Can someone explain the thinking behind this? I'm finding myself pretty confused by this whole IAR thing. The idea is to trade the SAW light machine guns for the IAR, which is just a slightly more accurate assault rifle with both single shot and full auto? So its just a slightly more accurate version of what regular riflemen have been using since Vietnam? The advance is increasing single shot reach from 500+m to 800m? Does it at least have a longer barrel... or maybe more powder in the ammo? I'm just not really getting how this is an upgrade at all. If it was a M16 replacement it would be an upgrade.... but its so not a machine gun. I guess the thinking is that the time for squads having integrated MG support is just now starting to be seen as old fashioned, out of date, ww2 style?
I've always had a bit of mixed feeling about the SAW in the first place, not completely sure it was wise to give up the big bullets, but having 200 per mag was/is pretty great. The bullets got smaller but you got more of them. This change on the other hand takes the number of loaded bullets per fire team from 200+90=290 to 30+90=120.

I think the APS systems have always been working on HEAT rounds for whatever reason
-
I think you guys are still missing the joke, it was in reference to the"fact" that "syria is where tank turrets go to learn to fly"
-
So do people agree that the reason it has a plastic case is so it can be used safely at closer to point blank range?

Its really fun, Ive had some of my more exciting gaming moments on it. Yesterday I spent all day racing the Russians to disarm North Korea, much fun! Managed to ground at least 150 aircraft by hitting the runways and taxiways, made it a lot easier. The most shocking and dramatic thing I've had happen is seeing an "vampire" steaking in out of nowhere ungodly fast, into my Amphibious Assault group, sinking one of my huge Marine Amphibious assault docking ship with over 1500 digital souls into the deep. Turned out China got a bead on me with one of its anti ship ballistic missiles. Needed to keep their long range surveillance off my capital ships.

See what I was saying about it probably not mattering all that much if it blows up a little early from APS?

OMG was thatsomehow sort of terrifying? I think I might have just glimpsed a scary part of the future. On the plus side if the paranoid guy thinks the Man is watching him and the government has a swarm of drones flying a 100 m circle around him, people wouldnt think he were crazy

My intuition tells me that the main problem isnt that the APS can hit the A2G missiles, but that the missiles don't still manage to shred the tank anyway.
At least the maverick and russian at25 or whatever its called. those are both freaken huge.

Maybe as in model dependent. a lot of them are operated from control stations.

Maybe the UAV "spotter" is only the battlefield representative with radio/datalink contact to the off map (and probably off continent) UAV operator.

I thought the interview quotes were quite insightful and very relevant to the military situation. I've always thought that why the wars are fought is one of the most important details.

IMHO has been here since 2000 so I think him working for Putin as a propaganda agent is unlikely

I think this is a comment on the skin?

The game simulates the loopholes by letting the guns shoot while deployed, the two examples here are just bad luck where other LOS blockages are in play.

so far for me 2 of the 3 instances where they move because of incoming without me asking it was great and they saved themselves, but the 3rd time that sort of thing was going on they kept moving somewhere stupid, and I couldn't stop it and it was frustrating.
It seems like its not supposed to represent the dudes panicking and running but keeping their cool and running, in which case it would be great if it were an option. Now that they want to take the initiative to move themselves, id like to be able to give em an order to hold their ground until they actually panic and run. The movement is usually good (66% for me) but when you need em to stay put it is important for them to try.
Edit to add: Maybe with that stop sign button next to the fall back button?

There is a lot of support in that campaign, I'm not sure about the second mission, you might be outa luck there, but I'd guess youll get some bigger guns soon.

wow that thing is straight out of a post Apocalypse. PRETTY BADASS!

Erwin, you are clearly not getting the divided nature of the American populace, WE are the GOOD guys, WE do GOOD!

Steve doesn't like the discussion getting too weird and has asked JK not to talk about that stuff on here at least once, so best to move it to private messages if you want to ask more questions fairly.
-
Well I'm not going o go buying Suvorov's book and believe everything in it, but this particular factoid from JK about the variety of calibers seems straight forward enough to me that I believe it completely without looking an inch further
-
I think Steve mighta said that the way we have it now is sort of a feature to keep us from gamily switching things around too much.
But I think it would be pretty cool if we could.
-
Thank you for the thorough reply JK, that's just the sort of thing I was looking for!
-
That's a pretty mean sounding weapon. So the idea is to be able to shoot the guys in the face at near point blank range with a grenade launcher, without killing yourself, right?
JK, I got curious about what you were saying about the strange calibers, was hoping to read more but my googlefu was lacking and I'm feeling lazy.

Steve, all that stuff you said about Georgia just sounded like a repeat of what western propaganda was telling us about the situation during the war, to unsuccessfully try to get us amped up for war in time to intercede. You, as the media did, seem to be overlooking that South Ossetia had long ago peacefully succeeded with an overwhelming vote, and had been successfully running their own government for a long time.
The difference between T-64, T-72 and T-80.

Pretty freaken hilarious. If someone manages to find the KV-1 worship thread id appreciate a linky too.. I must admit the bias got to me, those big rollers look pretty great and serious while the little ones do look puny now that he mentions it.
Oh and the T64 does sound like a motor bike while T72 sounds like a tank
