All far right taking points amplified by Putin's social media hit squad in the UK.

I doubt a 60+ resident of a Northeast coastal town whose economy was devastated by EU fishing quotas cares a damn what Putin thinks, if they even use social media. The idea that Russia caused Brexit is pretty ridiculous.

Supporters of Brexit are very similar to the Catalan independence movement in many ways.  Emotionally driven, hostile to rationale discussion, and enhanced by Russian manipulation to further Russian interests.

Wow, just read this. As a Brit who voted for Brexit, I think maybe Steve should stick to military matters as this is pretty insulting and frankly bat **** crazy. My reason for voting Brexit, for the record, is that I believe in democracy and the EU is profoundly undemocratic. We got rid of a king in the 1600s because he was overruling our parliament. The EU over the passed decades has imposed thousands of laws on the UK we had to accept by treaty obligation. It was always about democracy and sovereignty for me and many others, not stupidity, irrationality, or Russian manipulation.

In order to cut off the main roads to Ukraine from Poland they'd need to make >300km progress, leaving open roads from Romania, Hungary and Slovakia to the south/southwest.

You could well be right there. Interdiction of all the truck loads of anti-tank weapons soon to be arriving on the border.

  4. I suspect all that will happen in the peace talks is that Russia will demand that Ukraine capitulates to save the lives that will soon be lost when the main Russian assaults on Kyiv and Kharkiv commence. It will be just a way of offloading responsibility for catastrophic destruction and loss of life onto the Ukrainian leadership.

Ukrainians have shown themselves to be very brave, but by arming civilians, Ukraine has also blurred the distinction between combatants and non-combatants, and I fear this will lead to really bad things down the road.

I saw a US Media reporter say that two journalists were killed when armed civilians shot up their car believing them to be saboteurs - so, yes. [Edit] Not probably the "bad things" you had in mind but untrained civilians with AKs and fear of spies and saboteurs in their midst is a bad combination.

  6. Quite a few Media reports talk about the Ukrainians repulsing Russian attacks on Kyiv and Kharkiv but I find them a bit disingenuous as the Russian forces repulsed appear to be just small reconnaissance units. I don't think the Russians have even started the main assault on these cities yet. A 12 km long convey of armour heading towards Kyiv has been spotted by satellite and this would appear to be the main assault force.

  7. Just to reiterate, as if it was needed, that I totally condemn what Russia has done, I do find we are already seeing Western Media bias in the way it is being reported. I've seen captured Russian soldiers being paraded before the cameras and asked why they are there, which breaches the Geneva Convention, without so much as a peep out of the Media. When the same thing happened to Western servicemen in Iraq, their ill-treatment was headline news.

  8. It may be a bit crass to mention but I wrote a scenario called "Neighbours From Hell" ages ago that you can still find on the internet if you search for it. The scenario is particularly topical now as it features a Separatist attack on a Ukraine-held village with Russian Spetsnaz assistance in the opening hours of the invasion. We are wargamers so hopefully nobody takes offense.

  9. I am finding it very hard to fathom what exactly is going on re. Russia and Ukraine. The West is saying they have credible intelligence that an invasion is planned. Russia denies this. Negotiations are going on to avoid war but what are these going to look like other than, "Hey Putin, don't invade or else" followed by the reply "Hey Biden, we're not planning to invade so get off your high horse". I don't see how an invasion would benefit Russia. Could the joint Russia-Belarus military exercises just be sabre rattling to try to elicit some sort of guarantee that Ukraine will never join NATO?

  10. Thanks. I think APS is a game changer in how to use armour. Whereas normally some hidden ATGM takes them out, with APS they tend to defeat the first ATGM and then destroy the revealed launcher team with return fire. Also the mass disembark in the open tactic tends to get every enemy with a rifle opening up at long range. You might take one or two casualties but then the accompanying IFVs will annihilate those enemy positions. You can't hit what you can't see so sometimes you have to give them something to shoot at! Basic tactics page 1 I guess but I still struggle. My main failing as a pixeltruppen commander is overcaution.

  11. I finally got a Ukrainian Surrender in this mission but I didn't have any ATGM assets to achieve this (perhaps a different version of this campaign?). In the end, I did something a bit unorthodox. I sent my tanks forward, first cautiously using cover. They came under fire but their "Arena" APS managed to defeat most incoming rounds/missiles and I only lost one. Seeing how effective the APS was I decided to take some more risks, reversing them out of cover and then advancing into the open on the main road towards the enemy held town. Again, they did well, losing one more tank but destroying enemy positions that revealed themselves. Given how well they were doing I decided to go all out and had all my infantry mount up and ordered their IFVs to join the tanks to form a huge mass of armour on the road. I then dismounted the infantry in plain view of the enemy and had every unit, vehicles and dismounts, advance. The enemy went nuts, opening up on the infantry from every firing position. This revealed all of their positions and my T-72s and BMP-3s decimated them with return fire HE. As the mass of troops and armour reached the outskirts of the town my Hind helicopters came on station and started reeking havoc on the enemy. The Ukrainians soon surrendered, leaving me with a total victory and around 25 dead and 25 wounded (rough figures) plus 3 tanks lost and about 5 IFVs (I'd already lost 2 before this "reckless" advance). On the whole I think it was effective, if bloody, and I'm tempted to be more aggressive with T-72s equipped with "Arena" APS in the future.
