So what is this "bidding system" all about?

Why is AA researching frowned upon?

New to the game, but like what I see & read! My question is about modding the files. Is there a way to edit, for example, the unit stats/leaders etc. Does it involve unpacking certain files & which files would one edit. Thanks for any help.
