True, Tom Jentz has written THE REFERENCE WORK on the TIGER I/II family with his 3 volumes. Add the Spielberger book and you know all what is known about these tanks.

I strongly recommend to get everything which is published by Tom Jentz [of course if you can afford it]. All books are excellent references on german tanks and the "Panzertruppe" itself.

Some extracts of his comparision charts about Tiger I/II can be found here:

    http://www.leibstandarte.uni.cc/

Direct link to the charts is:

    http://redrival.com/leibstandarte/survive.htm

BTW: In his PANTHER volume Jentz provides the reader with the same love to detail information and demystified some misconceptions concerning the Panther II.

Extracts from his Panther book can be found here:

  3. Hmmm,

Methinks the problem here with CoolColJ using a Warez version on CM for a limited time does have some parallels.

Isn´t it, from the juristic point of view [not morally] the same as if I mailorder a Music CD and pay for it and at the same time borrow an identical Music CD from a friend or rent one from a CD-rental-shop for 24 hours to record it to tape and hear the music from tape until my paid CD arrives ?

So to my understanding the same copyright laws should apply here as they do, if I make a copy of a Videotape that I hired for 24 hours in a Video-rental-shop.

BTW: I have to pay for renting the Music-CD or the Video tape. Is the Owner of the shop breaking laws by giving his customers a copyrighted copy of a CD or Videotape although he knows that the customer can illegally copy the CD/tape for personal use and thus avoiding buying a legal copy at full prize ?

Wasn´t the introduction of DAT-Recorders back then initiating the same copyright discussions as the introduction of CD-Recorders did ?

I´m really interested to hear what our lawyers say to these points.

  4. Mike,

Without doubt it is. "Florian Geyer" has some record of committed atrocities while on security duties behind the lines in Russia against partisans. And also after front-line combat they were rested in Croatia and were again employed on anti-partisan duties in the Southern Balkans. And again they were implicated in numerous atrocities.

IIRC the only SS-Division without numerous atrocities was 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking. Even the Russians admitted this at the end of the war. But of course there is still the possibility that something ugly hasn´t come to light yet.

However, it definitively is true that the Waffen-SS had a...ermmm...somewhat distorted relation to the Hague Convention, to put it mildly. But it is also true that you can´t judge people by only their membership to a certain division. Many late war soldiers of Waffen-SS divisions weren´t voluntarily serving in the SS but were ordered there and came from the Navy or Luftwaffe.

So there´s no black and white.

  5. Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord

    v1.03 UPDATE PATCH - Windows

    July 26, 2000 www.battlefront.com

This is the version 1.03 update for "Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord".

It updates versions: 1.0 through 1.02. Please follow these instructions:

    1. Note the following files contained in this update:

    - Combat Mission.exe (application file v1.03)

    - "New BMP" directory, contains 1720.BMP through 1729.BMP

    (10 graphics files)

    - 00002080.WAV (sound file)

    2. Replace the old "Combat Mission.exe" application file with the new

    one.

(NOTE: If you already have v1.01 or later, you can skip steps 3 and 4).

    3. Move the CONTENTS of the "New BMP" directory into the "BMP"

directory. Make sure you move the ten files INSIDE "New BMP" into the

BMP directory - do not copy the "New BMP" directory itself.

    4. Move 00002080.WAV into the "WAV" directory. If you originally

did a "minimum" install and don't see a "WAV" directory, then just

    create one.

You're all done! Below is the list of changes made.

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

    v1.03 7/26/2000

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

    * Play-by-email format has changed. Both players must use v1.03

    to be compatible.

    * Infantry moving in the open is more vulnerable to casualties than

    before.

    * Small-arms units, especially MGs, fire more rapidly at units that

    are moving in the open.

    * Top-mount MG range increased for: Stuart, T8, PSW 234/3

    * Vickers MG is available to British and Polish paratroops.

    * Running units spot enemies more poorly.

    * Mortar shell top armor penetration capability reduced slightly.

    * The 'front line' in Operations does not tend to shift quite as

much in the attacker's favor as it did before.

    * v1.01 made pillboxes just a little bit too resistant to artillery.

This resistance has been toned down slightly.

    * Fog of War 'preference' is remembered properly.

    * Unit point values have been tweaked, especially small recoilless

weapons. Vehicles with veteran or better experience also cost more.

    * Quick Battles

    - Max length is now 60 turns.

    - Troop quality, weather, and time of day can be set to "random".

    - The automatic force chooser can now pick Conscript (on Low

quality setting), and Crack and Elite troops (on High quality

    setting).

    - Allow a slightly higher portion of points to be spent on artillery.

    - In a 2-player Quick Battle, a reminder window appears to both

players if there is a handicap in force size.

    - Attacker-to-defender ratio in points is slightly reduced.

    * TacAI (esp. for tanks) is less 'distracted' by targets of lesser

    importance.

    * Vehicle reinforcements are more likely to be placed on a road, if one is

    (very) nearby.

    * Operations have always been able to end when one side is "pushed off"

their own map edge, but the algorithm which determines when this has

occurred is more forgiving now, and allows the force to be "squeezed" up

closer against that map edge before force-ending the operation.

    * Sound volume no longer automatically raised to maximum when CM starts

    up.

    * FOs are no longer automatically fully resupplied between battles in an

    operation.

    * Foxholes dug in Tall Pines terrain were treated (in part) as if they

were dug in the open. This is now fixed.

    * Vehicles that button up or turn away are less likely to lose visual

    contact with their *current* target.

    * One can no longer change a rotation waypoint to a movement waypoint,

    therefore circumventing command delay.

    * Computer player is smarter about exiting units for points (when allowed

    by scenario).

    * Grenade and demo charge attacks against armored vehicles can no longer

cause collateral damage to friendly units.

    * Random map generator no longer creates "spiky" hills.

    * Silhouette rating for M24 Chaffee reduced.

    * Bailed crews now have poor visual spotting ability.

    * When a sound contact to an enemy vehicle is lost, the sound effect of

    its engine stops too.

    * Units out of ammo will never be shown as 'reloading'.

    * Pillbox MG ammo no longer 'wraps around' back up to 254 or 255 shots.

    * Reinforcements in an operation are no longer sometimes placed in

    impassable terrain.

    * Turret penetrations are likely to cause more crew casualties than

    before.

    * Time penalty for adjusted artillery missions is slightly reduced.

    * Captured troops don't stay panicked for unreasonable lengths of time.

    * A bug which sometimes caused a unit which had just suffered a casualty,

but had not fired, to say "reloading", has been fixed.

    * Split squads kept split at the end of a battle during an operation no

longer have problems remembering the number of casualties suffered.

    * Sometimes in the scenario editor, squads split into teams would be

given different squad I.D. numbers. This has been fixed.

    * Deleting a split-squad team in the editor simultaneously deletes the

other team as well. Also, the point values for split-squad teams are

corrected, and correct data is shown for them in the cursor-hotspot info

    window.

    * Sneaking is now more sensitive to incoming fire when it decides to stop

    (i.e. "advance to contact")

    * Occasionally during an Operation, a vehicle knocked out in a previous

battle, when hit again, could produce a 'new' crew bailing out. This is

    fixed.

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

    v1.02 6/21/2000

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

    * Quick Battles can have larger forces.

    * Unarmored vehicles and those with rear-facing guns are smarter about

when to rotate the whole vehicle (TacAI).

    * Woods terrain doesn't "break" over elevation changes.

    * UNSPOTTED infantry won't ever fire panzerfausts at enemy infantry.

    * Heavy buildings are slightly less likely to catch fire. And firing

bazookas and panzerschrecks from inside any type of building is slightly

less likely to cause a fire than previously (from backblast).

    * Previously, if you canceled out of the password screen and started up

a new 1-player game, CM would crash. This is fixed.

    * A sharpshooter's data screen lists main weapon as "sniper rifle" (was

    previously blank).

    * Several small bugs fixed in how aerial rockets damage armored vehicles.

    * U.S. Paratrooper battalion has 9 bazookas in its HQ Company, not 8.

  6. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>So, if they hold the copyright, I don't see how Hitler's relatives could get any royalties from the book. Well, I guess you can always try...<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Well I don´t know the exact regulations for the USA and the UK but contrary to some peoples common belief Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf may be out of copyright the contrary is the case. There has been some discussion in spring of this year because a czech publisher printed a translated issue of MK.

    http://www.ce-review.org/00/12/culik12.html

In several cases the German authorities have pointed out that the state of Bavaria holds the copyright for Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf for all countries of the world except the United Kingdom and the United States and it has recently used these rights to prevent publication of the work in several countries. Bavaria has managed to prevent the publication of Mein Kampf in Sweden, in Croatia and in Turkey. In some cases, according to information from the Bavarian Finance Ministry, the Bavarian authorities have forced the publisher to pulp the printed book.

Even in the Czech case, said the spokesperson of the Bavarian Finance Ministry, Bavaria would do its utmost to prevent the dissemination of Mein Kampf in Czech.

  7. One addition to Panzermeyer might be helpfull for everyone interested in his personality and his involvement in the atrocities being committed while he was commander of SS-Panzergrenadierregiment 25 and the Division itself after 16th June 44.

First read his own highly distorted view of his wartime-reality he gives in his book "Grenadiere" which was written by himself and published 1957. AFAIK translated into english and published via Fedorowicz.

Second, I highly recommend to read the book of his son, Kurt Meyer, Title "Geweint wird wenn der Kopf ab ist", published 1998 via HERDER/SPEKTRUM and afaik not translated into english. In this book "Panzermeyer´s" son gives a pretty clear description of his fathers character, his own relationship to his father "Panzermeyer" and his fathers HIAG relationships.

Third, on the topic of atrocities there has been published an IMO excellent book about especially the 12th SS HJ and what Meyer, Milius, Bremer and Mohnke were responsible for. The book is written by Howard Margolian, its title is "Conduct Unbecomming", published 1998 via University of Toronto press.

It all in all is a very "Hot" and "sensitive point" with many biased publications on both sides of the fence. It really isn´t sufficient to only read one book to get the whole picture, you need more than that to filter out the truth, what is fact and what is myth.

BTW: If you can get them, look for the stuff MacDonald "The trial of Kurt Meyer" 1954 and Tony Foster have published. It really adds to the picture.

As I have said, it´s a really sensible field with much misconception but one fact remains: The Murdered that can´t be brought back to life.

    Just a thought:

If you have unzipped the *.BMP files to your /CMBO/BMP folder and you still can´t see the NAZI-Runes in the game, I am highly likely to assume that you start the game with a shortcut to the combatmission *.EXE on your CD-Rom drive ? Of course I can be wrong, but....check your combat mission shortcut anyways.

    Jagdpanzer IV (early) = One 75mm L/48 PaK 39 (79 rounds); One 7.92mm MG42

    Jagdpanzer IV (late) = One 75mm L/48 PaK 39 (79 rounds), One 7.92mm MG42

    Panzer IV/70 (V) = One 75mm L/70 PaK42 (55 rounds), One 7.92mm MG42

    Panzer IV/70 (A) = One 75mm L/70 PaK42, One 7.92mm MG42

    Literature:

Spielberger: "Der Panzerkampfwagen IV und seine Abarten"

    Spielberger: "Leichte Jagdpanzer"

Chamberlain and Doyle: "Encyclopedia of German Tanks of WWII "

Fleischer & Eiermann: "Die Deutsche Panzerjägertruppe 1935-1945"

Might be the lack of the ballmount lead to the decision not to model the MG on the JgPzIV L/70 (V). The MG had to be fired through the opening with the conical cap on the tanks right front, which usually was closed. Or alternatively it was fired using a bipod from the roof of the tank. Of course only if the tank wasn´t buttoned.

  12. Yeah,

but only the Jagdpanzer IV L/70 had it. Actually there were 2 versions, the Vomag and the Alkett version. The Vomag is modelled in the game (some 930 produced from 8/44-3/45).

It suffered heavily from being nose heavy which resulted in frequent failures of the rubber tyred wheels, hence later models were fitted steel rimmed wheels at the first 2 stations.

The "normal" Jagdpanzer IV had the L/48 gun (some 770 produced from 1/44-11/44).

    From above website:

Mark C. Yerger is a noted historian and researcher on the Waffen SS. He has accumulated over 4,000 photos, several hundred thousand document copies, 400 SS texts and several hundred periodicals including all "Der Freiwillige." Mr. Yerger has had regular contact with or met over 150 commanders and Knight's Cross holders and has perhaps the largest holding of material related to 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich". Needless to say he is one of the premier historians of the Waffen-SS. I will provide a list of Mr. Yerger's books as well as the autographed prints of Waffen SS Knights Cross holders that he has for sale or trade.

The first of a 5-volume set, this volume covers the 2. SS-Panzer-Division "Das Reich" from its formation in 1934 to the conclusion of the Polish Campaign in 1939. A lot of detail on the formation of the SS.

Das Reich II ISBN 0-921991-24-X. $40.00(US) / $56.00 (CDN). Hard cover, 9"x6", 400 pages, 108 photographs 20 maps, charts and tables.

This volume covers actions in Holland, France, Yugoslavia and Russia (until August 1941) in great detail. An excellent fighting record of this elite Waffen SS unit.

  17. Well,

Having fired a few thousand rounds with the MG-3 both from my Leopard II, dismounted from Bipod or Tripod I can assure you that the sound in CM is absolutely realistic.

The difference between the MG-42 and the MG-3 is basically twofold. They changed the caliber to NATO standard 7,62*51 and they changed the ROF. The reduction of ROF might have a slight minor influence on the weapon sound, but most certainly this is neglectable. (of course IMO, because I haven´t heard the original MG42 firing a few hundreds of 7,92 ammo)

However the charakteristic "Brrrrrrtttt, Brrrrrrrrt" is there, that´s what counts for me.

The training manual - Heeresdienstvorschrift 298/3a concerning command and control and combat operations for Panzergrenadiere "Fuehrung und Kampf der Panzergrenadiere" - hits the nail on the head:

Mechanized Panzergrenadiere are the armored assault troops (Sturmtruppen) of the Panzerdivision. Their unique, rapidly maneuvering operations form the prerequisite for operational commitment. Togetber with tanks they form a close combat team. They carry out independent assignments in bold, rapid action.

A high level of maneuverability, all-terrain capability, armored protection, highfirepower and an abundant outfitting of the means of command and control enable them to master difficult situations rapidly and succesfully.

Mechanized Panzerarenadier formations fight from Schuetzenpanzerwagen. Enemy action and terrain can temporarily force them to a rapid cbange from mounted combat to fighting on foot. Even during dismounted operations, the heavy weapons mounted on the Schuetzenpanzerwagen (antitankguns and mortars) in mobile commitment give them a unique capability.

Combat elan and boldness, united with lightning-fast power of decision and great maneuverability, characterize the Panzergrenadier.
