  1. "Special Forces" in the narrow sense, particularly as used in Vietnam, aren't supermen at all. They are just trained to work in environments detached from support and to work with locals to help them. They have to march more and faster, that's the core of the more intensive selection. But they aren't supposed to do Superman stuff.

"Special Forces" in the wider sense of the term are also units like Delta Force, Seal Team 6 and the Rangers, which are actually expected to perform much better in a firefight. You have a very hard selection on those.

First, while they aren't "supermen", they are specifically selected to never quit, do incredible amounts of teamwork and be creative in any situation. Your first sentence is a bit short on those.

Second, Delta, Seals, Army Spec Ops, Force Recon and USAF Battlefield Airmen ARE what you commonly call "Spec Ops". There is no "wider definition" of the term, even including Rangers and 10th Mountain can sometimes be a stretch. But they aren't necessarily just expected to be better in a direct firefight. They also recive an insane amount of training on unconventional warfare, language skills, climate preparations, and cultural awareness.

I've met a few of those guys (in fact one ex SOF Operator is sitting here at my company two doors down the hallway, and I spent two days at Hurlburt Field, FL this summer), and it's not their physical strength - it's their willpower, readiness to constantly learn and excel at everthing they do which makes them SOF material.

  2. My IE6 was starting to behave weirdly, so I tried FF 3.0 but couldn't get into it after a few days. Chrome I have running now for about half a work day, and I haven't touched IE since. I think I'll install it at home too - just much faster, much cleaner, with some clever additions over IE6 or even IE7.

  3. If you're looking for something nice and quick, doesn't have to be military, and are not too concerned for modern graphics, look for the "Search and Rescue" series, that let you fly Coast Guard helos and similar stuff, using winches and water buckets to perform aerial work.

Otherwise the latest decent combat helo sim I remember is Enemy Engaged: Commanche vs. Hokum, which has attracted a large mod community.

Or just get a copy of FS2004 for cheap, and fill it with your favorite addon helos.

  4. Yep, if you feel the inspiration, please do design a few Ironman scenarios. Would be appreciated - if possible, do include a ready to print map layout as well.

Still would love a list of units somewhere on the screen (toggleable) with the option to click and jump - maybe even blinking or color-coded for unit status (like reciving fire).

  5. I seem to remember, way ago when CMSF was still being designed, there had been talks to implement a true "Iron Man" mode into the code.

If the UI had a list of all available units to select from, that would be just great - right now I can see the problems since selecting multiple units and similar stuff wouldn't work.

  6. If you can't tell, I have a lot of pent up frustration that's been building up since the Football Pro series died. EA puts out crap year after year and expects people to pay for it, then blames pirates when people simply don't see the need to pay $60 for what is basically a glorified patch or roster update. I've heard that they're bringing the PC version out again next year, but I guarantee that if they don't make serious changes and improvements, they will continue to be disappointed with the sales.

This is in a nutshell what most big publishers do with most games. Ubisoft's Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six have been going a very similar way, less brains required, less new stuff added. Ditto racing games. That's why I'll take anything EA, Ubisoft or Activision/Blizzard say about piracy and losses with a LARGE grain of salt.

  7. It's also worth noting that many gamers today own two or even three systems, PC + Console(s).

Expecting console ports to sell equally well on the PC is unrealistic, especially if the game plays better on a controller in front of the tv, with friends - as is typically the case with sports games.

For Crysis, what killed their sales were the hardware requirements, as well as mixing the unrealistic alien stuff into an otherwise quite tactical shooter. Bad business decisions they should blame themself for, not the pirates.

  8. PC gaming should be a part of the High Culture whereas Console Gaming is an event in the Special Olympics, and not that it is relevant in most instances, but in a similar vein, Mac gaming is a part of the "I want to believe movement' and could be interpreted by using parapsychology.

Sig Material here. Not that I dislike Console or Mac Gamers.

Still think that big publishers are just using Piracy as a cheap excuse to produce more console games, which are less challenging to develop and test, sadly often also less challenging on the brain. The industry wants to make big bucks quick. Nothing wrong with that, but blaming on piracy alone... Oblivion was a AAA title without any copy protection and sold very well, so obviously it can be done.

  9. Hi Guys

What scenarios would you recommend for a new guy to truly experience the good points of CMSF?

Since I've installed it on sunday, I played trough the training campaign, three quick battles and three times the same default small unit battle (one platoon vs. another over a small city centre, don't remember the name).

The impression I have right now is that on the US side, I always win - overhelming firepower from Strykers and Bradleys in Overwatch, Squads that quickly un-pin, Javelins and other assorted goodies to take out the trash with. Playing on "Veteran" level - medium difficulty - this is too easy.

OTOH, playing the Syrians is hell. In that small city battle scenario, you have squads you can't split, they get pinned and panick almost instantly, they never seem to spot the US troops even when being fired upon from across the street.

One side is too easy, the other too hard. May be realistic, but I guess there must be scenarios set to even out the playing field. Recommendations?

  10. Paper Tiger, I have the printed manual with the game, it tells very little about QBs. How is the 1,10 manual gonna help me here?

Mord, thanks for the info. I think it was your mod I saw in another thread, with less visible unit bases... gonna try that.

If anyone else has clear infos on how to get a good QB going with Arty and Air Support, I'd appreciate that. I don't have enough online time to read the manual up there, and the 1.10 may anyway include changes that don't apply to my version.

  11. Sorry Guys, these are probably lame questions, but I did run searches and the terms are just too generic. Basically I got the game for a great price in the US, I can't play it right now, but we tested it at a friend's place and immediatly had some questions, compared to CMBB (no attacks or criticism, I just want to know how this is supposed to work):

    1) No Artillery or Air in QBs - in fact no option to select specific forces anymore?

    2) No ability to edit or move waypoints once they are set?

    3) Can I get rid of the base markers for the units (I think I saw a mod, but shouldn't there be a simple hotkey?)

    4) Same for floating icons.

Sorry if these sound very redundant, my internet access while on holiday is quite restricted, yet I want to get playing when I'm home. It seems like a great game, but this stuff made us stumple.

  12. Hi Guys...

Currently on holidays in the US (FL) I spotted a paradox boxed copy of CM:SF at Gamestop, just 10 bucks so I had to buy. Had been considering ordering online in europe, but this was a no-brainer.

However, nowwhere in the box (double-size plastic DVD case) can I find a printed license key. I have the manual, CD, map of syria, but no key to be seen anywhere.

The manual talks about e-license and a key requirement, so I'm wondering if I need to go back into Gamestop and exchange it? My game system is at home, I can't try to install it here. Will I need a disk in the drive once it's activated?

    thanks for your help

    RS

PS: If anyone has the link to the latest patch handy for this version, that would be great.

  13. One point I haven't seen mentioned a lot is the X-Band Radar to be build in Czechia. As far as I understand the system, this is a high-resolution radar able to sort decoys from real warheads, with a range over much of Russia up to the north as far as Island.

I havent researched yet where the russians (if at all) test their missiles and systems, but what they get here is a neighbour constantly spying on anything moving in a large part of their air space. X-Band is a "basically optical" wave, so likely the curvature of the earth will put much of russia's lower air space in the shadow, but they may well have concerns that the system will be used to keep an eye on them.

  14. From my limited programming knowledge, I don't think that putting small damage decals onto textures would tax the vid card much. These are really very small texture files.

Much more complicated to program and burdensome for the CPU to keep track of the impact points, and which decals to place in which spot.
