  1. If the flexibility of youth is an advantage then why isnt there lots of 16 year old male gymnasts?

    because male gymnastics requires strength

Why, given their population do India do so nadly in the medals tables?

    because they don't give a sh*t?

I dunno, ..., f'instance IIUC in boxing although the judgement is subjective there is an underlying objective fact. Whereas gymnastic 'execution' or 'artistic interpretation' seem to me to be entirely subjective.

they don't have artistic scores anymore it is based on underlying objectivity.. but its hardly understood by the average spectator. execution deductions are based on deviation from a objective perfect form.. -0.1 feet not together in pike position.. etc

Its one thing to argue that "We wuz robbed" coz the ball did/didnt cross the line but such debate is meaningless in gymnastics, ice dancing etc

    in ice dancing who cares?

  2. I'm sure these are both the same sport.

Other sports which need getting rid of are any which are decided by judges.IE most gymnastic events. If you can't decide a sport by who finished First, got the highest, longest, furthest or most points ETC then they should go.

Synchronised swimming what that all about?

What happened in the 4X100 relay. Can't they even pass a baton to each other. For gods sake. That was embarrassing.

the subjective sports exist nowhere else (in the MSM) so I give them a pass because people like watching them... including the appalling ice dancing at the winter olympics

  3. oooh, ..., population/gdp/overfingies adjusted medal tables

    http://c4news.com/livepages/olympics2008/c4/olympicsResults.html

If its being argue that Phelps' tally is/isnt falsely inflated by the breakdown of the the events within swimming then surely the fact that he didnt compete in all the strokes matters.

Personally I think theres too many variants in the velodrome.

I've really enjoyed the swimming marathons with their epic finishes & tales of courage, amputation & cancer plus the in-built argy-bargy of the event.

I've also enjoyed the beach volleyball despite the adjacent game of musical chairs, ..., never realised it was an Olympic sport.

I hear that London is talking of the 4 X 3 fingered dagger relay, the 24 hour surveillance on a closed circuit & instead of a 20km walk a 4 hour standing still coz of traffic

the marathon swim was a proper race...

the phelps equation for different strokes in on another page. it does no equate to zero gold medals

there is no track cycling event "riding with your eyes closed" or "riding backwards 4000m pursuit" or "riding no handed sprint" thou there appears to be too many sprint races for the men or too few for the women... track cycling was reduced this time round to make space for BMX which is all well and good

the medley relay in the pool is absolutely bollocks.

sports that are crap completely or have major problems

softball or baseball not both (apparently softball is going)

taekwondo..rubbish get rid of it.. complete waste of time should never have been a olympic sport

    the walk events... absurd..

    tennis

    horse dressage events?

a lot of sailing classes.. baffling sport... .. needs explaining more I need to be convinced.

  4. Mate, you really are in dreamland. It's as regular as clockwork. England loses and the press bangs on about what whineing bad sports we are. England wins and the press bangs on about what whineing bad sports we are. You win a match and you all pile into an open-topped bus and close Trafalgar Square. That, my friend, is an inferiority complex.

I'm still waiting to actually show me some of this so-called bitterness in the Australian press. As opposed to the British press and columnists beating it up in some sort of circle jerk.

thats because you ARE bad sports...

check it out heres a quote...

you do it so naturally you don't notice!

  5. It seems to me the inferiority complex (in sport) is not on our side.

which is why sections of the aussie press encouraged 'stralians to make noise outside the england rugby squad's hotel at night too stop them sleeping prior to the rugby world cup final..

the jibing and WHINGING started AGAIN on the aussie side of the court this time round

you lot down there are such a load whineing bad sports it takes the fffffffffffffinnnnnnnnggggg biscuit to try and throw that label back into our court

  8. WAHAHAHHAHAHHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

20 years from now not one punk is gonna remember who won the 2008 Superbowl, World Series, Stanely Cup or any other thing...but they sure will remember seeing the dude win number 8. Say what you want but he did it and he did it with all the drama and greatness one could've hoped for. He did his sport and athletics honor. One of the greatest moments I have ever seen in sports.

    Mord.

if he comes to london in 2012 and wins another bundle then he moves up the food chain.. he will be 27 not impossible

he is a great swimmer certainly the greatest olympic swimmer..

  9. Blackhorse,

Strangely enough there is a school of thought here that goes that Saakashvili triggered the war precisely so that afterwards, the West would have no choice but to let Georgia into NATO. We'll see, but my opinion even Saakashvili isn't nuts enough to trade Russian occupation of about 1/3 of his country (if you count Abkhazia and Ossetia) for a ticket into NATO. Me, I think it's more likely Saakashvili just thought his US-trained army would make short work of the Ossetians and the Russian peacekeepers, and like I said that kind of logic is stupid, but not beyond Saakashvili. Only a fool assumes you can dig motivated Russian infantry out of their holes with some area artillery barrages, but basically, this is what I think Saakashvili did.

    re?

    excellent insider posting Bigduke

    a few thoughts..

if the airstrike on the tunnel had succeeded would the "plan" have worked or at least have had a chance

or was te georgian army incapable of fulfilling any mission?

could the russians have responded with a black sea coast landing and airborne troops alone or was the mech-inf division the big stick needed to break georgian resistance?

what level of knowledge/backing/sanction did the US give/have beforehand?

there seems some confusion on that point

  10. Two question for those who don't think Phelps is the greatest Olympian ever:

    1. Who do you think is?

    2. Why?

    greatest? wouldn't like to say

    better (so far)

    carl lewis was better

    cross disciplines

    multiple olympics

harder events requiring more focus in the longevity stakes... 1984-1996 4 olympics

    Steve Redgrave

six olympics ... 6 events ie only one shot in each

5 golds one bronze.. no one has done that in an endurance olympic sport

    mike johnson

still standing world records ... only man to defend 400m, sprint

  11. Saakashvili has 4 or 5 years left to run on his term and his party controls the legislature, so impeachment isn't in the cards short term. Maybe if the economy goes to heck in a handbasket the opposition might gain some steam, but it's really looking the US is going to turn on the aid hose full pressure, and the Europeans are going to help. I bet one year from now the Georgian army will be better equipped than right before the Russians started carrying off the Georgians' stuff. (I just saw a report the Russians are going to try and raise a couple of old US coast guard cutters previously owned by the Georgians, now to be new elements of the Black Sea fleet.)

    check your PM

  12. Well that is that. He is now the greatest Olympian in history. Pretty damn sweet.

Man, I have never seen so many records broken.

The semi final race before Phelp's, the French guy broke the Aussie's world record. The next race the Aussie guy friggin' won his record back! Unbelievable.

    Mord.

    greatest olympian i think not.....

    the swimming events are ridiculous

    why...

because you have you various distance events

100...200.. up to 1500m or whatever and thats fine... relay... fine

but then you get the whole lot 3 times again in different styles.. what kind of nonsense is that.

    medley relay????? talk about freebie

ok if you want to compare apples to apples allow the track and field athletes to repeat all the running events again but this time running backwards.. or how about the 100m sprint with your hands behind your back while we are at it. or the tossing the hammer DOWNHILL.. discus indoors.....

is it any wonder that multiple winners of medals are most likely to come from the pool?

alternatively have the events in the pool reduced to freestyle only...

its a swiming race..get from A to B anyway you can as long as its swimming

just for balance you can get rid of the walk as thats ridiculous as well..

phelps is awesome but carl lewis is a greater olympian as is redgrave and numerous others

  13. this is the sort of thing virgin does..

I don't mind as much as they don't tell you.. I had to wade through the small print onsite to find out why my speed went to grindingly slow all of a sudden

its not unlimited broadband its traffic managed..

they also move the goalposts around.. the advent of streamed video, iplayer in particular has hit virgins bandwidth

if your watching streamed tv distributed via a router busting these "unlimited" accounts happens.

our house has 4 computers sharing 1 service and we have to watch the clock for tv online

collecting information is a no no in my book

  14. You'll know better then me about parachutes, though I remember hearing that BASE jumpers have their own special parachutes. Not really much point going for the reserve chute at the heights they jump from.

Look, I don't have a solid explanation that covers all the bases, as I admitted in my previous post, but what I'm seeing in that movie is making me very weary of taking it on face value. Maybe I've read one too many Kettler threads but something seems very fishy to me.

yeah might be faked in numerous ways who knows

to be honest I don't know what rigs base guys have these days but you(I) would still want the option to be able to cut away even if one had no reserve.. a snarled canopy on the ground etc..

this site has fairly conventional rigs

there may be stunt rigs that look like back packs or have no/hidden leg straps..

    OTOH

never underestimate the reckless stupidity of young men... its all part of growing up and getting scared.

    Boris

  15. you can't wear a rig under your trousers without it showing

doesn't look like a rig to me theres no cut away three ring on the shoulder straps.. if it is a rig its some special version perhaps for microlights or sumfink?

also even if they have a stunt chute on its still sumfink I wouldn't do and I'm a qualified cat 10 skydiver

"friggin in the riggin" in french... sex pistol cover

I claim 10 bonus points for spotting that.

Newbie is too kind a word for this kind of indolence. And you're whining already, here in the complaints thread?

no I'm whining in this thread

here I'm not whining. even though it is the complaints thread.. which is kinda of the point of a complaints thread I guess
