  1. Philippe, as always you ride to the rescue. Thanks
  2. US vs USSR was doable in Steel Panthers. Anyone remember that one? A lot of fun mowing down the Russian infantry hordes with quad 50's on the back of American halftracks. Not so fun in Sherman tanks running up against IS-2's.
  3. Thanks Sanok, I have downloaded mods but not scenarios. Anyone want to recommend a must have scenario? Please nothing like Cracking the Egg, I can't win as the Russians
  4. Zeveroboy, I am a little further into the book and yes, the translation is a little off, but some of the stories are great. For Infantry stories I recommend The Forgotten Soldier, by Guy Sajer. If you can get it, try Knights of the Black Cross. Finally, the memoirs of Hans Von Luck are better than Guderians if you can believe it.
  5. I absolutely love CMBB, CMBO etc. and saw CMBB special edition for $20 tonight. Are the extra scenarios and the 200 mods worth it? Will their be conflict issues with CMMOS? Uh basically, will my cmbb experience be enhanced greatly with special ed, or should I stick to CMBB?
  6. Hello all, I picked up a book tonight Armor Battles of the Waffen SS 1943-45 by Will Fey ISBN 0-8117-2905-2. Gripping, inside the turret accounts of tank battles at the platoon level and below.
  7. Steiner, I am only reiterating that the decision to not take out Malta was Hitler's, Mussolini's et al. and not Rommels. Rommel clearly understood the importance of neutralizing Malta as most of his POL, reinforcements etc. ended up on the bottom of the Med from attacks originating from Malta and Force Z. Huge mistake for OKW to not invade Malta. Greater mistake for Hitler to neglect the NA Theatre until the very end.
  8. Sorry Steiner, In regards to Malta. From The Rommel Papers by B.H. Libbell-Hart page 203. "After the plan for Malta (Operation Hercules) had been worked out, Mussolini went to Berchtesgaden, for a conference with Hitler. Here it was agreed that the attack on Malta should be launched after Rommels offensive in Africa. But soon after this agreement Hitler showed renewed doubts, that the Italians could not keep anything secret, that they had not the fighting spirit for such a difficult venture, that they would not be punctual in arriving to support the German parachute troops, that their navy would not face the British, and were thus likely to leave the German troops stranded without supplies."
  9. Michael, the story would have been different at Juno if the forces i.e. panzers, Rommel envisioned had been in place.
  10. Rommels ghost and I will agree that the naval gunfire support and air support would have been devastating. Rommel, was aware of the overwhelming allied fire support from his time in DAK, that is why he advocated for the panzer divisions to be as close to the beaches as possible. Rommel knew and history has shown us that the panzers would be massacred while moving up from their assembly areas in the rear to reinforce the front. However, when the boats are heading towards the beach you have to lift the bombardment to land them. Then you are left with DD's closing on the beach and direct firing with 5 inchers which would peel open a tank in 1 shot, but I doubt the accuracy would be very good. So there are thousands of guys, soaking wet, seasick, no anti-tank guns, no tank support as the shermans were under 30 feet of water, carrying only the ammo on their backs fighting for their lives while being raked with MG fire from the heights and Panther tanks with grenadiers engaging them on the beach. Remember, that Omaha was almost evacuated, if panzers and infantry support had been available, there would have been no one remaining to evacuate.
  11. Gentlemen, Rommels defenses would not be fixed a la Maginot line, but as the invader penetrates the line, you would effect a fighting withdrawl as additional anti tank gun screens and mines were laid along the enemys avenue of approach. Bog them down and then counterattack. Hold in the East, win in the West and back to the East for??
  12. Michael, Rommel was absolutely right that the best time to stop an amphibious invasion is at the beach and not when the invaders have had time to land, and bring ashore, tanks, artillery, supplies and a lot more men to consolidate their hold and begin building up for the eventual break out. If the panzer and panzer grenadier divisions had been at the invasion sector that morning the invasion would have failed.
  13. You have the discerning eye David I, Rommel's proposal was for 200 AT guns for each division.
  14. I will fire up MikeyD's Warm Place to sleep chop chop. In Danube Blues he initial forces are Hungarian but German reinforcements come in on turn 5. I'll keep you posted. Have you ever looked at this game? They are making a West Front game in addition to RGW. http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/agwshots.htm
  15. Is it possible that as you fan out along the axis of attack, the attacking forces would be succeptible to being counterattacked by the panzer corps held in reserve? Remember what Mainstein did at Kharkov. I think Rommels goal as Guderians was later, was to hold on in the East, dig in, mobile defense, local counterattacks, or even limited objective attacks, until the situation in the West could be decided. If the landings at Normandy were defeated then the Germans would have been able to shift a significant amount of forces East possibly go over to the offensive or sue for peace and hang on to the territory they were already holding.
  16. The following was Rommels idea for stabilizing German forces on the Eastern Front while preparing to defeat the D-Day landings. Imagine, the master of mobile warfare came to believe that victory could not be achieved by mobile warfare because the German armaments industry couldn't keep pace with the allies in war production. Rommel's solution "The Russian attacks head on, with enormous expenditure of material and tries to smash his way thru by sheer force of numbers." "If we can give the German infantry divisions 200 75mm PAK's and install them in carefully prepared positions, covered by large minefields we shall be able to halt the Russians." "There is not the slightest hope of our keeping pace with the enemy in the production of tanks, but we certainly can in the production of anti tank guns." "For every 1 tank the Russian makes, we can make 10 anti tank guns." "Suppose that the Russians attack in a heavily mined sector where our anti tank guns are forming a screen 6 miles deep, for all of the Russians mass of material they are bound to bog down in the first few days and then have to gnaw there way through slowly." "Meanwhile, we shall be installing more anti tank guns behind our screen." "If the enemy makes 3 miles progress per day, we must build 6 miles depth of anti tank screen and let him run himself to a standstill." "Our last chance in the East lies in equipping the army throughly for and unyielding defense." "But the West is the place that matters, if we manange to throw the British and Americans back into the sea it will be a long time before they return.
  17. Philippe, I am mostly there thanks to your magnamious efforts. I can get the German winter mods to run in a quick battle, and I can get the Russian winter mods to run in Danube blues, but I cannot get the German winter mod to run in Danube Blues, the German tanks, halftracks etc. always enter in brown. I am very happy to see a King Tiger in winter in a quick battle. Again, Thanks.
  18. Hey Philippe only the Russian winter mods are working. I don't know what the issue is with the German winter mods. Should I just delete them and go grab winter mods at http://www.cmmods.com/web/CMMods.nsf Are you required to run CMMOS with the mods at that site? If so, where do you install the rule sets? 18 months writing rules? Hardcore
  19. Philippe, thanks for all of your help. Hopefully I can get a winter Tiger to brew up lots of T34's with your help. Here is where I got the mod winterfahrzeuge_dunkelgrau winterfahrzeuge_deunkelgelb http://www.combatmission.com/cmmos/Winterfahrzeuge/Winterfahrzeuge1.htm I have been able to get Zimniy_Kamuflyazh_RuleSet to work. The T34's in Danube Blues goto whitewash http://www.combatmission.com/cmmos/Zimniy_Kamuflyazh/Zimniy_Kamuflyazh1.htm path to CMBB is C:\Program Files\CMBB\MODS C:\Program Files\CMBB\Rule Sets path to cmmos is C:\Program Files\GEM Software Productions\CM Mod Option Selector I apply the mod and click done when finished. In regards to winterfahrzeuge it takes about 60 seconds to apply as it rather large If you can recommend another winter mod for German AC's, AG's, tank and guns that you like I will use it instead. in regards to the mods at http://www.cmmods.com/web/CMMods.nsf I do not see where to download the rule sets. Again, thanks
  20. Do you have to run cmmos to load Tarkus' Dark Steel Interface or do you just copy and paste the bmp's into the bmp folder? Thank for all your assistance to my rookie mod questions.
  21. Now that I have found mods out there I am turning into a modslut like DavidI said. I am running cmmos ver 4.03 and I haven't figured out how to apply the mod for white wash German vehicles. I downloaded the rulesets and mods for, winterfahrzeuge dunklegrau winterfahrzeuge dunklegelb However, when I apply those mods and play for example Danube Blues I do not get the Tigers, Stugs or 251's in winter camo.
