  1. now i know that these guns are generally very limited in use for CM games (lots of points and HUGE sound contact) and i've only really had any success on very specific maps (long range, open,no mortars).

I suppose they weren't too common historically either but i was wondering how they might have been used. Was it just a case of using them in very tough bunkers or were they used in the field.

    Thanks guys

  2. Made up a few little armour scenarios last night (damn they are more fun in CMBB than CMBO).

Basically one was a fight between 5 PzIV+1 StugIII (Crack) and 3 T34/43 (Elite)+10 T-70's (Veteran).Made to test out how good the PzIV is, I love it personally.Map Slightly wooded and pretty much split into two.

Second was 4 crack Elefants with some AT support (coupla guns,1 panzershreck) and 4 20mm scout cars

    Vs

1 Plt Reg T34/85, 2 Plt Valentine IX (or whichever has the 57mm gun),2 plt T-70, 1 plt Su76.Fairly wooded map with the Germans in a small village.

Battle 1: the 3 T-34's mangage to knock out a PzIV and the Stug with one gun damaged.Later on the two attack a PzIV from the flank and fail miserably until it casually wastes them.

The T-70's on the other flank race into 3PzIVs (10 of the little buggers) and after a hectic two minutes knock out two then get the one that toasted my T34's.The last one backs away with gun damage and gets hail fired into surrender, 3 star little T-70's left (we took a pounding) but such a fun little battle.

Battle 2: A lot longer and a LOT bloodier. The 'big' tanks advanced on my right and 15 small ones on my left through cover. The small ones managed to fight a good running battle with the scout cars (lost 1 gun damage and 1 to an elefant) and came around to the side of the village containing the Elefants. The right didnt make it too far with 5 tanks (3 Val,2 T34/85's) smoked very quickly (elefants and AT guns) and only one left hiding behind a wood (1 Elefant knocked out with a lucky hit).

The fun bit was the next few minutes when i was running circles around 3 elefants with about 5 T 70s and an Su76, they were too fast to hit but if they got caught in the firing line it was bye bye baby. Finally immobilised the big bad guys with 2 T70 and the Su76 left (lost a couple to the panzerschreck and trying to take out the AT guns).

so im dutifully pounding the rear armour at about 10m range (doing diddley squat as you can imagine, not as many weak point penetrations as in CMBO) and i bring in my reserve platoon of Vals.........ooops went into the LOS and they all got smoked bugger.

To be fair to the SU-76 he managed to penetrate one's rear plate and they bailed, 2 left.Ah yes then i remember my last T34, 5 minutes driving the long way round (to avoid any LOS problems) and he was close in behind them with the 3 light vehicles, still dutifully firing away.2 shots and its all over.

    Axis: 4 Elefants,4 scout cars

    Russian:2 T34,6 vals,8 T 70,3 Su76 + 1 damage

What a bloody but bloody good fun conflict with mini tanks versus monsters smile.gif

  3. Had an interesting little experience the other night with carriers.Admittedly it was CMBO but basically two of my tigers had got in the midst of a big group of HTs (having wiped out most of the armour) on a narrow road in bocage (nowhere for them to run).

The HTs were getting pasted and abandoned from both AP and MG fire. When they were hit some exploded (normal boom) and burned, nothing special.

When i hit one of the universal carriers though, the thing nearly went nuclear (REALLY big bangs).Ok fair enough i think....maybe it was an 88 HE round.Next one that i hit (speeding away down the road to no avail) was with an AP round (i watched the ammo monitor) and again we had nuclear type carrier.

Now if they were designated as ammo carriers i could understand this but they are just HT equivalents arent they? Was it just coindidence that i happened to get two catastrophic exlosions on the same vehicle model within 2 minutes of each other?

  4. Yeah i think Tigers are cool for a solid, tough beast with a lot of punch. Not so good at advancing (in small groups anyway) because they're slow enough to be flanked and out-maneuvered (unless you do a Kursk and have them at the head of an armoured V of tanks).

King Tigers i think are a little underpowered in CMBO (FAIRLY easy to eliminate and punch through with big guns) compared to CMBB (where i've had JS2's and others bouncing shells off for 5 minutes before leisurely being taken out in return).

  5. He is lying to you then....or he is confused.

Combat mission - Beyond Overlord has been out for 3/4 years i think

Combat mission - Barbarossa to Berlin has been out for at least a year

Combat mission - Afrika Korps has been out for a few months i think.

Either he means you will get CM:Afrika or he is pretending that CM:Barbarossa to Berlin is a brand new game.

  6. I don't imagine they would have come under this role often (being a few miiles behind the front line in general) but it certainly could happen. If i was an artillery man and tanks broke through I'd crank the barrel down for direct fire (assuming there was no escape transport available). It may only be HE but with a 155mm and high velocity its gonna pack a punch (especially early war)

  7. Im getting a bit downhearted when playing CMBB at the moment.I pick a scenario and there is a huge distance to cover with lots of open spaces and mainly infantry.

Even in CMBO I have problems moving infantry across open ground without getting pounded and with the more powerful suppresive effect of MG fire in CMBB its even tougher.

Help please. Hopefully I will start using JasonC type tactics soon and get more into CMBB.

  8. what about one for the episode where there are two US companies in one hedgerow and Germans in a hedgerow across the field?

Halfway through the firefight, in roll a coupla halftracks,a jagdpanther, a Stug III (i think) and maybe a panther (it runs over somebody at the end of the fight).

Just after the US knock out the stug with a bazooka shot, the shermans turn up and the Germans retreat.

That one was a really cool episode.

  9. Now wouldn't you love that to be modelled in CM :D

Hmmm I can imagine we might see a little bit more 'track' damage to that particualr unit as well.

Do you think they could fit 3 men in the side turrets, you wouldn't get three of that guy in there. So either he is a giant or the tank was crewed by midgets...........with waffles

  10. Basically the game is based around battles and operations (an operation being a few battles). There is no 'Grand Campaign' per se where you would work through the historical war.

The best i can advise is to get a variety of scenarios in roughly date order and play through them (hopefully getting the feel of working through the various parts of the war).

As to the flag question, there is a thing called Fog of War.Like in reality, you can't see where the enemy is unless one of your units physically sees them.

What has happened with you is that you have caused the enemy to run out of you sight. The flag represents the last place your men saw the enemy. They MAY still be there (hiding and scared) in which case area fire may further suppress and kill them but they MAY have carried on running or moved a different way.

To find out if the enemy are still there, you must move one of your units close enough to see the point where the flag is.If the enemy are there you should see them, if they've moved on then the flag will disappear.

    Hope thats clear.
