am playing americans in italy around 43 i think. The one at the Gustav line.

Do you folks think i did ok? It seemed conservative to me. I've been trying to stop the AI overkill of firepower, and i'm finding it near impossible.

    1. if you have that many units (3-4 platoons) even if they are green units, attacking a lone hmg nest should be a cakewalk. first have one platoon lay area fire (not target fire) at the nest, while the other two actually target the hgm itself. then have the first platoon assault the nest after a delay of about 20-30 seconds depending if you can tell the experince of the hmg crew. the higher the exp, the more fire you have to pour on them before they get pinned.

    2. another less heart pounding way to defeat a hgm, is to just have your hq unit los the nest for a mortar team. takes a while but alot less stressing and youll lose less men.

Platoon or squad???? You have me a little baffled.

The extra weight all up front might marginally effect the steering, but would not appreciably effect flotation or typical speed etc.

Jason, are you talking about the 728 lbs listed on the picture? If so i fully agree with you. This is of no significance, especially when you consider that if a few infantrymen gather on top of the deck you've got way over that. Say each man weighs in at 225 or more complete with gear, it's like adding riding 3 guys on the tank.
  14. LOL, you may lose again. Just take your time. Also, do you turn off the trees? I do to see the results. You can rewatch it with the trees and stuff for eye candy. Right now, i find myself leaning around looking at the monitor. LOL

    Newb helping newb. LOL

If you get mauled, i'll start it and show you my opening maybe email you the save file if i can find it so you can see what i did. I don't know, just a plan.

  15. Night, forget about tank battles for a bit. Look for infantry matches with small armor engagements. This will likely help you far more.

Play "A battle of minors", play the germans. you will be on the defense. You will have tanks come into the game later on. I lose the left side of the map quite a bit. However, i usually finish with a draw or better.

This one and the other one are the 2 i played the most to learn what was going on with a few things.
