  1. I've been using 64 bit Vista for about 3 months now. I haven't had even one problem yet that I can blame on Vista (I have an issue running CM, but that is due to screwed up drivers from my video card manufacturer). So far it has been flawless. I installed it on a new machine I put together with all new components, so driver issues weren't a problem. If I was going to install an OS on an old machine I'd still use XP; but, for new machines Vista seems like the smart way to go.

  2. I would stay away from tape. What about just using hard drives? Mirror a couple of large hard drives. I know you said your aren't that worried about speed, but I'm not sure you appreciate just how slow tape is. Hard drives are HUNDREDS of times faster than tape. Tapes wear out too. You'll have to replace them every couple of years if you want the reliability to be there. To top it off, hard drives are cheaper.

I use a tape backup solution every day at my job. We are definitely looking at converting over to a backup server using hard drives in the near future.

  3. Roger Ebert, someone who has seen a few movies both good and bad, has given the film three stars and a wonderful review on his site.

Ebert is the guy who gave "Die Hard" 2 stars and "Speed 2: Cruise Control" 3 stars (out of 4). Movie fans on IMDB gave "Die Hard" 8.2 out of 10 and "Speed 2" 3.3 out of ten. I tend to believe the general public over so called "experts" when it comes to reviews.

    Here's a review from IMDB:

    Wow.. where do I start?

In the opening credits you knew something was going to go wrong when you saw "40 Acres and a Mule Production"..

This will be the worst 2 hours and 40+ Minutes of your life.

The bad parts of this movie?

The Screen Play, The Directing, The Acting and the way they dumb down the film.. oh and at most of the times during the film the soundtrack was really bad and inappropriate..

The soldiers you could tell have had very little training to play as soldiers. At one point in the movie where they pick up a stretcher it looks like they are AFRAID to even be on film..

There is a part where two of the lead actors in the film are arguing in the courtyard, the acting is so bad and seem's so forced you almost want to get up and leave the theater.

This might be the only movie where I wish I didn't have to review and blog about it so I could have left the theater.

    Yea its that bad.

If you see positive ratings on this movie and reviews from other people about it tell you how great it is.. YOU ARE BEING SCAMMED..

Avoid this movie at all costs. It's not even worth a download..

It isn't worth having on for free on HBO on some Saturday when its poring rain outside.

Nice work spike, you lost your touch.. Thanks for wasting our time and the movie industries money. I am sure you don't care you got yours $$$.

  4. I usually slice up a few potatoes into small cubes and throw them into a frying pan. After cooking them for a short time I chop up an onion and a can of spam. I throw that in with the potatoes. I cook this mix until the potatoes are done, salt and pepper to taste, and serve it up. My daughter loves this stuff.

When I was a little kid I spent a lot of time living aboard a sailboat with my family travelling the great lakes. It was a small boat and didn’t have much in the way of food storage, especially refrigerated storage. Because of this, Spam was a convenient food. The way my mom prepared it was as I discussed above. She called it “Spam Slam.”

  5. Many SpecOps units, ISTR, simply don't take new recruits. The only way to even be considered is to be a veteran soldier/sailor/Marine with a terrific record and be specially selected for a shot at getting into SpecOps. Check the selection criteria for the unit of interest, but I'm pretty sure you'll find this to be common. I know neither the Green Berets nor the Rangers take new recruits; far from it. This is definitely the case with Delta Force, and I'm pretty sure that's true of the SEALS, Force Recon and the PJs.

I don't know how the other branches handle it, but that is definitely not the case for Navy SEALS. Back when I joined (late 80's) you could volunteer in bootcamp. Now-a-days you can apply to be a SEAL before you even go to bootcamp!

  6. Also, the more I think on it, the more I wish that the cell stage had influenced more of the actual game. That is to say the creature designs and such. In the cell stage if you place 10 flippers on your creature, you'll propel yourself along at a much faster speed than a creature with one flipper. Yet in the later stages they abandoned the location based effects for the parts, and the quantity. In the creature phase you end up abandoning most of the creature aesthetics and design choices in favour of an RPG like play element so that you can 'max' out a stat to remain competitive, sometimes anyway.

I agree with all of that. I too found those things disappointing.

There is certainly some room for improvement in this game. Overall I enjoy it though. The cool thing is that it's a game that appeals to both me and my 9 year old daughter. I can't think of any other games I can say that about.

  7. At first I thought the space stage might be frustrating, but once I got the hang of it I liked it. I think the problem some people are having with it is that they are playing "turtle" too much. If you are content with just staying on your homeworld and moon I can see why you would be very frustrated. You have to explorre out a little bit and either defeat or become friends with your neighbors. That should take care of most of your problems of constantly being under attack.

  8. I still hear X-COM sound effects popping up in other games and movies from time to time (presumably taken from the same standard sound effect library).

I do too. I remember watching the movie "Wag the Dog" and recognizing the civilian female scream from X-Com. I still remember that scream like I heard it yesterday. I still hear it once in a while on TV too.

  9. Yes, we have friends down there that may be in for a rough time.

It looks like Hanna won't be that bad, and it will miss my neck of the woods (South Florida) completely. However, Ike is looking down right scary right now. It seems like it was recently just a minor storm and suddenly now it's a Cat 4 monster!

  10. Black holes don't destroy the universe. They are all over the universe now. The middle of our galaxy probably has a huge black hole located there. Think of a black hole as being a large star that takes up very little space. A large star doesn't automatically suck in everything around it; most things nearby (planets, comets, asteroids) are orbiting around it. The same is true of a black hole. When a large star collapses and forms a black hole it doesn't gain any more gravitational pull then when it was a still a star.
