  1. Well, I was doing my bit to keep web sales going, ordering a replacement copy of CM:BO this Wednesday. The next morning I see the "special edition" retail announcement.... Yikes, I've never had good timing...
  2. I threesome, err, I also second that obersvation: arty may not always be as effective for me as I want, but I've never had it land more than a few meters on average away from expected.
  3. Sounds like BC is more closely a competitor for Hidden and Dangerous 2 (if that is still in production on), than for CM.
  4. Hey, for those of us that got hooked up on CM with the release of BB (or who lost CM:BO like me) can you guys have a discount purchase option for a combo pack not only of CM:AK and CM:BB, but for CM:AK and CM:BO? Presumably you'll do one for all three together as well... I wish I'd ordered the CM:BB and CM:BO pack but forgot I'd lost CM:BO. Boohoo.
  5. Thanks all. This will get me started. It wasn't a particularly serious discussion, but it seemed my duty to correct his "impression." Interesting that Encarta bit's "Only the United States was spared..." Hmm, what was I saying about forgetting the other "Allies"? [ December 22, 2002, 11:08 AM: Message edited by: Rebus_Badger ]
  6. Actually, he does live in the boonies - year round cottager! I don't really agree with you, though, about general knowledge in North America. My impression is that among non-military history types the general belief is that the East Front was a minor distraction. This fellow, not a willfully ignorant person, for instance, thought Barbarossa started "just before" D-Day... part of this, I suppose, is the result of nationalist history teaching in North America, in which even the terms "Allied" or "Allies" often goes missing.
  7. This is a bit embarrassing: I'm up at my cottage and don't have any of my reference books handy. My neighbour skied over for a drink and saw me playing CM:BB, and couldn't believe anyone would simulate the "minor" East Front. I think I convinced him of the sheer relative scale of the two, but he won't be truly convinced until I can give him the rough German casualty figures for each front (or % E v W). Anyone got a quick figure/ref for me, or a good url?
  8. Thanks for the info - that must have been what happened. There is so much still to learn about CMBB, I'm enjoying myself immensely.
  9. Are there false positives with regard to minefield spotting (similar to the overestimation of tanks)? I just played a new scenario and several minefields were spotted and marked by my lads. About 10 turns later, I was reviewing the area now behind my lines so I could move some heavier assets forward, and noticed that some of the fields had now disappeared. Would pioneer units de-mine a field without specific orders to do so? They seemed to adjust and walk around them at the time, rather than work on them.
  10. Great. Yeah, I emailed avault about having more clarity on their dl page, and they have done so right away.
  11. Bah! So avault mislabelled the beast? Nothing on the patch "screen" when I try to run it indicates cdv.
  12. Lol. Well, I got lucky that first time and never even new til the end that there were three more tanks I never had to deal with... Nice early lesson though for me in my novice CMBB experience in creating overlapping fire zones, and flanking.
  13. I'm having the same problem: I installed Cm:BB to "D" not "C" and can't run the patch from anywhere, even from within CMBB directory, without getting the "game not installed" error. I renamed the original exe and still nothing. Yes, CMBB does show up in the start menu. I have a North American version of CM:BB and dl'd the regular flavour patch from www.avault.com called "cmbb_v1_01_patch.exe" and it shows up as 64.9M in properties. Does the cdv patch have a different name?
  14. This one's a cakewalk as the Axis, but has anyone done well as Allies? I've tried a few different AFV strategies (ambush, fast advance to front flanks, rear sniping, etc) without much luck. Infantry end up chewed to pieces despite good positions. Any advice? PS Does anyone else keep a log of their AARs for scenarios?
  15. I liked this one a lot. Played as Allies first and got a Major Victory at 72%, then played as Axis a couple of weeks later and got a Total at 85%. Pretty balanced, I thought. Much depends on the aircover - as Allies took 2 tigers/1 stug; as Axis didn't loose anything by careful hiding of units. Pain in the neck getting AFVs plotted through the scattered woods though...
  16. I made an idiot of myself here when CMBB came out, since I was having trouble getting the game to run and looked at the troubleshooting section of the manual. There on bottom of p245 is a ref to possible conflicts with the "opening movie." I wasted several days trying to sort out imaginary QT problems! Some of the opening flicks for Close Combat were pretty good (sometimes the best thing...).
  17. My goodness, you people should go outside for a little while...
  18. Great site; amazing rate of additions too. Very minor point: I wonder whether "Views" is the best word for the link to the mod files. It took me a sec to figure out this was the means to get the main listing. How about "listings" instead?
  19. I concur, Abbot's scenarios are a great deal of fun. I now use "A Cold Winter's Morning" to show off high-res games to interested boardgamers around here with great success. Use it with some of those great winter sloganized T-34's and it looks quite amazing! (ok, I admit this was a shameless effort to get to 30 posts)
  20. For what it's worth, I had the same behaviour in Hill312: no suppression, plenty of ammo, targeted to bunker... nothing. Luckily the bunker just gave up after a few turns when the trenches were all taken.
  21. If I recall correctly it is... if I recall correctly. I had to ask too.
