....... Great - big maps with few units ... that should be fun and VERY representative of modern warfare!!!

......OHT targetting ESM and ECM - - To say that these would not impact on gameplay is crazy ...

on the modern digital battlefield these things are deciding factors and cannot be seperated from

the troops on the ground with 'sensor to shooter' information systems becoming increasingly common place they cannot be easily left out of any game that hopes to do justice to modern warfare. BFC know all this and have represented is well in Tacops 4

....You make a statement like this and then talk about 'realism' in the next sentance ...amazing !

"If possible why not '39-43 Europe and Western Desert. You could have all those neat early tanks

that just did not work out (Matilda 1 comes to mind). It probably would not be too hard to have

both european terrain and desert terrain designed into the game."

....I agree ... North Africa and Europe together would be a good and viable option ...

I'd love to play CM in the desert. smile.gif

I just dont think North Africa alone presents much in the way of variable terain.

"Perhaps they'll set it the real North Africa rather than the Hollywood version"

.....Well last time i was on exercise in North Africa ( Ex Brightstar - Egypt) the terrain

(coastal and inland) seemed to be fairly realistic ! and i seem to remember lots of rocks

and sand ... dont recall any hollywood film crews in the area though :D

Gentlement ... please dont take these responses as 'flames' they are not intended

that way .... many of these topic have been discussed at length in other forums.

And most if not all options have been raised by others with similar views

Im still convinced we'll see CM3 remaining in WW2 time period ... an era the game

was designed for and is best suited to. I believe there is more milage in discussing

new features that we would like to see in the engine rewrite....

I stand firmly behind the whole ww2 game concept from the invasion of Poland ... (yes there were things prior to that but they were mainly political annexations) ...through to the fall of Berlin, Including the western desert, mediterranean europe & Islands, Balkans, amphibious warfare ( a special interest of mine!) and revist the E and W fronts.

America would love to have everyone think that war is so hi-tech today, and that their soldiers are safe due to all the digital equipment they throw arround. But basically war is no different now to how it was in the 1940s. The only real differences are physical. Weapons are more accurate and have a higher rate of fire, and tank's armour slopes are better so that more shots glance off. Yes the armour is thicker but the shells are better to make up for it. If everything is really so high tech, then how come "Friendly fire" is still so common.

As for the choppers being like fast halftracks or fighter bombers, I don't see how you can argue with that. Because that's how they behave! One lot are a fast and safe, but noisy, way to transport troops (and give them a little support with MGs). Like a a halftrack. The other lot fly arround firing big weapons at anything they see and think is an enemy. Like a fighter bomber. :D

  2. I think CM would be just right for any of these. The huge maps won't be a problem, with computing power like today's. The only real limitation is when there are too many units in a battle. Besides tanks may have an incredible range now, but they rarely need to shoot that far. Terrain usualy gets in the way. And they would miss at higher ranges.

And CM gameplay is great fun in cities, open ground, dense forrests, in fact anywhere where a battle might be fought. Helicopters and the other stuff Lou2000 mentioned could be programmed in and would not affect the gameplay element. For a start choppers would either be like fighter bombers you controll or like a fast M3 Halftrack that can cross any terrain.

I think it would be a shame to stick with WW2 Europe because it is the only realistic wargame in real time. And the way your plans go to ruin the whole time so you really have to think to win the battles is non existent anywhere else. I'd love to see it expanded over some different wars.

  3. The fictional modern one wouldn't work too well. It'd be great but then it'd get too comercial, and Microsoft would buy BattleFront or something nasty like that. You know... XBox only?

Pacific theatre does sound nice, but come on...

Hueys, Jungles, Napalm, The Doors, Apocalypse Now, and enough horrible attrocities to prevent any flag waving (We were soldiers managed anyway thanks to that Gibson b*st*rd).

  4. I've been playing CMBO for half a year now (and operation flashpoint since as long as i can remember) and I'm a part of one of the OFP MOD teams. I was wondering if CMBO or CMBB (ordering it from amazon tomorrow) are MODable. I mean fully not just texture swapping. Basically could you make whole new units for the game with new 3D models and configuration files?

If yes then where can I get info on how to do it or try to join a mod team?

  5. He did come up with the searchlights which made a cone of rotating light go arround enemy bombers. But there's no proof it was particularly effective. Don't go thinking Maskerline was a complete hero. All the proof we have is what he wrote in his autobiography. And loads of specialists in the war wrote books like that also claiming they "single handedly won operation overlord" or something. They always make themselves seem loads more important than they really were. Maskerlines military career ended in 1942, so for the last three years of the war he was ignored. Basically he can't have been nearly as great as people say he was.

But the point of this thread is that we really need some of those dummy tanks and tanks described as trucks in CMBO. So who's good at making addons? If you are then do this. Please.

    Thanks :D

  6. Just saw a program on chanell 4 about the allies using illusions during WW2. There was stuff about fake cities to confuse bombers, as well as searchlights with lenses to make a rotating light cone so enemy pilots couldn't see their targets.

The interesting bit though was about jeeps being disguised as tanks using plywood. Appearently they were done really realisticly. They even made trails just like a real tank and fired blank rounds from their "cannons." You had to be within a few metres to tell the difference.

Another thing they did was make tanks look like trucks. The tanks could drob their truck disguise so they could fire their weapons in just a few seconds!!!

I think someone really should make the disguised jeeps/tanks as an addon for CMBO. Just by making them a definate sherman (for instance) contact. Without any question marks. Until you have troops within literally 20 metres.

    Thanks for listening :D

  7. Hi :D ,

I'm a huge fan of Operation Flashpoint and rescently got hold of the combat Mission demo, so I ordered it from Amazon (should arrive tomorrow).

I was thinking that when Battlefront are done making "Combat Mission:Barbarossa to Berlin" they could make a Combat Mission:Vietnam, or maybe a modern day one with an imaginary war? Just think... Helicopters, Laser designation, Napalm!

CM is great but when battlefront start work on another sequel they should give WW2 a rest.

    Thanx. smile.gif
