  1. I wanted to know what tank people here like better sherman or mkIV and why. It seems to me that the sherman has some advantages over the mkIV like speed and a little better armor protection. But I think the mkIV's lower profile and higher velocity gun make up for those issues. I've been playing with several games with the mkIV and sherman and the mkIV always seems to out perform the sherman. what do you think? And what were some of the real life advantages and disadvantages of both tanks when facing off against eachother

I have to say one thing, guys, I *know* that the CMBO Tiger in close quarters dies mostly because of its lame gun turn rate (and no player control over the turret). All my tests, and apparently I'm the only one here who ever ran useful tests, indicate that this is the most deadly issue, and you can ignore that as you like, but please don't bury this thread under restatements of this.

Whether it is fair to give Tiger and especially Panther the slow turrets they have is a different matter. It has been discussed to death, though. So your only option is to use these tanks some other way than sabre range. How surprising.

To a lesser degree the Tiger dies from slow ROF. Look at the zeroing in mechanism, how importantant the second shot is when zeroing in is in effect (which is the case of both hunt or stand). So what happens if you are *always* the guy how gets the second shot off later than the opponent: you die. How surprising. You have a 24% to 82% hit probablity.

As for 20m shots, did anyone test whether a crack or elite crew is likely to get them wrong, too? Now this would finally an opportunity to apply "elite" status for a game like CMBO, simulate better nerves. Did anybody even looked whether CMBO gets this right?

And tom, *please* watch your quotes.

    <end rant>

Don't take the rant personally, everybody, but would you *please* discuss useful issues that could actually be incorporanted into the game?

There are so many corners of CMBO to bitch about with a point, and people keep retelling granddaddies war stories. Every trusted source I read supports the basic hit probablities of CMBO for normal crews at least with guns from 75mm Sherman to Panther gun.

Why don't you talk about more sophisticated zering in model? Or better turret commands, which is also a large factor why the Tiger 1 is much less useful in CMBO than in reality (and CMBB with covered arc command). Or a "advance until LOS to this point" command. Or knockout on penetration probablities. So much useful stuff we could fill this thread with.

Ya even though I like to bitch about the accuracy that isn't what ussually does me in in games. Like the PBEM I just had my scout platoon spotted a firefly over a hill so I ordered my mkIV up the hill and into a hull down posistion to ambush the enemy tank. Unfortunately for me the gunner decided it would be a good idea to turn his turret and fire at a group of infantry in heavy cover 500m away when he got to the hull down posistion over looking the firefly the firefly fired 3shots killing the mkIV on the 3rd :( I want to be able to tell my tank commander "hey there is a group of tanks over the crest pop up and ambush them" I as a commander would not order him to move up to the crest without telling him there were enemy tanks there....
  3. hmmm one thing I have noticed and I will have to do some tests, is that the tiger and most other tanks wont miss several times at close range (under 50m)like the panther does.

I know crazy **** happens in real life, I know I live....but lots of that random stuff never happens again for a long time, and if my gunner is going to miss at 20m twice I want an explination as to why he did(even if he had allergies and bumped the elevator or something!!!!)

On a somewhat related note. I've visited a lot of websites on tanks in ww2 and have been noticing the armor penetration tables are all about 20-40mm less than what CMBO's penetration tables show. Why this discrepancy.

  4. exactly illo, I mean sometimes I feel like my gunners in the tank are saying "humm well I got 2 first shot hits while moving at full speed just a minute ago so I guess I will miss this point blank shot in the sake of probobility" smile.gif that is what I mean by too linear.

Doug I base my empathic statement on my turret visibly turned toward the firefly and my gun also leveled at it. Then firing and seeing the round hit the ground on the other side firefly. Well lets see how did that get there? I dont recall ever hearing about a round coming out of a tank's barrel then magically going through the enemy tank without penetrating it...twice. Then again I've never hear of a panther going full speed in reverse over hilly terrain and getting 3KOs at 600m. See my point?

  5. Ok I have got a few extreme examples of stuff that regularly happens to me in games. Panther 20m away from a firefly shoots and misses.....twice. That is not possible period. Luckly the conscript firefly did nothing and the 3rd shot was a hit. This type of thing happens a lot to me, first shot missed at 80meters and under the gunner would have to purposefully aim the gun at the ground or in the sky to miss.

  6. I was playing a QB a couple days ago when I drove my tiger into a little forrested area, not surprisingly there was 2 platoons worth of infantry there and 3bazookas about 10meters away:D. At my next I had one hummel area target next to the tiger and the other fire at the infantry on it is own. Close in HE to kill infantry works well I just hardly ever get in a situation to use it as they ussually use their rifle grenades and kill the tank before I can support it with other tanks…which is why I use infantry less carelessly against humans tongue.gif

  7. while I do agree that stationary tanks should have more of an advantage when ambushing I also would like to point out that in the 2 games I played today only one of my tanks missed on the first shot…then again I always buy vetran TDs smile.gif I think CM models accuracy fairly well except that the chances/percent system CM uses is too linear…(I'll try to explain this when I wake up tomorrow lol).

  8. this has been getting on my nerves a lot lately. I know an enemy tank is around the corner, the enemy tank knows I'm waiting out there rotated toward the building and him in a hull down posistion. He moves forward from behind the building, targets me rotates his turret fires kills me before I get a shot off. At ranges where I can't use an ambush point this happens all the time. I feel like my tank commander is looking everywhere for enemies and oblivious to the threat we know is behind the building, but the enemy is fully aware of my posistion and totally prepared. shouldn't I have the advantage not him?

what tricks can I use to stop this in CMBO and how will this change in CMBB?

  9. well lets think about this, would any human tank command just sit there and start shooting infantry while theres obviously a tank somewhere in that vicinity looking to nail him from the rear? No.

What would be nice is if your tanks would hold on to the target the same as they do now with the same length of time. But if they didn't pop out, reverse into cover(maybe drop smoke like when a pvIV is going against a churchill). and then target other units. Just an idea to at least simulate actions a tank might take in that situation.
