1. Just to clarify the "Armoured/Tank" designation of Commonwealth troops: Two main arms of service are Infantry and Armoured. Historically, most Armoured regiments are descended from Cavalry, hence the nomenclature 'regiment' for a battalion-sized unit, and the smaller formations called squadrons, troops and patrols. Incidentally, a private from a Cavalry unit is the only soldier properly called 'Trooper.' Infantry units that are equipped with tanks are referred to as 'Tank,' because they're not part of the Armoured Corps. Conversely, armoured units may have a substantial infantry component. My knowledge of WWII military history isn't great, so correct me if I'm wrong.
 2. Thanks for the responses so far. My ATI Rage Pro card is a boxed add-on, topped up to 8MB RAM, not the built-in video which maxes out at 6MB. I wouldn't doubt that this is the cause of the low-res textures; I've read that a 16MB 3d card is recommended. That's why I'd love to get my 3dfx card working with combat mission. It does wonders for Unreal Tournament and the Rune demo. The Voodoo 2 b5 drivers (the last version of 3dfx's 'Reference Drivers' produced) include the following extensions: 3dfx GlideLib2.x 3Dfx GlideLib3.x 3dfx OpenGL Renderer 3dfx Rave I'm sure that the drivers' capabilities differ from the PC version. I'm still looking for the definitive answer to the question 'Does Voodoo2/Mac work with Combat Mission?'
 3. Out of curiosity -- does anyone know what the general elevation/depression characteristics of German/UK/US/Soviet tanks were? Were hull-down tactics stressed as much as they are today? I just know about modern tanks. Soviet tanks from the 50s on have a very restricted gun depression (about 2 deg. or so) due to their very low turret roof and autoloader. Because of this they have to get right on top of a hill to fire down, losing the hull-down advantage. Built for company assaults, I guess.
 4. I've been messing around trying to get my Voodoo 2 card to to work with the CM demo, with no luck. My Rage pro card works okay at high resolution, but the textures render with much less detail than the screen shots I've seen. I can see the white star on the 'weathered sherman' texture is visible but looks fuzzy when I zoom in. System: Platinum G3/266 (rev 160MB ATI Xclaim 3d (Rage Pro) 8MB Diamond Monster 2 Voodoo2 16MB? Voodoo 2 b5 drivers 17" monitor (normally at 1024x768/millions) Questions: Should this work with Combat Mission? Should this work with the CM demo? Do you actually have a similar configuration working? Any tips on what to try to make mine work?

 6.
quote:
a HT driving like a mad man . . . and is it realistic for the crew of the HT to say "Sure, we will go die for you" and drive off in to certain death?

Sounds to me like armoured reconnaissance doing a normal day's work. If you want to make it realistic, move the HTs in pairs, leap-frog style. The one hidden in the rear is supposed to spot the gun or tank that takes out his buddy in front. He then maintains visual contact, waiting for arty or armour to do their job. Lather, rinse and repeat. ------------------ -- mzajac AT pangea.ca
 7. Lots of great movie suggestions; I'm going to have to find Die Brucke and The Train. I'd like to add Kenneth Branagh's Henry V to the list (although I guess we've gone beyond comparisons with Combat Mission).
