  1. Actually, he does live in the boonies - year round cottager! I don't really agree with you, though, about general knowledge in North America. My impression is that among non-military history types the general belief is that the East Front was a minor distraction. This fellow, not a willfully ignorant person, for instance, thought Barbarossa started "just before" D-Day... part of this, I suppose, is the result of nationalist history teaching in North America, in which even the terms "Allied" or "Allies" often goes missing.

  2. This is a bit embarrassing: I'm up at my cottage and don't have any of my reference books handy. My neighbour skied over for a drink and saw me playing CM:BB, and couldn't believe anyone would simulate the "minor" East Front.

I think I convinced him of the sheer relative scale of the two, but he won't be truly convinced until I can give him the rough German casualty figures for each front (or % E v W). Anyone got a quick figure/ref for me, or a good url?

  3. Are there false positives with regard to minefield spotting (similar to the overestimation of tanks)? I just played a new scenario and several minefields were spotted and marked by my lads. About 10 turns later, I was reviewing the area now behind my lines so I could move some heavier assets forward, and noticed that some of the fields had now disappeared.

Would pioneer units de-mine a field without specific orders to do so? They seemed to adjust and walk around them at the time, rather than work on them.

  4. I'm having the same problem: I installed Cm:BB to "D" not "C" and can't run the patch from anywhere, even from within CMBB directory, without getting the "game not installed" error. I renamed the original exe and still nothing. Yes, CMBB does show up in the start menu.

I have a North American version of CM:BB and dl'd the regular flavour patch from www.avault.com

called "cmbb_v1_01_patch.exe" and it shows up as 64.9M in properties.

Does the cdv patch have a different name?

  5. This one's a cakewalk as the Axis, but has anyone done well as Allies? I've tried a few different AFV strategies (ambush, fast advance to front flanks, rear sniping, etc) without much luck. Infantry end up chewed to pieces despite good positions.

    Any advice?

PS Does anyone else keep a log of their AARs for scenarios?

  6. I made an idiot of myself here when CMBB came out, since I was having trouble getting the game to run and looked at the troubleshooting section of the manual. There on bottom of p245 is a ref to possible conflicts with the "opening movie." I wasted several days trying to sort out imaginary QT problems!

Some of the opening flicks for Close Combat were pretty good (sometimes the best thing...).
