In a forum about a WWII game, it is rather shocking to hear you say that France wins anything at all actually.
  2. Wouldn't it be neat if tiles (including sea tiles and including convoy attacks) were overlayed with a red hue to indicate where battles where fought in the last turn. It would give a since of where the action was and it would eliminate having to look at lists of coordinates to find where your convoys are getting hit. If you REALLY want to get fancy, then hold on to the list for a couple of turns and make the overlay color for 1 turn ago light orange and 2 turns ago yellow to show action over time. Finally, make the whole system configurable so people can select no shading, last turn only or last 3 turns.

  3. Yep. Nietzsche was obviously German, so the quote is actually:

Wer mit Ungeheuern kämpft, mag zusehn, dass er nicht dabei zum Ungeheuer wird. Und wenn du lange in einen Abgrund blickst, blickt der Abgrund auch in dich hinein.
So the literal translation would be:

Who with monsters fights, should look to it, that he not thereby himself a monster becomes. And when you for a long time into an abyss look, looks the abyss also into you.
Anything beyond that is simply poetic license of the translator.

EDIT: For whatever it is worth, DD's translation appears to be closer to original text.

  4. I know this is a knit, but why does the game end once you achieve a major victory? Sure, the game is essentially over, and I appreciate the splash screen but it then returns to the game screen but doesn't allow me to play on if I wish. I am sure many would think it pointless to play on, but what does it hurt? Sometimes I just want to mindlessly go on and plant my flag everywhere yet I cannot do so? The game is best when it gives players more options and I see no reason not to let players keep going if they wish to do so.

  5. I don't like rules that say you simply cannot do something. I prefer rules that make the consequences so severe that you won't do it. For example, I could see where a DoW on an "ally" would create a diplomatic stir. What if a DoW on a nation slanted in your direction by more than 25% caused ALL other nations to slant towards your enemy by whatever amount the target nation was slanted towards you. So, if Spain is 50% tilted towards the Axis and Germany declares war, All neutrals (including the US and the USSR) tilt towards the Allies by 50%.

The same might occur with Minors already in the war so that if they ever get to where they are at less than even, they switch sides. So, Hungary joins the Axis and is +100% towards Germany. Spain and Turkey are both +51% Axis and Germany declares war on both. Hungary takes double -51% penalties and is now +2% Allies. At that point, she switches sides and immediately makes peace with the Allies and declares war on Germany. Her allegiance is then set to +100% Allies.

It's something we don't want, whether we are Jew, Gentile, Catholic, Baptist, Christian, Atheist, Buddaboy, Tree Hugger, Male, Female, Black, White, Yellow, Green, Purple, Young, Old, Rich, Poor, Fat, Skinny, Bald, Afro, Left Handed, Right Handed, Smart, Dumb, etc.

You get the idea? Take the Nazi flag & put it in the burn pile. Has nothing to do with Stalin, Po-Pot, or any other of your favorite killers.

    Rambo -

I understand your preference and I am tolerant enough to respect your right to play the game in whatever manner and with whatever symbols you choose.

The Crusades were done by the Catholics not Christians.

Just for the sake of clarity, at the time of the crusades Christian believers were split into the Catholic Church in Rome and the Eastern Orthodox Church in Constantinople. As discussed above, the crusades were the mutual response of both churches to the rise of the Muslims. Martin Luther did not arrive to form Protestantism until the 16th century, almost 500 years after Urban II's 1st crusade.

So, the crusades were perpetuated by the united Christian churches in existance at the time. The Bishops called for the crusades and, again as discussed above, the worst offenders were the peasants - the rank and file Christians - who took it upon themselves to expand their mission.

In every sense, the crusades were perpetuated by Christians. You might argue that they did not follow the true teachings or that they were not GOOD Christians, but what they did, they did for God in the name of Jesus Christ under the banner of His church and with the blessing of its duely appointed leaders.
