  1. My strategies come from a multitude of sources. A lot of it comes from reading this board, especially posts by JasonC, that guy knows his stuff. I also have read the American handbook on the German armed forces, and I've got some general ideas from that. It's available at http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/DL/chron.htm#AWorldWarII19391945

However, most of it actually comes from my own ideas and gut feelings. I think that you can analyze stuff all you want, but to me it just comes down to what I think will be the best strategy for each engagement. Also, know your men and their equipment! Tactics that may work for the Germans may lead to defeat with the allies.

One of the great things about CMBO is that you can use a multitude of tactics to solve any given problem.

  2. I am encountering major slowdowns with CMBB on my new GeForce FX 5200. The slowdowns only seem to occur when there are unit bases, lines, text,or unit info boxes are on the screen. I belive this is related to the color compression routines, as all of the above icons have changed colors since the new card has been installed. This has also happened with both stock and the latest drivers as well. If anyone can give me any pointers on how it can be fixed, I would be very appriciative.

I have had a lot of success with this kind of strategy. By using tanks like Tigers you can KO enemy AT guns at long ranges without much danger to your lighter tanks or vehicles. I often use a few Tigers to clear out any long range AT fire, then moving light tanks, vehicles, and infantry in under the overwatch of the Tigers to finish off anything the heavies missed.

  4. Well, I'm new to the game, but I've had a great ammount of success with a reverse-slope defense against the AI (which may explain it, but hey, I'm new!) In a 2000 pt. allied assault, I inflicted 375 casualties and 7 lost vehicles to only 50 casualties! Using 2 SS Motorized Panzergrenadier companies, 3 extra HMGs, some extra shrecks, 2 quad 20mm, a 105 FO, and a few Hetzers, this defense worked well for me.

  5. JasonC had a post a while ago on "How to attack like a German," and while I can't find the link, I have it copied in Word. Here's what it had for 2000 point attack/meeting engagement:

    2000 Point Panzer Forces

    12 Pz IV

4 SS Mot. Pz Gdr Platoon (2 veteran or +2 vet schreck)

    Or

    10 Jagdpanzer IV

5 SS Mot. Pz Gdr Platoon

    3 Schreck

1 81mm FO (use for smoke)

    Or

    8 Tiger I

4 SS Mot. Pz Gdr Platoon

    2 Schreck

Everything goes but tank infantry teams, in half company armor strength or greater, with 2-3 AFVs per infantry platoon. You can trade in one tank for 1 artillery module if you feel you must have some indirect fire support. Spend leftovers on schrecks.

    2000 Point Infantry Forces

    6 StuG III

    3 StuH

    3 VG Company

    5 Schreck

    2 105mm FO (or 120mm)

Again a company of armor but less capable types, and again with a full battalion's worth of infantry, and some sort of artillery support. The basic method of attack is as described earlier for infantry. Scout and fix with the VG rifles and one StuG platoon, fire the artillery ahead of the main attack, then hit them with everything else on a narrow front.

I've tried the 12 PzIV/ 4 mot. platoons before on an assault and won a minor victory. The only problem I encountered was that the terrain had patches of woods/tall pines in which the defender holed up, out of the LOS for my direct fire HE from the tanks. If you're going to encounter such terrain, a 105 FO or two may be useful.
  6. I'm thinking about picking up CMBO in retail this week, since it's finally being released in the US. I'm not sure if it is worth buying due to the fact that I could just get CMBB and wait for the new CMAK to be released. The only thing that worries me about buying CMBO are the flaws that I've read about- example: no modeled optics. Will these flaws affect the gameplay enough to become a major annoyance, or can you play through them pretty well?
